Sony launches a new Blu-ray player at Rs. 9,999/-

Will exFat do ? There is no option to do a fat32 or fat16 format with my vista laptop.

This was the first time I heard of exFat. It seems Microsoft has not released licenses for exFat nor has it released the file specifications. I doubt Blu-Ray and DVD Players will have the algorithm to read the format. In addition exFat is closer to NTFS in terms of names and sizes.

There is not harm in trying though.

Cheers

This was some time ago, and although I was told it would work, I never put it to the test.

Download Compuapps Swiss Knife V3. Apparently it is able to make one Fat 32 partition on a large hard drive.

Install it on your HDD.
Connect your External HDD and then proceed to partition and format the external HDD using the app.

I'm told that although the larger HDDs can be formatted, the 4 GB filesize issue remains. So all files larger than 4 gigs have to be split into 2/more parts.

I am planning to go for this and have been reading the thread for sometime. My concerns so far:
-while it supports multi-region DVD, BRD supports only region C (a common concern I suppose)
- read that only Sony WiFi dongle is supported, not available in the shops I inquired. Has anyone tried 3rd party dongles? Which ones work and where can I get them?
- My old Onkyo HT (DR-L50) has only optical input. Optical cables are not sold in these show rooms. I am in Hyderabad, any suggestions where I can get them? Would like to but the player and accessories together to get the best out of it.
- My Full HD TV has HDMI inputs, but not my HT. What would be the best option to connect:
- connect TV through HDMI and mute the volume
- connect HT through optical cable and use it for audio

I tested some really scratched DVDs in the showroom and this BD player seems to play them without any hitch. My Onkyo plays only really clean DVDs i.e. doesn't accept even one scratch on the disk.

Unfortunately, nothing at ALL can be done about this right now.

Finding the right wifi dongle is like looking for a needle in a haystack. You'd have the know the OEM source for Sony's dongle - and then again, the firmware might be different...

There are alternatives, though:

Only the Sony USB dongle can be used. Third party USB dongles would require proprietary drivers and there is no means by which to load these required drivers onto the player. You can use an ethernet bridge rather than a USB dongle. An ethernet bridge gives the ethernet port on the player wireless functionality so that you can comunicate wirelessly via the ethernet port to a router.

dante01 said:
Just plug the bridge into the ethernet port of the S370 and you should be able to use it in conjunction with your existing wireless LAN.

Buffalo Nfiniti Wireless-N Dual Band Ethernet Converter: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

It basically makes the wired ethernet port wireless. The bridge sends and receives wirelessly and connects to the ethernet port. The S370 sees the bridge as being a wired connection and your existing wireless LAN sees it as being a wireless device.

The Buffalo Nfiniti Wireless-N Dual Band Ethernet Converter is cheaper than the Sony dongle and also allows you to connect another three ethernet devices if needed.

Sorry, unable to help you there. Are there no specialist audio/HT stores in Hydrabad? If there are, maybe you should first try looking there.

Yes, but bear in mind that you'd be getting DD and DTS only.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. On the last point -

What would I be missing? Can I use ordinary A/V cables for audio playback etc. in that case?

I'm drastically simplifying the information, okay?

Well, Blu-ray is capable of a lot more than DVD is, sonically.

Apart from the lossy cinema version of DD and DTS (DVDs actually have a crippled version of this), BDs are also capable of storing a DD/DTS lossless signal.

The Lossless variations produce better audio and are known as DD True HD and DTS HD Master Audio. Think of it in terms of this simple analogy: MP3 = DD/DTS whereas CD = DD True HD and DTS HD Master Audio.

Now, what happens is that the lossless and lossy versions of the signal are stored in a combined signal as the core/extensions. Think of it as a tiny sphere in the centre of a much larger sphere.

The core consists of the basic lossy DD/DTS signal. The extensions consist of the remainder of the signal that is lossless.

When you play a BD through Optical or co-axial, all you'll get out of there is the core lossy DD/DTS signal. This is marginally better than DVD, but nowhere near as good as what Blu ray is capable of when the lossless extensions are added.

