Sony HX 820/920 review & discussion

Nice to find out that it is cheaper on letsbuy.com site. However, it mentions 2 3D glasses free. Not the skype camera module ?

Festival offers are just a gimmick sort of. But this time when I asked about the discount for multiple sets bought together, he said its possible. (Sony Center, aundh). Thats why at least once we can go together and try negotiating. Then individually we can decide to go ahead with the purchase or not.

thetas, let us know about the deal you are getting. then we can see where to go.

I already talked with Sony Center about group purchase. 1,49 if the bills need to have individual names of all the members of the group and 1,44 if all the sets are purchased under 1 person's name.

Yes...I will soon update the deal I am getting.
Yes..we can go togather to strike the deal

Same as mentioned in the website. The freebies are offered by Sony India and not the dealers. Whether you pay 153900 or 144000 the Sony freebies are included. Nobody will give additional freebies.

Thanks. Btw, I visited sony center today and looked at the HX925. As usual they played the tourist Bluray and the pixelization can be clearly seen in some scenes (not sure if that is how the movie was made). Also watched the SD channels from normal tatasky stb (not the HD one) and the bleeding is seen near the digits/alphabets. Have you guys noticed this? However the 3D demo was awesome on this TV. Do you know where can I watch the sony HX/NX modes side by side with samsung models? Croma in Aundh does not have HX models and it does not even has samsung D7000 in display.

I too was put off by SD quality of HX 925 (and the 720s) with tatasky hd. Although I could not make a side by side comparision, after watching hx 925 in Aundh I immediately went to Panasonic Baner brand shop and watched same channels there on 50st30 and felt the SD quality better.
Now this is a unfair comparision as it could be due to source/type of connection but I am concerned as majority of time my TV will run SD content.
I could do a side by side comparision of 55ex720 and Samsung 51D550 on same source (Tatasky HD) at Huns MG road. For SD I found D550 was better.

By the way Huns is ready to offer discount for group buys irrespective of brand/model except Sony as thier policies are real strict.

What you are referring to is blooming, common to fully backlit LED TVs. Think of it as being similar to clouding/backlight bleeding in CCFL/edge lit based LCDs but on more localized areas because the way the LEDs are arranged(as arrays almost all over the screen)

The put off factors for me in an LCD-LED are:
1) Off-axis viewing angles.
2) Motion issues though there are superior LCD-LED breeds that can stand up to Plasma.
3) Backlight bleeding and inconsistency. In this regard Plasma with poorer blacks are more watchable than LCD-LEDs.

I hope manufacturers fix these issues rather than spending on 3D. Btw, any news about LG 980 LCD-LED?

Do note the HX like any other Sony tv is set it showroom mode/torch mode .

Once you calibrate or tone down the settings it should make significant improvement in PQ and especially blooming.

While plasma still have the edge in off axis, how many are actually going to watch it at those extreme viewing angles, one has to be rather unfortunate to watch tv at those angles.
Agreed some lcd panels wash out badly like SMVA tech but SPVA and IPS is rather good enough . The proprietary panel in the HX92 is more then adequate ,it only starts to deteriorates at say after around 50 to 60 each side.

Sony does preserve the picture characteristics at off axis better than Samsung for sure. They D8000 was bluish even with a tilt of 5 degrees. LG holds well too.

I agree with amol12 about the SD quality. Watched airtel DTH on HX925 at JM Rd sony center. Coming from the CRT world, at first glance it looks very bad. Then adjusted few settings. It became watchable but still not good. Changed aspect ratio to 4:3 and allowed two black bars on both sides. After that it was much better. StarPlus HD was too good. However NatGeo HD on airtel has some problems I guess. It was simply bad. Plugged in a DVD. It was ok, watchable. Then plugged in a VCD. It was not at all watchable.

Most of my viewing will also be SD channels until many of them convert to HD.
May be smaller screen sizes will be ok to view SD channels. But once you view HD content on a 46" and know that HD is the future, then I don't feel like going with a smaller TV because I will be keeping it atleast for 6-8 years.

Mahavir Eletronics Multibrand shop from Bibvewadi quoted 1,43K for purchase of 3. Additionally -2000 for buyback for a 13 year old CRT lying in the house.

Enquring in Vijay Sales Satara Road was hilarious, Salesman said its non moving model so its termed flop so Sony has discontinued HX925, on this I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I insisted on the deal; his manager unwillingly quoted me 1,50K.

I will soon update the deal from Radhika Nigdi...didn't get chance to visit and strike a deal.

Guys: Lets confirm how many of us from Pune are buying..Please add to the list.

I am out. I will go for a plasma.

Hi just to heat up the discussion, Agreed. pq is outstanding in hx925 and st30 and vt30 initially. Both plasma and led have their pros and cons. But seriously, which tv will last long, say, 6 to 8 years(forget 60k and 1 lac hrs) on normal viewing of various contents. Plasma weakness is burn in, black level rise, gas discharge getting weak so on. led has backlight bleed, uneven screen uniformity etc etc. Considering this which tv is more durable:rolleyes:

Well in terms of long lasting both won't reach those 5 and 6 digit hrs.
But its safe to say that lcd will have the edge it produces less heat, has fewer components ,doesn't need active cooling its power supply isn't stressed as much as a plasma.

Without historical and statistical data nothing can be said. I am not aware of any reports which say that out of x% of plasmas sold in 2000-2010 had one or other issues vs y% of LED/LCS sold in the same period! Similar to what like automobile surveys produce. Its another matter on whether one would trust them.

Personally for me
1. my 5yr old LCD monitor has developed dead/stuck pixels. It is rarely used by the way.
2. I have seen couple of LCD monitors in office with backlights gone bad in couple of years.
3. I have seen a plasma burn-in on a airport.

Dont conclude anything from above :).

I tend to agree with the above. Led tends to lose its sheer brightness as days go by. just as plasma tend to lose black levels, led tend to lose brightness over a period of time( Article based, not my opinion, i am not an expert). Most of the led being edge lit, screen uniformity in the long run will be definite issue according to my engineering uncle. He says if plasma is used intelligently, it ll last longer. but depends on the quality of the discharge they use inside.
