That sounds quite interesting Virenji. I guess this would bring the midrange closer to the magic of your single driver speakers?

Well, the horns continue to grow!

Have been listening to the bigger 450 Hz (versus the smaller 600 Hz) wood LeCleach horn on the refurbished Altec 288 compression driver. In size, the larger horn's mouth is 16" across compared to 12.5" for the smaller one. The Altec driver courtesy of forum member Rajiv.

As they say, there's no going back! The larger driver and horn give a greater sense of flow to music. The tonal structure of music is enriched, and seems more real. Dynamics are enhanced. The music just becomes easier to listen into, as if a shaded layer has been removed.

I would say the horns have moved to a richer musical experience!

Viren

Hi,

You know when things just fall into place, things seem right, music listening is more real - that's indicative of overall improvement in the system. It's difficult to put these into words, but, once you hear it, you react to it immediately.

So, you are most welcome to hear for yourselves.

Viren

Hi,

Viren, looking forward to some pictures of the horns with the Altec 288's.

Now that both the the Altec 288's are up and running on the big horns FM's should go over to Viren's home and listen to them.

Rajiv

The large horns in their listening glory! If I may say so, they are sounding marvelous!

Manav, ranjeetrain - since you are in a quest of your own, how about coming over for a listen to my implementation of it. Would really like to have your comments.

Viren

Hi Viren,

The horns are looking beautiful! I see you are running them on GM70 mono blocs, that should be too much for the HF. By how much are you attenuating the HF? What LFs are you using? The same eminence?

Waiting to hear a detailed review from you on the altec sound. Also waiting to hear from you for a pair of the 600Hz horns for me. :D

Raj.

Viren uses the JBL D130 woofers.

Ahh, the almost full rangers, because it does only 30 - 15k Hz and not 20-20k Hz. Has an aluminium diaphragm for a dust cap for HF extension.

They have a very lovely sound, A guitarist I know has one on his guitar speaker, run from a tube amp.

But they are rated only 20W and should be of lower sensitivity than the Altec 416 right? Meaning they will require substantially higher power than the 288s.

Oh, our 10k experiment will work beautifully here wouldn't it? this goes upto 17kHz

Raj.

Hi rajagopal,

Yes, its the JBL D130 doing low frequency service. In the bass horn, it does have a high cutoff frequency, but the midbass reproduction is exemplary.

The GM70 mono amps drive the speakers through a passive crossover. The crossover is a very simple first order, but seems to work extremely well with the horns. Probably a fair amount of energy going to the upper horn (the Altec 288C), but in a home environment, we're putting only about 10 watts max. into the speakers. Also, the Altec 288s are padded down about 15 dB.

To me, the speakers sound very alive. But I'll leave detailed comments to others. And, I'll get back to you on the LeCleach horns very soon.

Regards,
Viren

Thanks for sharing the link Rajiv. Quite interesting to read, especially this part of the letter Mr. James Bullough Lansing wrote to Arnold Engineering putting in a request for a more powerful but lighter magnet.

Now about what goes on + business has bee deader than the proverbial skunk, but should be picking up shortly (I hope) because for teh first time we will be able to show a complete line of quality speakers, including a two-way job and a really efficient 12 incher that will play up even with the highest priced 15 inch jobs that are in the market at the present time.

The highlighted part sounds prophetic and gives an interesting insight into where the market was heading at that time. I'm not saying he was responsible for the shift but might be the one leading the pack.

Hi,

My new Lyrita made 400 Hz Le Cleach wood horns arrived yesterday. They are just beautiful to look at. Superb craftsmanship. :clapping: Initial listening impressions are very positive.

Thanks Viren for these beautiful horns.

Rajiv
