ST50 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Tweaks, etc.

Six years ago when we in India were first time exposed to HD revolution, I scouted for a HD tv.LCDs were horrible then. I went and bought a Sony XBR 1080i capable 34 inch(100 kg) CRT tv.
In fact it was a demo piece. But lack of HDMI
did not allow me to upscale dvds using a upscaling dvd player.

After living with it for 2 years, I found that lcds were getting better with led backlights and motion processing circuitary. Went and bought the first led tv of samsung. It was very bright and beautiful.

Then I upgrade my bdp to Denon 2012 which was a big leap in sound/picture.
Now I started to see motion issues and halos on my sammy!

So i ditched my led tv and got 50st50 after a thorough comparision with 46hx850(the best led tv in my opinion).
For me this plasma's picture was a giant leap in terms of overall experience compared to my sammy. It may be colors, contrasts etc.

My chase for the best picture was an evolution spanning various technologies and years. And now I can say that the "monkey finally became the man".

I may not be able to impress people straight. But given a little time with my TV , I bet that they will never again think about leds!

Thanks.

In the advanced picture setting, there is an an option called "Overscan". Turn it on and report.

Turned it on, still see jagged lines with both Killzone 2 and Infamous.

:(

Any suggestions just4kix?

Which Game mate..Though My ST50 is screwed with Banding, yet I am not sure if I saw jagged edges on it....

I have played, FIFA, UC3...

Slight edges would always be there given the nature of Plasma, i guess due to dithering...I mean plasma wont give sharpness like LED, due to dithering..Assume you are referring to edges on objects on gaming screen and not 16:9 aspect ratio

Also note I have played using both High contrast say 80+ and low contrast say 30-35.

Yeah, I'm talking about objects in the game. Playing infamous right now and the window bars, the sides of cars, pretty much everything has it. Tried with Killzone 2 as well.

Any idea?

I am getting bored of watching my 7 years old 29" CRT. It is still going strong but, I wanted the big screen experience and planning to upgrade it to 50" plasma. I looked around, decided to check Samsung 51E8000 and Panasonic 50ST50D, but by the time shops in Hyderabad gone out of stock of these plasmas. No hope of getting 51E8000 any more as I heard that this model is discontinued. I thought of booking 50ST50D now and wait for the stocks to arrive, but no dealer is confident on when the stocks are going to arrive.

By accident, I came across the following in this web page.

Now, I am in confusion. Not sure, if I should book the 50ST50D or wait for the 2013 model. I am again not sure how much time Panasonic will take to bring new models to India once they are launched.

2013 models will be announced by April and will be available by May our even June. Initial prices will be high.

Note here that PS3 doesnot support anti-aliasing... thats the reason for jagged lines. Though some games support/supply this options like BF3 under game menu.
At best you can reducing the sharpness in your tv option.

Well, I do not have answers. I do not play games on TV so I am unable to help much. Can you post a picture?

Plasma TV and the high power consumption argument

It has been often argued over threads that:
  • Plasma TV will bloat your power bill. Sensationalist claims were/are as high as "at least twice" your existing units.
  • TV will heat up your room. Once again some people (like typical doomsday predictors) said that you will end up sitting in a furnace.
  • Because of heat, you will end up using AC more often and further adding to the power bill.

I have been carefully monitoring my power consumption since the day the plasma TV was purchased and installed. The TV usage started from 25-July-2012. The power usage pattern has been very revealing. But here is an actual download from the MAHADISCOM website (power distribution company in MH state):

A careful analysis shows the following:
  • The 50" plasma TV replaced the 21" CRT.
  • Power consumption has more or less remained the same during the same period over the last year; actually, in fact it reduced a little by some 20 units.
  • While the TV does generate some heat, it is not enough to cook rice. Heat (lukewarm) is felt only when standing 6" close to the TV.
  • During the last five months or so, there was not a single day when AC was required. It will be required in Summer but for entirely different reason.
So much for the "high power usage" and "not going green" outcry.

FEAR
False Evidence Appearing Real

Mostl fm members are using plasma for games etc which is causing burning or IR ,some are not using the stabilizer/surge protection, if not special care at-least normal care Plasma is ideal according to me.

Hey, how come you've got such low power consumption overall? I've never been able to go below 300 unit mark

Very simple. I have completely transitioned to gas-fired geyser. This move alone knocked off 300 units off my bill. Electric geysers or electric storage water heaters consume 2 units per bucket of hot water.

The only time, I run into high usage is in Summer when AC is operating. In Pune, AC is required from Mar-15 to Jun-15.

I guess I need to do a similar switch. Geysers all put together draw approx 20A

I had one storage heater (Racold 35 L, 2200W) and one instant geyser (1L, 2000W). Mostly one used to be operating (the storage heater) and with 5 persons in home, it used to be ON at least 3 hours everyday. Now there are 4 persons (father passed away a year and half ago).

There is a new issue about only 6 subsidized LPG cylinders next year onwards. But a cyclinder lasts nearly 3+ months in summer and 1.5 months in peak winter. Even at Rs. 900 per cylinder, the gas remains economical.

I'm searching for renewable energy options too. Solar based steam generating plants are on my list. They claim to give ROI within a year. The extra steam generated which is not used for cooking will heat water and deliver at 60deg for bathing, cleaning vessels etc. Thermax has got some pretty good products, need to check the initial investment. [There is also some sort of Govt. subisdy @30% on such installations]

Okay, so my ST50 has been working nice since I got it in August.
It took a couple of months for the showroom to get me my free HT system (Panasonic SC-XH170).
I installed it myself and it worked fine (used ARC to get sound from the TV to the HT) - suddenly from yesterday onwards I get no sound from the TV -> HT via ARC.
The HT works fine playing DVDs, Radio etc, just sound from the TV to HT doesn't seem to be working - any of you faced anything similar?

Possible issue with HDMI cable. Try changing the cable. Don't buy a new one - borrow from a friend. You will need HDMI v1.4 cable.