Unfortunately, for bandwidth (and I suspect copy protection issues) Dolby True HD and DTS HD master Audio are only available through HDMI, which you don't have.

Not advisable to connect the player through analogue (component) for video - you won't be squeezing the best out of it.

If your receiver has a 5.1 or 7.1 analogue inputs (and some do whilst others do not) then, to get the high quality audio you'll have to get a more expensive player that has 5.1/7.1 analogue outputs. The Sony at Rs. 9999/- MRP doesn't have those. If your receiver does not have those, then there's no point in spending that extra money on a player that has those outputs.

Thanks again for this simplified, yet a comprehensive reply. I bought it on Sunday and tested it with my receiver and TV by connecting optical and HDMI cables respectively. I was able to select DD True HD and DTS HD Master Audio in the BD player apart from other lower rate signals and the display on the receiver changes to DD/DTS/Prologic II etc. I need to experiment more with different content and hope that I am not missing much, if not anything.

On the whole, it is really good. But I feel the picture is slightly grainy (esp. for Legion) i.e. not as smooth and soft as the demo disks of Sony etc. I observed this at the showroom as well. I was told it's the problem with the disc's recording.

I tried connecting a western digital external harddrive to this player via USB cable and it says "UNIDENTIFIED DEVICE" !

i tried using my western digital 1 tb and it said "UNIDENTIFIED DEVICE".
i called the sony support and they told me that the max capacity for an external device is 16 gb.
can anyone please confirm?
also, can we hack the region code to play allre gion BD's with the all for one remote?

From a PDF of the Manual:

Some files may not play depending on the format,
the encoding, or recording condition.
Some files edited on a PC may not play.
The player can recognise the following files or
folders in BDs, DVDs, CDs and USB devices:
up to folders in the 5th tree
up to 500 files in a single tree
Some USB devices may not work with this
player.
The player can recognise Mass Storage Class
(MSC) devices (such as flash memory or an
HDD) that are FAT-compatible and nonpartitioned
,
Still Image Capture Device (SICD)
class devices and 101 keyboard (front USB jack
only).
To avoid data corruption or damage to the USB
memory or devices, turn the player off when
connecting or removing the USB memory or
devices.
The player may not play high bit rate video files
on DATA CDs smoothly. You are recommended
to play such files using DATA DVDs.

I used my Region 1 DVD's and they worked. I remember reading that it does not play Region 1. Could some one please clarify.
Also, I played the Transformers All Region BD, I have yet to try a Region A BD.
Has anyone tried? Does it work?
Any crack available???????????
If it does not play Region A, then I am stuck with this player.
Has Sony come up with a solution?
I could have bought the Seagate Theater plus...
:(

It has been stated on this thread time and time again that the Sony BDP-S370 is multi-region only for DVDs.
The BDP-S370 CANNOT play BDs from Region A and B. It is region locked to C. So far, there's no way to change this.

Someone has rushed out and purchased a BPD-S370 without reading this thread, properly. :p

It plays region 1 dvd's . I have tried.I think the region lock is only applicable for blu rays for this player. I dont think there will be a official "solution " for that. For players like oppo third party mods are available, if somone develops similar mods for this !!

There will definitely be a market for it given that the this little player from Sony is somewhat of a best-seller everywhere.

Well, sorry about that.

One thing's for certain, though. If a multi-region solution for BD playback becomes available for the BDP-s370, this forum will be one of the first to discuss it as many of us have this player. :)

Hey guys i inserted a A region BD yday and it played??? The BD was Ultra Violet the Theatrical Cut Edition PG13 which i picked up from Hong Kong. Does this mean it plays all regions?? So far id played region free and C region BD only. I have a region A coded PS3 as well. Yday by chance inserted the region A BD in the Sony BDP-S370 and it played smoothly! Will try a few more A coded BDs and get back.

Are you sure the disc wasn't regions A & C? I've seen some discs marked Region B & C and that worked flawlessly too.
