Sony launches a new Blu-ray player at Rs. 9,999/-

bite...

and buy at the sony store.. it's 200 bucks cheaper than other places pus the free hdmi cable

I just bit! :yahoo:

The Sony Centre at Elgin Road in Kolkata refused to give me the Rs. 200/- discount.

Still, it's a very nice set for the price especially with the discs/HDMI cable thrown in for free. Sure beats the hell out of going to e-mall at 7:00PM just to get an HDMI cable for my PS3, upon discovering that Sony did not include one in the box.

... and not for Blu-Ray? That wouldn't be nice. :(

Try living with a Region locked 5/C PS3. :p

I'm posting this separately to the last post.

Seems like the BDP-s 370 player is capable of displaying NTSC DVDs at 1080P/24. I got the shock of my life when I put in an NTSC DVD - TWISTER. and the TV displayed the input signal as being 1080P/24!!!!!

Can anyone verify this?

(For the record, my 370's resolution output is set as Automatic)

EDIT: Tried this again with From Russia With Love (Region 1 DVD) - again my TV ID'd it as being a 1080P/24 signal!!!!

I thought that every BD player would upscale your DVD to 1080p via HDMI. The 24 fps would be possibly part of the settings, you should be able to enable/disable it based on your preferences.

Uuuuh... I think you should return it with a complaint that the PQ is too good... :D

Sent from my iPod touch

Well since this is a 110v-240v model i believe like other Asian(except japan) sony products like their tvs support both NTSC and Pal based dvd.

All BD players upscale NTSC or PAL material, but the frame rate on most stays 30 or 25, depending on the material fed to the player. This seems to be one of the few players that eliminates the 3:2 pulldown on NTSC DVD movie material and presents it as 1080P/24.

PQ is very, very good indeed. :D

PQ is very good indeed. Connected the player through LAN to the mail computer and it works as a pretty decent media player as well to play music, video and photos.

i just bought it and returned home.
unfortunately it did not power it up when i plugged it into the socket:-(
i'll go back to croma (at aundh, pune) tomorrow morning at 11 am. hope they give me another piece.

You are supposed to switch on the socket and also the player. Try another cable as well :)

Cheers

Let us know if they give you another piece, okay?

Couple of other points to note. The BDP-S370 DOES NOT play DVD Audio. It DOES NOT also play VCDs or SVCDs according to the manual.

I had a look at the sony player this weekend. The thingy is so light; it is lighter than my slim line dvd player from pioneer. The build quality is so flimsy.

I guess now that the prices have dropped, all the sub 10k blu-ray players will be built like this! I have a sneaky feeling that this is good time to pick up the better build players which have been forced to cut prices to compete with the flimsy players hitting the market now.

And what are you going to do with the BD player? Use it as platform to store/stack books/journals?

+1 to that.

though the adjective's I'd have used are, light, silent & cool running rather than flimsy. also I'd be careful not to equate wt==build quality

I think the idea alluded to was that a heavy damped chassis will improve the transport quality. :)

Cheers

Well its the case with every product from every manufacturer once the price drops build quality drops.from tvs to phones to radio control cars, you name it.

Yes ;)

Ever tried lifting a Oppo BD 83 ? Or any other player which is build well ? The reason why they are built so well is to build the biceps of the end user :D

Heavily damped chassis, electronic parts quality, sturdy mechanisms contribute to the quality of the final output as well as longevity. There is a reason why hi-end players weigh more and are built well.

I am sure the Sony at this price is a steal ! Very high value for money ;)

Different people have different viewpoints to this. This is all that is alluded to.
