Samsung Plasma 51F5500 Owners Thread /Reviews/Discussions!!

Got my 51F5500 installed last night and was amazed at the size of the TV! Seriously, I don't know how people get a 64'' .. it must be gigantic :-). I saw a little of a HD movie and some non HD football last night. It is currently being IR-protected by running the break-in slides.
My initial comments:

1. Got a brief demo from the "engineer". He activated wi-fi and showed some SMART features but i don't know what would I use the wi-fi or SMART for?

2. Stand Mounted for now. Engineer said I can ask for a wall mount installation free within 6 months of purchase.

3. The set is straight forward to set up and use. I got only the Smart remote. The track feature takes a little getting used to but is nifty.

4. As luck would have it, Star Movies HD was showing Men In BLACK last night. It was my first content and it ROCKED. The set hasn't broken in but Plasma is for MOVIES. Looked awesome. The sky and star scenes were black and white.. Like in a theatre.

5. Audio out -> TV has Optical Out only. Disappointed. I have a Amp and wanted to feed the TV audio out into the Amp. Can't do. Does a Optical <-> RCA exist? I would have to get audio out from STB :(

6. Sports: Hmmm I was only able to watch a non-HD Ten Action football and it did NOT look great. I am a huge huge sports fan and bought the TV to watch movies and sports.
Would the HD sports look better? Is there any setting to use for SD content to look better? Or am i having buyers remorse .. the Sony W950 looked awesome for motion atleast on the demo content. Am i going to be disappointed in Sports PQ on a Plasma :(

7. I am running Break-in slides right now. TV has barely been used for 3 hours so far ..

8. Extended Warranty: Sammy is offering 3 year extended warranty for around 9000/- ??!! The engineer looked at a sheet and quoted 9000/-. Does it sound right? It does seem a lot.

I will update as i use it longer .. Loving it so far ..

Congrats.

As Eliza Dolittle sang (in My Fair Lady) "Just you wait, Mr. Higgins ... Just you wait", I will sing

"Just you wait, Mr. Vishal ... Just you wait"

Smart features and Smart apps are useless ... maybe YouTube to an extent and that too if you have 4 mbps internet.

Get it wall mounted as soon as possible. Not that there is anything wrong with stand-mount.

5. Audio out -> TV has Optical Out only. Disappointed. I have a Amp and wanted to feed the TV audio out into the Amp. Can't do. Does a Optical <-> RCA exist? I would have to get audio out from STB :(
Optical out from TV will be downmixed 2.0 most likely. Why don't you feed the AVR with the optical out from STB?

HD will look better. SD is what SD is. There is not much you can do. As far as demo content on Sony W950, it is the demo content that is fantastic. That content is true HD (1080p) whereas your DTH is highly compressed, even in HD. When I compare my own DVD (upscaled to 1080p by BD Player), it is much better (maybe twice as better) than the TataSky HD (which is supposed to be the best DTH HD). Blu-Ray is awesome and altogether a different level.

Little high but worth. Bargain a little and buy. I think 7500 should be cool.

Good to know!
You are right the screen space is large and you will get adjusted with it.

Smart features : YouTube and samsung applications etc.?

Please make sure the cell light, brightness and contrast setting is below 50%.
All other image enhancement, dynamic contrast OFF.
Technician may set it high saying it is ok Sir :)
I had to change the setting.

I also watch EPL and Champions league and Spanish LaLiga. I have really enjoyed the latest match of FC Barcelona v/s AC Milan in Ten HD. It is stunning in Ten HD and not that good in ten action.

Extended Warranty: It is Rs.8400 + service charge+ VAT for 3yrs warranty.
You can directly contact Samsung customer care. I have taken this last month and got the warranty certificate few days back.
Warranty prices are standard and the ASC will have this sheet.

Congrats on the purchase..

Most of the questions u had asked have been discussed previously a lot.. Pls look a little but in the previous pages..

Cheers

Sunil, Just4Kix: Thank you for your comments. Reg. the wall mount, I started a thread on wall mount, pls feel free to comment there:
http://www.hifivision.com/television/47930-wall-mount-vs-tv-stand-your-hdtv.html

I have a bunch of AV equipment so have to plan it well. I feel there is no point in just wall mounting a TV while everything else is scattered. Good wall mounting would need cable management, power sockets and good quality rack - and all that takes time and can wait.
I didnt want to rush into it...

Just4Kix commented: " Optical out from TV will be downmixed 2.0 most likely. Why don't you feed the AVR with the optical out from STB?"

I have a Stereo Amp not an AVR. So the STB (video) out via HDMI goes to TV and STB audio goes to Amp.

Then TV output is useless. But then I didn't understand what you exactly wanted.

After a lot of soul searching, decided to exchange my perfectly functioning 5 year old Panasonic 42 inch PDP for the 51F5500. Got it today at Croma Mega Mall Oshiwara at 65k with BDP in exchange for the old plasma. Not a very good price, I know, but didn't have the energy to haggle beyond a limit.

Been thinking about this for quite some time and feeling relieved that its done. Hope I've not been conned.

If you are satisfied then nothing else matters. So relax and chill /celebrate with a beer or whatever you prefer.

Right Kix. Happiness is in the mind, as they say.

Beer (or anything else of its ilk) is unfortunately not my poison, but I guess I'll celebrate (once the beast is installed, of course) in the best way possible, i.e. with a few BDs that I've been saving for watching on the new TV.

Christopher Nolan, here I come ......:yahoo:

Can I ask you why did you exchange the old Plasma? 42'' is not a small size at all .. you could've waited for a few years and bought OLED .. ?

Just curious

No single compelling reason - rather, a combination of factors.

1. The existing PDP, though a 5 star rated product of its time (how important are these stars anyway ?), is of 2007 vintage and the plasma universe has moved on since then. The panels of even mid level PDPs are much better nowadays, and 51F5500 is well regarded, except for its heliophobic issues.
2. The existing Pana is a single HDMI, 720p, non WiFi, non-24 fps panel.
3. I am not a great fan of 3D (none of my 300+ BDs are 3D) but my son will be able to play PS3 games in 3D.
4. Size does matter !!!

Finally, ever hear of the disease called "upgraditis" ???

Man, Iam sorry to say but deal does not look good. You can get F5500 at 69k with bd. Also you could have sold panna plasma at 15k easily in market.

Did a group buy yesterday, where my friend bought the 51F5500 and i bought the 64" F8500model. No stocks were available locally currently for the 51F5500. So they billed under Diwali offer and will give the delivery in one week's time.

Total landing cost after lot of negotiation, for 51F5500 with free blu ray player 66,800.

One more 51" F5500 purchased yesterday by a friend in Mumbai. After lot of negotiation he got the price of 69K. He also bought a Sony home theater along with it.

Are the below settings fine for the first 150 odd hours, i have picked them up from this thread itself.

am using the below setting. Lowered cell light , contrast and brightness
Cell light 10 (technician set this as 15)
Contrast 40 ( his setting was 85 )
Brightness 40 (his setting was 50 )
Sharpness 15
Colour 40
Tint (G/R) in the middle

Technician did the below advanced setting
Dynamic contrast - low
Black tone - darkest
Flesh tone - 0
Rgb only mode -off
Gamma - 0

If not if anyone could please share their setting for the first 100 hours.
