onkyo hts 3300

Now I am thinking of buying a good blu ray player to complete my home theater. But the pathetic state of blu rental services in india, the high prices of BD titles(and the players) stop me from doing so.

So its been a while since I got my 3300 and I am loving every bit of it!!!
I have seen Expendables, Toy Story, Inception, The Dark Knight, How To train Your Dragon so far on my system and all of these looked(and sounded) great!!
But I have one quibble. All of these movies were blu-ray rips(mkv) but I only got a pcm feed in my avr. No dolby digital 5.1. Only DTS. Has anyone out here tried BD rips and got DD 5.1 or a superior audio feed on their systems?

Did you select "Use S/PDIF when available" under Properties->Audio in VLC?

That option is for audio passthrough. If you don't select it, VLC will process the audio.
I turned on this option but still only PCM feed. I don't know how I am going to get this to work. I have so many good BD rips and all i am getting is PCM feed. Somebody who has been able to get DD 5.1 using mkv rips plz help

Hello Waveking
What is the OS on your Laptop?
I guess you can go to the hdmi properities and select 5.1
You will not see DD on the receiver but you will see multi in

This is how it used to show on my friend's AVR
He was using Denon 1600 and had an HTPC and was using Windows Media player to play the rips with AAC (6 channel) audio

did you try with full 720p/1080p videos with 5.1 sound?

i mean most of the rips dont have 5.1 audio

dont try bdrips..try the non compressed versions and also what media player do you use?
does it support dd 5.1?

I tried several 1080p BD rips and am pretty sure that they contain 5.1 tracks coz of their large size(many are around 14 gigs). I tried vlc, gom, media player classic homecinema but no luck whatsoever. I tried searching for this issue on the net and i guess i am not the only one facing this problem. I think it has something to do with audio not being passed through the laptop to avr unhindered. The media players are tinkering with the audio in some way and so it is not being passed to the avr as it is. Have to resolve this problem.

Got my Onkyo 3300 today. Installed but yet to use it for more than the initial 30 mins.

Waveking my std dvd rips with 5.1 and BD rips (had only couple of them) show the red D sign and I was able to experience good surround effects using WDTV Live player connected to this set.

I guess it works because you are using a media player. Its a shame I am still not abl to get that holy DD sign with my BD rips. It comes only with natgeo HD and Discovery HD. But those are pretty bland channels. I wanted to experience true DD 5.1 with some awesome action movie. Have you tried playing those BD rips with your laptop? If u do and that DD symbol glows plz pm me :o

If you have selected "Use S/PDIF when available" in VLC, then the only place you might have messed is the Audio Control panel of your OS.
Post a screenshot of the control panel where you select options for HDMI.

Post the following screenshots:
1. When you select Digital Output Device (HDMI) and then Properties

You don't need AC3filter. You can uninstall it. It will make things simpler.
