Sony launches a new Blu-ray player at Rs. 9,999/-

I don't this has been asked before but does this player support DTS-HD decoding?

The Sony India website clearly states that it internally decodes only Dolby HD with no mention of DTS-HD. I'm assuming that means the DTS-HD signal just gets dumped via HDMI for your receiver to handle.

I plan to visit a Sony store sometime this week to check out the USB support with a bunch of MKV rips and to test DTS support. I'm hoping to purchase this instead of a WD TV Live. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)

Holy kaw, this thread was everything else except the poor player.

So, I read the whathifi review in the magazine, uk review linked here Sony BDP-S370 Blu-ray player review - from the experts at whathifi.com, heard the Sony showroom guy swear it's multi-region, found the chroma guys saying the same, found this hack on a respectable site Sony BDP-S370 region code - DVD Players and Blu-ray Players region codes - VideoHelp.com.

And I bought it. Frikkin bought it without a test. Looked like good value: Chroma's selling it for <9800, includes HDMI cable and two BDs (Legion, & MJ's This Is It).

Now I just hope it loads faster than an Oppo. I'll be cool then.

^how's the player overall, does it allow to play files(.mkv) through USB port from external hard drive .

am planning to buy one soon.

Hi Friends ,

Have a problem. Recently bought Sony BDP-S370 with Bravia EX400 for my bedroom and these are connected by HDMI cable. There is no other specific HT setup. But while playing a disk, both DVDs and BRs , the sound is extremely low. I have to raise the volume level of TV almost 80% of the full volume to hear the movie sound.Am I missing any setup here. The TV sound is perfect with Tata Sky. Can anyone kindly help.

hi,

i can confirm that it plays a full-fat *.mkv from the usb.. I played a file that had bitrate spikes upto 33mbps and a dts 1.5 mbps sound track. no stuttering or any other issues

as for dlna- it recognises both my NAS and the windows media player server. however, it's not picking up mkvs from there.. could be a NAS issue or something else. -it did play some demo hd content i had in avi format on my compueter - served by wmp, but that stuttered a lot (could be the network, it was a wireless link--> NAS->1gps-wireless router->wireless N - airport express->100mbps-cat5-s370)

have not had much time to experiment, but the player is fast, great picture, runs cool - i'm still delighted with it.

will uodate a little more after i fiddle a little bit with my NAS

Hi everybody sony india has just launched a new Blu-ray player ( Blu-ray Disc Players : Home Video : Sony India ) at a very low price of Rs. 9,999/- i wanted to buy a good BDP under 15000/- so all u pro out there one question is it a good player considering its low price? can it be moded as region free?

Icing on the cake, Sony dealers are also offering one HDMI cable and two Blue Ray Discs free of cost with the player.

What do you mean by full-fat? How large of a file has the player been able to read? TIA.

full fat means

video -> avc high profile level 4.1,
audio -> dts 1.5mbps

since i tried with a 4GB pendrive (3.7 GB formatted), I had copied a 3.2 GB file fragment.

i think that fat32 places a 4GB size limitation.

Does it support FAT-free NTFS partition? I am concerned about my health :)
The FAT limit is too small also.

:ohyeah:
i only just realised the simile..

what I had meant by full fat was.. all bells n whistles.. a high bitrate HD movie with a high bitrate soundtrack..

I'll try will an 8GB pendrive that I have lying around. IIRC it does not support NTFS.

Thanks. In the meantime I finally made it to a Sony store and demo'ed the player. It could read my 8GB pendrive and funnily enough it played a DTS movie after complaining "unsupported audio format".

My concern is that the PQ from a ripped movie was kinda crappy when played on the 370 as compared to my WD TV Live. A lot of pixels, edge noise were immediately visible whereas the WD TV Live seems to do an amazing job smoothing them out so that unless you're actually looking for them you won't see them.

I don't know if this crappiness in PQ was because the 370 was outputting (via HDMI splitter) to a 1080p panel at the Sony store whereas the WD TV Live at home is outputting to a 720p PJ/Plasma. Would that make that much of a difference?? I personally don't think so.

I'm planning a second trip this weekend as the Sony store has promised that they will hookup the 370 directly to a TV.

Woah! If only PS3 starts supporting mkv. Till then, I will have to be happy streaming from my laptop :(

This player does support Bitstreaming, right? In that case, get Onkyo HT-3300 and enjoy full HD with not-so-full-hd 5.1 setup :P

No way it plays DVD-A mate.. no way :)
ok....i have played DVD-Audio already in it and I can confirm it plays DVD-A.

Sorry it was 110 GBP.

It has no DVD Audio logo on it - are you sure it can play the MLP lossless tracks on DVD Audio?

You bought it from the UK? From what I was told, all Sony BDP-S370 players in India are region hacked for DVD, right out of the box.

For those who did not buy the player at a Sony store, here are a couple of questions:

What price did you pay for it? Does it come with the HDMI cable/2 BDs in the box?

I'm feeling like biting later today... :p
