If you listen to folk and community oriented music, and have been following Pete Seeger's music most of your life, make sure you do not miss this CD. I don't remember if this album finally got the Grammy award this year or not, but it is an album you can't ignore.

Hi marsilians,

Is there a reason you left out Pankaj Udhas, Mohd. Rafi, Talat Aziz, & Rahat Ali Khan?

Pankaj Udhas and Talat Aziz played too much to the gallery, so most of their music is very pop oriented. The latter is very talented and has sung a few good ghazals. Talat stayed with, and learned music from Mehadi Hasan for many years, and can sing just like him. Unfortunately he was good looking and got distracted into acting, modeling etc. I wish that he had an ugly face, and we could have had another Mehdi Hasan in India.

I am a big fan of Modh. Rafi, but his ghazals were not the best part of his work. In fact he was much better at bhajans, both in films and private albums.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a good budding artist. His versions of his father's Quawallis are not bad. His hindi movie songs are great. His pop albums are pathetic. I don't think he is too much into ghazals.

BTW, there are many more good Ghazal singers I had not listed in my earlier post, such as Abida Parween, Sumona Roy Biswas, Chitra Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Ahmad Husain-Muhammad Husain, Asha Bhonsle, Hariharan, etc. It is a never ending list.

Regards,
Sharad

Have this lying somewhere, now that Venkaji has reminded me I've to locate and rip it. Guys, you have to listen to her. Amazing vocals as Venkatji has pointed out. In fact this collection/compilation is a great place to start off with.

that looks like a nice album. i've got piece by piece but this one has all of her best. is she singing with 'the' eva cassidy (who died in mid 90's)???

Now you are talking!! America is some seriously good music. If you like America, I bet you like Moody Blues also.

Cheers

Oh yeah Venkatji. I must have worn out so many copies of Nights In White Satin on tape, but even their other work is very good. Unfortunately most are stuck only on Nights In White Satin. I have most of their albums, about 7 in fact. Great group...

Amazing, amazing album. Just love Mick Hucknall. You have to hear him sing. At the very least a Greatest Hits or a Best Of compilation of Simply Red is a must.

Hi Anil,
Actually there are so many "best of" compilations of APP that am not too sure of the one u have. Actually i have none of the greatest hits/best of the group but have all their albums but one. I love all the APP instrumentals and the albums i like are eye in the sky, ammonia avenue, stereotomy, vulture culture, gaudi and a compilation which is good is " Hits in the sky " in my opinion. I also feel most APP are good recordings.
This evening i heard sur la mer by moody blues. (love the tracks Want to be with you, No more lies )

Of all the APP songs Limelight and Stereotomy are my favorites.

Limelight is one of the well mixed tracks which are used to set up an audio system using the APP 'SoundCheck II' setup CD.

By the way, Sound Check 2 is really invaluable if youwant to set the levels on your Home Theater as it comes with a really cool LED spl meter.

My brother sent me one.
Apart from them, I like Alison Moyet, FR David, Chris de burgh, Sivamani, Madhav Chari, Bee Gees, Madonna, Enya etc.

Paul McCartney -ALL THE BEST.
Mediocre recording but some lovely tracks namely No more lonely nights, silly love songs, let'em in, pipes of peace and the silly duet with MJ called say say say.

Nat king cole -Ramblin' Rose and much more. Now this is an evergreen cd.
The voice of the man and the lovely music.

Just bought A.R.Rehman's Signature collection from roja to Jai Ho.3 CDs for Rs.160 only.
Songs from Gajani,Delhi6,Slumdog to Roja,Rangila ,Sahiya included.

Yet more of the same stuff, though its said Ms. Jones wrote the material herself on this album.

Well if you liked the first album (which I did) then you will like the others too seeing they are all in the same vein. Not much change in terms of artistic expression here. Guess its like Neil Diamond/Phil Collins, if you've heard one, you've heard them all.

I too love these Nora albums. I like the 1st and 3rd better. "Sinkin' Soon" on the last album listed here is awesome and stands apart.

My very first introduction to Chris Rea was On The Beach, amazing track and the guitar streak on it was just awesome (way, way back when I was a kid). Ended up with this album and trust me this is an absolute must have.

Excellent album. It's said Chris wrote the song Road To Hell stuck in a car in a traffic jam for hours. They ran out of cigarettes and started smoking the cigarette butts all over again.

Beautiful album yet again. Melodic, romantic, mellow, simply awesome.

Not bad, but I had high expectations from this album. Saw the Grammy nomination and reviews, so ordered it from Amazon.com. The list of artists is mind blowing, but the album sounds like studio assembled soulless music (the kind AR Rahman has been dishing out lately). There is no synergy between the artists. I doubt if they ever actually met. Recorded live, this could have beaten "Jazz at the Pawn Shop".
