Sony launches a new Blu-ray player at Rs. 9,999/-

Oh, I didn't know DVD-A also was involved in the disc format wars.

[off-topic]Its surprising that I have got a mass market LG DVD player (cost around 3k) ...about 5 years old which can play DVD-A...whereas none of the current generation mass market DVD players do so.[/off-topic]

Yes, there was the format war between DVD-A and SACD. Needless to say both formats suffered from mutually assured destruction in the mass market. Not sure about DVD-A but SACD is still lingering on, though.

To my knowledge, Sony's never released any player that plays DVD-A, I fully expect this Sony BD player to follow the pattern of leaving out DVD-A playback.

Well, I personally know of only a few artists (actually, just one...Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson) who release their music on DVD-A as well. You are probably right about SACDs...I guess they are more popular.

I wouldn't use the word "popular". It's a niche market limited to enthusiasts who happen to like the SACD sound.

Hehe...yes, I meant that only...in the niche market itself, SACDs are popular compared to DVD-As. Just my observation though, going through various hi-fi boards & sites.

@mgdelhi

1) Congratulations on your purchase. :)

2) Regarding the sound quality, this set plays CDs and SACD's - I'm wondering if the playback of CDs is better than the sub Rs. 5000/- DVD players.

3) Regarding the 2 free BDs - are you allowed to choose them or is everyone given the same two discs?

Thank you KDM. :)

The 2 free BDs are inside the box. So, there is no option 2 choose BDs of your choice.

Hi,

I purchased one for my parents in Bangalore. Purchased from the Sony Centre down the road from Croma near HRBR layout on outer ring road in bangalore.

total price on card - INR9790. apart from the free Bds, there is also a decent quality free HDMI cable inside as well.

Photos have already been posted, so i'll just post my impressions. Setup was very easy with the wizard (feeding 1080i to an HD-ready 40" samsung)

build quality is a little less than satisfying.

Manual is simple but some picture adjustment parameters are not clearly explained.

crossbar interface is simple to use and a doddle for anyone used to a PS3

Picture quality is difficult to comment on as I cannot do a like to like comparo with my normal references, but I did notice that it plays DIVX HD and also supports MKVs in all standard resolutions right upto 1080. so that's a big plus for the ripping crowd!

Overall seems a good buy and I hope my parent also get hooked to HD due to it.

cheers

A friend of mine had trouble playing pirated DVDs on his Sony DVD player. In fact, the disc won't be read at all. Don't remember the model number though. So not sure how wise it is to buy a Sony BDP which can only play legitimate, region C BDs. Given that each disc costs about 1000/-, I am not sure how many one can afford. I am not promoting piracy or anything like that. It's just that sometimes you are forced to buy pirated discs when the legitimate disc either has not been launched or is heavily censored.

I would think, that is a relfection of the quality of the 'pirated' DVD, not the player. It's not like the player is discriminating. There is no way, for the player to know that you are playing a pirated or original disk.

By the way, since you are referring to pirated DVDs, comparing the cost with Blu-ray prices, makes no sense. As for original DVDs, they cost anywhere between Rs. 40/- and Rs. 399/- Since, you are happy with pirated DVDs, obviously quality is not of much importance to you anyhow, so the Rs. 40/ DVDs should be just fine for you. By the way, even the price of Blu-rays start at Rs. 499/-

Given that each disc costs about 1000/-, I am not sure how many one can afford. I am not promoting piracy or anything like that.
Aah, the old unaffordabilty excuse. Arre yaar chori karte ho to atleast have the balls to openly admit it, instead of making flimsy excuses. By the way, I can't afford the really nice looking car I saw in the store today. I suppose that means, I have the moral right to steal it, or at the very least buy a stolen one.

I am not promoting piracy or anything like that. It's just that sometimes you are forced to buy pirated discs when the legitimate disc either has not been launched or is heavily censored.
Nahi nahi, ofcourse you are not promoting 'piracy'. It's just that due to our poor comprehension of the English language, it just seems like you are promoting piracy. Also, ofcourse you are absolutely right, it's not your fault that you bought stolen goods, pirated DVDs etc. after all you were FORCED TO BUY them. Just like 'Surender Koli' is not guilty of raping and murdering those girls. After all woh kya karta, he did not have any other way of gratfiying his sexual urges, so he was 'FORCED TO RAPE & MURDER'.

^Oh well, no chance of it replacing my WDTV then. Cheers.

like I mentioned a few posts, back, i purchased the player for my parents.

i liked it so much that I purchased one for myself and have connected it my main ht, with a wireless connection.

while i have not had a chance to fully check it out, out of the box, it has an amazingly good picture, vibrant, and very clear edge definition. will post some screenies when I can.

@techhead, i dunno, if it will read NTFS formatted discs (should not) but i'll try today / tomorrow. however, it has no problems identify the media server on my nas and playing some avis that were on the NAS.

will need to check for mkvs, but the manual clearly states mkv support.

there is a iphone /ipod app which allows you to control the BDP from your Iphone/ipod touch and I can report that it works as stated.

overall, i'm quite happy with the buy!

cheers

Hi,

I got a Sony BDP-S373 for 110$ from the UK last month. <10k in India for this player is a great price. The video and audio quality is exceptional.

It plays DVD-A and SACD as well.

Cheers to all who are planning to buy this one.
