The 2013 LED TV discussion thread

Hi I am new in this forum and is planning to purchase a new 32" LED TV. My budget is Rs 34,000/- and my requirements are 32" Edge LED with 1080p resolution, Smart TV feature in not necessary. 3D is not required. After doing a survey in market, I have shortlisted two 32" TVs, Samsung and panasonic.
Both are Edge LED with 1080p resolution. Samsung 32F5100 is being offered to me for Rs 34,200/- while Panasonic TH-L32E5D (Black Bezel color) is being offered for Rs 32,000/-.

Samsung 32" 32F5100
Pros;
-Recently launched model
-Brilliant picture quality & contrast
-Protection from voltage fluctuations, so no need to buy separate stabilizer
-Very thin clear black Bezel, so better look.
-Hyper-reality engine (I dont know how much difference it makes)
-Samsung is a fast moving brand, almost all of the showroom salesmen
recommended Samsung.
Cons;
-VA pannel. So less sturdy as compared to IPS Alpha panel of Panasonic.
(There is no possibility of physical damage of screen due to tapping by kids
etc in my case).
-The viewing angles are not great. The picture quality and colors distort if
seen from sideways.
-Only 1 year warranty as compared to 3 yr warranty of PanasonicTH-L32E5D
-MRP is Rs 36,900/- and I am getting a discount of Rs 2,700/- only. May be
it is a newly launched model, so very less discount at present.

Panasonic 32" TH-L32E5D (Black Bezel Color)
Pros;
-Alpha IPS pannel. It has more natural colors, wide viewing angles, more
sturdy than VA pannel of Samsung.
-Plays almost all video formats on USB drive just like Samsung. I checked it
myself in showroom.
-3 year Manufacturer warranty. This is very significant since I will be paying
approximately Rs 35,000/- for any of this TV.
-MRP is 46,000 and Panasonic Dealer is offering me for 32,000. Then i have
to buy a stabilizer costing Rs 2,400/- separately (no need of stabilizer for
Samsung as it contains in-built protection against voltage surge). So total
cost of Panasonic comes to Rs 34,400/-
-This TV is smart TV. So connectivity is better in terms of HDMI ports etc.
However I dont need the internet function etc in my TV. So that is
additional benefit and should not influence my decision.
Cons;
-This model (black color) has been launched 1 yr back and one of the
Panasonic Showroom salesman told me that Panasonic has discontinued this
particular model with black color hereafter. Instead Panasonic has launched
white color model with 1,000/- extra. So I am confused whether to buy an
year old model with no future production even though company is offering 3
year warranty.
-Although colors appear natural and viewing angle is great, picture is not as
bright as Samsung F5100 when I compared both in showroom. It was clearly
evident that the picture appeared more live and vibrant on Samsung.
(salesman told me that it is due to artificial colors of VA pannel in
Samsung).
-The Thickness of Bezel is double in panasonic as compared to Samsung. So
appearance-wise samsung is the winner. Also the Bezel color of panasonic
is dull black while that of samsung is clear black. This adds to visual appeal
of samsung.
-No voltage stabilizer in this TV. So i have to purchase it separately.
-I dont know how panasonic's performance is in LED TV with IPS pannels.
-One of the salesman told me that Refresh Rate of panasonic is only 50 Hz
while that of Samsung is 100 Hz. So fast moving scenes will appear blurred
in Panasonic while not in Samsung. I checked on Samsung website. They
have mentioned that this particular TV has clear motion rate as 100 Hz
which is not exactly same as Refresh rate.

So now I am confused which one to buy.
What all of you recommend???

Your homework is laudable. If viewing angles is a criteria then you should try out panny. But one thing is that aesthetics is an important component in the overall satisfaction from tv buying.
Samsung can deliver that element in abundance.
But if you can convince your family members and friends that your purchase was backed by Picture considerations like viewing angle etc then you can buy the tv of your choice.
Don't go by the jargon like clear panel etc etc. Nobody understands the refresh rate aspects clearly. We have seen some tvs from reputed brands with sky high refresh rates but still faltering on motion.

Did you see the motion blurring on panny with your eyes or is it just a speculation?

Thanks for your reply.
Regarding refresh rate. I couldnt observe anything like blurring while watching fast moving pictures. May be I didnt test it during my showroom visit. This particular point is not a very important for me.
My main point of confusion is the difference in warranty period (1yr in samsung F5100 Vs 3 yr in Panasonic Th-L32E5D). Is this difference really significant? Shall it influence my decision? If not, then I will buy Samsung. If yes, then I will buy panasonic.
And How is panasonic's performance in LED TVs of 32"?
Thanks.

As regards to Samsung and VA panel having artificial colours ... The salesman wants to make a sale. He will closely look at your choice and lean towards any particular model. Then he will say anything that further consolidates your views. I am not saying that Samsung is better or Panasonic is better. But I have reasons to believe that VA panel is better than IPS panel in its capability to produce better picture with better contrast. But you should go with what you like best on a twin shootout.

Yes. A twin shootout is the right way to go. But since you have already done that and did not find a difference you can opt for the panny.
I am saying this because you seem to be serious about the warranty. Panny is not going to close its led tv business in India. That's for sure.
Btw usually leds may not have much issues regarding panel life. But since its a ips panel which I do not know much about, a 3 year warranty is very assuring.

Doesn't all TVs run on DC, the adapter converts any voltage from 110-220v to DC and sends back to TV. So voltage fluctuation won't affect the TV right? Believing so, I have connected my 47" directly to power source.

That is true. But voltage fluctuation can harm the AC-DC converter. Spikes can damage the internal circuits as well because the transformer inside is not an isolation type.

However, if your area receives power with reasonable stability, less fluctuation, you can connect TV directly to mains.

 Are you hacking the Indian Port Trust web site? Ha! Ha!

As per TOI Mumbai edition of yesterday, India is the 4th biggest market for Sony as of last year, after US, China & Japan and is contributing a revenue of Rs 8000 Cr. They are going to give more priority to India now with better products at affordable prices to keep this momentum going. The result of which can be seen nowadays, as they are now cheaper than equivalent Samy or LG models since last one or two years.

What-hifi gives a 5 star rating to the new 2013 Phillips flagship model Philips 55PFL8008:clapping:
It showers extraordinary praises on this set. The following is an excerpt.

Philips 55PFL8008: picture quality
Menu niggles aside, this TVs performance speaks for itself, delivering an image that projects detail and clarity in spades.

Its wonderfully sharp and does a great job of bringing out the subtler elements of a picture, with a colour palette that leans just slightly to the cooler side of neutral compared with the warmer tones of the LG 55LA860W or Samsung UE55F8000.

It demonstrates a seriously strong grip on contrast too, capable of delivering a very bright image while still showing off impressively inky blacks and plenty of shadow detail that competitors such as the Sony KDL-55W905A and the Samsung F8000 lose completely to darkness.

Philipss 1400Hz Perfect Motion Rate processing technology works well at keeping movement smooth and natural, and we witnessed a very stable performance, even during the busy, fast-moving opening shots in Hugo.

I have used Philips 32PFL6577 and i must tell u it is lakh times better than samsung, sony or panasonic. It gives awesome picture quality with great blacks plus contrast ratio, great audio quality (i did not even need any external speaker, audio is that good).
Plays all formats, has awesome colors in the picture

When I saw Philips in Finland last month, I was very happy with the picture quality. However, I did not have time to play around and did not note the model numbers. :(

Im using philips 32 inch 6357 led.The PQ and black levels are very good. The new series looks better than that. The specs are impressive. With little color adjustment one can get very good pq for both Hd and Sd.The colors are natural.
