onkyo hts 3300

My bad. What I wanted to say is if the AVR HDMI has audio pass through or not? If yes, you will need separate digital outputs in your laptop.

For non HD audio its identical.

For HD audio the only option is HDMI. So no comparison in this case.

I am seriously considering onkyo-3300 for my bedroom. It is about 15ft by 12 ft. Is it feasible to setup a 5.1 system in a room of this size? And does this onkyo-3300 have hdmi audio pass through? If some u guys can provide a brief review or something then it will make my day.

waveking there are plenty of reviews of 3300 in this forum...i dont think you will even be able to see the bass of 3300 in a room of the size that you have in mind...but nonetheless....3300 has a good sound but your paycheck will be reduced by 24k atleast :) it does allow audio through HDMI

Is my room too big for this onkyo htib?? What should be the ideal size of a room for the optimal experience?

hello guys!! From the past few days I was thinking of buying a home theatre. Initially, I had planned to go for sony or phillips home theatre. I thought they were the best (as i dont know much about home theatres), but then somehow I landed up in this forum and after reading some rave reviews of Onkyo hts3300, I straightaway went to a dealer in Gurgaon to take the audition. And when he played some clips from few hollywood movie and the song-Desi girl, I went crazy. That sound was better than those of the multiplexes.I had no intentions of going for home theatre that costs 25k, but I booked it soon after the demo. Now waiting for the little monster to come and get installed in my home!! very excited!!

Hey waveking,
1st of all I personally feel that the sub will rock your room easily, just try listening to it in different feasible areas before fixing its location ( close to a wall or corner maybe)
2nd The receiver is a repeater i.e, It can pass both audio and video via HDMI. Only receivers with audio pass through HDMI can have True HD and DTS MA.
Listen up no point speding huge bucks unless you have a dedicated home theater room, the 3300 is a great choice to start with. CHEERS!

Btw have u also bought this system, If yes the plz share your experience with it.

i got HTS 3300 from modern world bangalore 6 months back for 24K

its good, and is future proof due to HDMI 1.4 support.
no need to change the amp, when u upgrade to 3D tv and bluray in future.

you will be needing hdmi 1.3 cable to enjoy DTS HD and Dolby True HD

i will definitely recommend it.

One thing i notice is that i don't find great difference for my ears between normal audio and HD audio. may be audiophiles can find it.
or may be a better speakers will give u the difference.

Bought the onkyo 3300 today. Price--23.5k (including complete installation, wall mounting etc). I got it at onkyo wonderland, CR park, New delhi. I first auditioned rhe system there and it sounded good to my ears. But when I tried to connect my dell studio 15 via hdmi to the system i couldn't get any audio from the system. They tried various hdmi wires and even pulled out a complete new avr piece for this but no luck!!! The audio just didn't come. But when the sales guy hooked my laptop to the onkyo-5300 audio came instantly. They were stumped(including me!!) They had no idea why was this happening!!
Anyways I bought the system and quickly connected it on my own(just the front and center speakers) to get a 3.1 config and connected my TS HD to it. The results are pretty good. But I am yet to test my laptop with it and I don't have a dvd/bd player as of now. So I guess I will spend today(and the night) tinkering with the various settings and trying to get my laptop work on it. Will post a brief noob review as soon as I get it completely installed(the installation guys will come on wednesday)

Update: I again tried hooking up my laptop via hdmi to the avr but still no luck!! The avr doesent even recognize it!!! And my hdmi wires are working fine with other setups. I dont know whats the problem!! Somebody plz help!!

Update 2.0 : Finally managed to get my laptop working with the system. I watched some imax clips of Dark Knight(14 gigs) and Inception (39gigs) on it and OMG!!! Pure AWESOMENESS!! I can't believe I was missing this the whole time. And this is without the rear speakers attached in. I now recommend this system to everyone out there looking for a great(and cheap) HT. Now I ain't an audiophile but I do watch movies a lot and believe if it sounds good to me then there is an 9.5/10 chance that it wil to u too ( i deducted the .5 for those acute discerning audiophiles out there :D)

I am planning to buy Onkyo 3300 from the US. It costs 294$ at present which is 13.2k.

Can i bring it in the suit case by packing it ?
Is there any risks involved in it ?
Any suggestion to bring from the US ?

