Onkyo HT s3400 Owner's thread

Hi Guys,

This is my first post to the forum though I have been following this thread for quite some time now.

Got my Onkyo HT-s3400 from Sharaf DG, Dubai a couple of days back for AED 999 (~INR 14500/-), tried looking for Onkyo 3500 there, but it seems they didn't have it with them as yet. Also got 30m Jamo 1.5mm speaker cables, hope they should suffice for the installation.

Need some help from experts on the installation of my 3400:

1. Can this be done ourselves or I should ask authorized Onkyo showroom guys for the installation.
2. What would be the approx service charges for that.
3. Is there any external service provider available in Bangalore who has experience in Onkyo installations.
4. This is not covered under warranty in India, has anyone who got their 3400 from Dubai had any issues with service in India.

Now some info on getting electronics from Dubai:

1. Prices are very cheap for LCD/LED TV's and HTiB's etc
(the Onkyo 5400 is available for AED 1899, I had got my Samsung D550 40" LCD from Dubai last year for arnd INR 30k)
2. Weight of the package after film wrapping at the airport was 22 kgs.
3. Emirates has a free allowance for 30 kgs in Economy and 40 Kgs in Business class.
3. Customs allows INR 35K as free allowance for each passenger (only if your stay abroad is for more than 3 days, if upto 3 days the allowance is INR 15K)

Thanks for your inputs in advance.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum Genx and congrats on the new acquisition. We are on the same boat that i am waiting for the 3400 which my friend bought for me from dubai (Sharaf DG). I will get the compete system by end of may only though. Onkyo doesn't provide international warranty. You can get the service at an extra cost. Only setting up the receiver and speaker is not that difficult task i guess coz my friend set it up in dubai to check for any complaints. One of our forum member from chennai inquired about installation at onkyo and they quoted 3K for that(check 2-3 pages back). Might be same here. I will need your help when i get mine :)

Hi,

Called up the Onkyo Branch office in Bangalore, they quoted INR 600 for the installation, but when they found out it was bought outside India they said the charges will be higher and they'll get back to me on Monday.

Couldn't wait for them so I setup the system myself yesterday with help from the previous posts on this thread (thanks to you all), currently using the stock speaker wires in the package. Will get some professional to setup the speakers using the Jamo speaker cables and calibrate the fine settings of the Onkyo 3400 AVR sometime later.

The connections so far are as follows:

Airtel HD STB --> Onkyo 3400 AVR (CBL/SAT HDMI IN)
AVR HDMI OUT --> TV (HDMI/DIV IN)

Connections planned:

Phillips DVD - Coaxial OUT --> AVR Coaxial IN
TV - Digital Optical OUT --> AVR Digital Optical IN (TV/CD) (This is for playing movies/music from the TV USB port)

Don't have the coaxial and Optical cable with me, need to get them today.

Also need to get a good BD player to fully optimize the AVR, but that's for my next trip to DXB

Can anyone please suggest where can I get the cables in Bangalore (preferably somewhere near Koramangala)

Have turned on Audyssey and using PL II Music listening mode for the CBL/SAT connection and getting only 2.0 channel PCM audio even for HD channels like Star World/Star Movies etc, however I get audio in all speakers through the simulated 5.1 mix created by the AVR from the 2 channel audio of the STB. The music channels are a disappointment and none seem to give any decent output except Sony Mix. Still waiting to hear some thump from the Subwoofer :)

Will I get 5.1 channel audio from the Airtel HD STB if I use a Coaxial cable to the AVR. Any suggestions to further tune the audio ?

Cheers

Airtel HD gives 5.1 audio only through optical out.

Till then you can also have your connection as below

HD STB >> HDMI >> TV
HD STB >> Optical >> AVR

This way you don't need to switch on the AVR if you need normal TV viewing

Thanks thirurajesh, Yesterday I tried with the same approach as suggested.

Airtel HD STB - HDMI ---> TV -HDMI
Airtel HD STB - Coaxial (SPDIF OUT) ---> AVR Coaxial IN
AVR - HDMI OUT --> TV HDMI IN

Edit:
Its working now after reassigning the Digital In for Coaxial from BD/DVD to CBL/SAT, now I am getting the red Dolby symbol on the AVR when I switch to HD channels on the Airtel HD STB :)

Also added a Digital Optical cable (TOSLINK) from the TV to the AVR, I was able to get "All Channel Stereo" in the TV/CD mode, but as expected no 5.1 since my Samsung LCD D550 does not give out 5.1 from the Digital Optical out.

So it looks like I am okay for now till I get myself a BD player.

Thanks to Hifivision for the knowledge and finer points of the setup.

Is there no additional duty charged when you get this from Dubai?

No duty needs to be paid in Dubai, since you have bought it from there, only thing you need to worry is the weight allowance form your airline. In India as it was within the free allowance (INR 35K) no customs duty was paid.

Cheers

No warranty in india though. We are getting it half price so no one bothers about warranty :)

A big thanks to Dineshshank for directing me to Sharaf. Also you can guide us when you progress in your installation. Genx i have not yet seen 3400. I believe you are staying some where in koramangala. Shall we meet on this weekend to have a demo?

Thanks Dineshshank. First time installation is an issue, but after spending two days on the installation and wonderful tips from fellow forum members across various threads it now seems worth the effort (have edited my previous post). The physical mounting of the speakers and the optimum layout would be my next step but that would be simple comparatively.

Though I have not done the complete setup till now, it will be a journey of discovery with each new setup and I am so looking forward to it :)

Can anyone here know any Onkyo service technician personally and can guide me to him, so that I need not go via the Onkyo dealers to complete my setup.

Hi

I just had my 3400 callibrated and to my surprise the callibration method was completely unique, and nothing that i could have done reading so much on the net

anyways i have a 11foot width X 17 length room

the settings are as follows

SP distance:
Front
L 16
R 16
C 20

Surround
L 14
R 14

subwoofer 13
(note all my front speakers are in the same line)

Speaker levels

L & R +4db
Centre +8db
surrond +6DB

(please remeber that while doing this setting ensure that your dynamic eq and dynamic volume are of and the master volume is at normal level that u tend to listen to movies.)

once you have done these settings play a good action sequence ( irecommend CARS or Dark knight or Godzilla) to check out the effects remember the effects of surrounds bass are as important as the dialogues. so play a sequence that has actions but dialogues as well and see if you can hear the dialogues perfectly with all the action effects around.

Hope this helps.

Recently bought the Onkyo 3400 for 25k. Absolute value for money. One thing i have noticed is that the sub is more effective when the receiver is not getting a DTS signal like when watching AXN, rather than when its getting a signal while watching Star World HD or Star Movies HD.

that is surprising . what mode do you listen to when you are on non hd channel is it prologic, TD, or sterio. that could have a bearing on how sterio sound is distributed.

Congratulations dinkynarula :clapping:

Please validate the mode for non DTS channels and also if you are referring to Tata Sky DD 5.1 output, well the glitch lies in how TS distributes sound across 5.1 for their advertised DD5.1 channels. They seem to be re-engineering sound at their end.

Got my 3400 calibrations done a couple of days back. The performance has improved by 100% compared to the basic settings done by me after setting up the connections.

Now the sound is richer and has more depth, enjoyed a couple of DVD's with 5.1 channel output and the experience has been just awesome :)

Cheers
