After a lot of demo's and searches for demos (Panny) and waiting - I finally bought the Samsung 51F5500 Plasma 3D. It got delivered today (Laxmi Puja day) but is still in a box and has not been installed or Demo'ed by the Samsung team.

M first choice was the Panny ST60 Plasma but I could not find one to buy. In any case, Panny plasma days are over as a couple of days back the company itself made an announcement. I heard excellent reviews about the 51F5500 so bought it.

It's a plasma so I want to manage the intial usage to prevent IR and other issues. Any pointers on this would be most useful.

Does the F5500 come with IR prevention software or modes? Where can I download the IR "Bands" file.

Glad that the search is over and I can enjoy the EPL and movies in a better tv.

Where did you get the Samsung SMART 3 Year warranty from?

SMART Extended warranty is directly from Samsung. Pls contact the customer care and they will guide you.

Congratulations !!!
F5500 has the built in protection. The "pixel shift" is ON by default.
Menu - System - Screenburn protection
You can see pixel shift on and "Scrolling" option.

The technicial may keep the contrast, brightness etc at high level.
Set it to below 50.

Please go through the post by "just4kix" on Image retention prevention.
This is a reference post in this forum for all the plasma buyers.
You can download the break-in slides from the link and play through USB pendrive.

Finally got one !! Got a good deal of 65k excluding the BD player. (Already have a WD HD player, PS3 & laptop).

Thanks to all contributors in this thread, was able to do all the research needed before you actually demo a unit.

Looks beautiful, exactly what i wanted. I would any day take natural calm colors over over bright, vibrant ..

Few questions:
1) Did you guys get the normal black color remote in addition to the one for smart tv ?
2) For Skype Video chat, do we have to buy & add camera as an accessory ??
3) How do you easily change Airtel DTH channels using smart remote ? (With my airtel remote I am only able to change channels, rest all is smart remote)
4) Can you play 1080P 3D/non 3D mkvs directly from the Tv using usb drive also does it support DTS tracks directly ?

Have to calibrate the TV for correct settings plus run the break in slides and get couple of HDMI 1.4 cable for now ...

**The store i got it from had brilliant customer service. 2 Other guys also bought the same tv when i was in the shop. Paid bill at 17:30, delivered at 19:30 as promised, was installed by 20:00 .. Was amazed by the speed at the entire sale was done ...

Nope..Only smart remote


2) For Skype Video chat, do we have to buy & add camera as an accessory ??

you can buy it and connect it..but it is about 7k..if u already have a laptop with a camera use that itself..


3) How do you easily change Airtel DTH channels using smart remote ? (With my airtel remote I am only able to change channels, rest all is smart remote)

you can tap once on the touch pad..it will enable gestures..u can draw the number you want.. for eg draw 3...then 4...then 9 to reach 349.. trust me..its such a pain... i stuck to the stb remote till i decided to buy a harmony 650.. now im settled.. only when i need to use the smart apps i use the smart remote..

it does support...

the tv itself has break in slides..just go to settings and look for screen burn protection..

also turned on zoom to get channel logo out of screen, but still some channels half logos are visible :sad:

Is this ok, Please share your settings
We have to keep these settings for 2/3 weeks?

Also can we watch 2 channels at same time(PIP)?

This is my setting:
Pic mode : Standard
cell light 8
Contrast 30
Brightness 35
Sharpness 0
Color 45

Isn't it your brightness setting too low? Are you comfortable with that?
I did not try PIP.
These initial setting for 200-300 hrs. You can also run the break in slides.

At last I bought F5500 last Saturday, got it installed yesterday. PQ is very good for HD channels & okay for SD, am using Tatasky. Sound quality is also very good.

I see that it is generating heat as I can sense it when standing near by. Is this normal for a plasma?

Enabling the 2D-3D mode or 3D mode is changing all the settings to increase the brightness for 3D.
The contrast is changed to 100 ( max limit ) and cell light to 20(max limit).
I think then it is not safe to watch 3D during the break in period. So i have turned off 3D mode immediately.

Would it be ok to change the back to normal setting and watch 3D?
I would like to watch Avatar 3D ( downloaded ).
Please share your thoughts.

It will not be too much heat. Isn't it a warm feeling when you go near the screen after few hours of usage? Then it is normal.