Other Items

Hello Double Seven,

Well it may not be a smart move to get 3300 from abroad, if the weight is too much then you are paying excess baggage and possibilities to escape customs duty drops being a bulky item.

I think you should consider some other electronic stuff of your interest which is not bulky and lesser weight, for example a projector, this way you will not have weight issues and brighter possibilities with the customs.

If you are personally going to bring it along with you, I don't think there would be any problem except that you need to carry that as a baggage with 25 kgs. You might not be able to bring in any other goodies and may have to cut down on the weight for other baggage as you would know there is restriction on baggage weight on airlines. There would not be any problem with the customs as you can say it is for personal use. It would be a very good bargain as you would only want to invest on a transformer here in India for change in voltage. You would however would not get the warranty on the product so it is better you check the product throughly before you bring it here.

Hi Guys
This question is kind of mixed one.
I have onkyo hts-3300 and WDTV live.
Right now i am connected via optical cable from WDTVlive >>>AVR
Then HDMI cable from WDTVlive>>>TV

Will it make any significant improvement if i connect WDTVlive via HDMI to AVR and the HDMI from AVR>>TV ?

I have read that WDTV live only streams 5.1 audio through Optical?
Will i be able to get 5.1 using HDMI?

And what is the concept of Audio Return Channel?

Any inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are asking about audio, they will be identical, provided WDTVlive doesn't support HD audio.

Yes, absolutely.

You normally pass audio signal from devices like AVR to TV through HDMI. If it was happen the other way around, meaning your TV can also send audio though HDMI to AVR, then you would require another cable to send this signal from TV to AVR.
Now if the TV & AVR is Audio Return Channel enabled then you can send audio signal from TV to AVR through the same HDMI cable that is used to send audio from AVR to TV.

Can somebody help me with this?
I ve recently booked an Onkyo 3300 (yet to be delievered). I have dell inspiron 1525(has an hdmi) with XP as the os. I frequently use my laptop to watch mkv format hd movies with dts (not dts-ma) on my lcd-tv(has hdmi port). I had installed the required hdmi driver and intel chipset and both work properly. I just have to go the intel graphics icon in the control panel and select the digital tv point to send the signals (both audio nd video)to the lcd using a cheap hdmi cable.
Now my confusion is, after setting up my home theatre how can I watch the same hd movies such that the reciever gets the dts signal? I mean what settings shud i do in my laptop? will i have to select the digital tv out to send the signal frm laptop to receiver and also do some settings in the software player (i use vlc and gom player)? I will be using 2 hdmi cables; one frm laptop to avr and other frm avr to lcd.

i think I PMed you regarding this. ( maybe the crappy hv pm system lost my message somewhere :D)
No settings are required. Just hook your laptop the usual way to the hdmi port of the avr and your avr via hdmi to your tv. My avr does show the red dts symbol when i play movies from vlc and gom player. Vlc does has some audio options like you can choose from 5.1, stereo, mono, etc. Just select your preferred setting from there.

I have got my hts 3300 last weekend. and just playing around with it a little bit now a day. a very simple setting that I have not been able to understand is about the BASS/TREBLE. I am trying to increase the BASS as suggested in the user manual, however in the AVR displays it shows the increment in the dB number, but there is no change in the output from the speakers/sub. Same observation for TREBLE setting. in a nutshell, I am not able to increase/decrease BASS/TREBLE for the system.

I have tried the same for MP3 CDs, DVDs, some MP3 being played through the USB port on my Sony BDP S370.

Any suggestions, if I am missing some other setting for the same.

Cheers

Bought the onkyo HTS 3300 from 5.1 Digital Park in Chennai for Rs.22,500/-. Shall update on the performance after installing it on Monday.

Bass & Treble settings in HT-S3300 affect only the front left & right speakers. Hence to notice the effect more prominently you can select Setero mode and listen to the changes. For Stereo mode press the white Stereo button in the remote.
Particularly for Treble you can try the above.

For Bass....since front L&R speakers (or for that matter all the speakers) though full range, are small, hence not meant for high bass. All the bass predominantly comes from the subwoofer.
So to increase the bass you can select Subwoofer and increase it. It can be done in two ways from the remote, either using the Audio-->Subwoofer or Setup-->Level Cal-->Subwoofer
