The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Hmm, so have been in the market for a while now for a 55" tv. Whatever I've seen so far (LCDs) have frankly, not really impressed me in the PQ department. Want to check out some Plasmas now. The only real concern I have is the power consumption - even the LCD power consumption of 150W is somewhat distressing for me (quite conscious in this department).

In the 64" spec, the Sammy F8500 has been measured at a max of almost 600W in 3D mode. That makes me faint. The Panny's seem to be doing a much better job in this department at around 450W.

But Panasonic is exiting the business next year and the Smart TV features of Samsung are supposedly much better. And to top it off, the 51" F8500 is not here yet and nor is the ST60. Grrrrr....

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

I heard that panny is only stopping R&D in plasmas. It is quite obvious as they have reached the pinnacle of performance that a plasma can ever give.
They may continue to manufacture their 2013 reference plasmas.
The gt/vt/zt series are already being considered as reference grade plasmas.
And I think they will continue to be for the years to come. This could be something like the story of the kuros.
If the demand for the plasmas falls considerably they may exit the market.
I am thinking that they may continue to manufacture for another 4 to 5 years atleast.

Had to do hard bargaining with my local dealer to get it at that price...However it has still not been delivered...Also I never did a demo of this model...so keeping my fingers crossed :)

Finally got my Samsung P51F5500 delivered yesterday. The salesman informed that mine was the first model delivered in Kolkata. They honored the agreed price of 65k with two additional 3D glasses. So far I played a little with the TV and I am truly impressed. Was a bit skeptical about buying a Plasma due to reflections but in my moderately lit room its hardly an issue once we pull down the curtains. Currently have all the picture settings below 50 but it still looks very good in a dark room watching blu-ray movies. Wall mounting should be done today and Tata-Sky HD installation is also due for later today. Will provide more updates once everything is setup and the screen is properly calibrated. And BTW the sound from this TV is pretty decent although I will be using a home-theater system.

Congratulations.
Please tell how it is performing with youtube videos when it is directly connected to internet. Thanks.

Accessing the TV's Smart features is very fast. I guess the dual core processor helps a lot in this regard. I connected via wi-fi and played few Youtube videos.
The SD ones play perfectly however the HD videos buffers a lot. Maybe because of my crappy BSNL internet. Will try the ethernet connection instead of wi-fi tomorrow to see if there is any improvement. Also played some 3D videos and it is very good (as good as my 47" Passive LG LED TV if not better). The glasses are extremely light. However I did not use them for a lengthy period so cannot comment on their overall effects.

Congrats on your buy , Kudoss !!!

Now we have someone to put across the some real feedback .. :-) .

Please let us know about .. 3D contrast review - comparing to LEDs
Input lag - from PS3 or some other console ( If possible ) .
Reflection - will be bear some light in room or not at all .
Picture quality -- :-) ..

I might be asking many things :-) , congrats again and njoy with your family ...

Panny is going to produce plasmas at least into next year. That's not a great reassurance.

Just called up the Jayanagar Panny folks and they say that the ST60 WON'T be coming. The S60 also, is available only in 50". They have no news from company whether the 65" will ever be coming. 82k after discount.

I want something around 55" or bigger. The Sammy 64" is over budget unless it becomes available at around 1.5L

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

1.85L in store with bill and warranty. Can be negotiated further if more join in.

Prices should go down further, 64" is already being sold for $2700ish in States.. and think will go down further.. So lets hope it comes down in India too :P along with 51" model launch -___-

After long wait for Panny 2013 Plasmas, I have ordered P42UT50D at Rs. 56000 with three years warranty and 5 3d glasses. Will be installed within a week. The forum members really helped me in deciding the TV but was waiting for Panny 2013 plasmas but there will not be any 42 inch model I opted for UT50.

Thanks a lot guys.

Although this is a discussion thread on the 2103 models, I wish to share my intent and seek some practical advice.

1. Have shortlisted the Panasonic TH-P42UT50D and the TH-P42ST50D from the list of models available in the Panasonic India website
2. I have chosen the size of 42 inches because the perpendicular viewing distance will not be greater than 10 feet and might be as low as 8 feet
3. Both the models shortlisted were not available for demo in the brandshop that I visited in Bombay today; I was informed that they will be available in a week or so
4. I was also informed that these classifications - UT, ST will be phased out for the 2013 model year and that the 2013 models have been launched and will reach the showrooms soon; I got the impression of 3-4 weeks

A. This tv will be used for viewing tv channels primarily, and almost completely in the evenings

B. Sound quality will be an important consideration with woofer quality being important

C. Hooking up to a laptop for pics/videos will be required - will an HDMI port come into play?

All advice for aid in the buying decision welcome!

The tv to be replaced is a venerable 19 year old Onida KY Series with the G Horn!

8 feet is good enough for 50" TV. If you have the budget, then go for it.

Panasonic is supposed to annouce something this week (more precisely on 22nd). So, stay tuned.
Also, check with brandshop at Ghatkopar. That guy is notoriously known for getting stocks, but charges around 20-25% premium. He had 50GT50 a a few weeks ago.

Panasonic/ Samsung/ Sony/ LG are all ruled out, unless you are ready to spend extra for the sound setup. But watching regular TV should be fine.

C. Hooking up to a laptop for pics/videos will be required - will an HDMI port come into play?
All TV's around 50K and above will have an HDMI port. You will need two of them - one for the set top box (HD) input and one for your laptop HDMI connection.

>>> Will have to keep this in mind, thank you. If the laptop doesn't have an HDMI port, which port can be used - i. VGA, ii.'display port'?

I got a call from Panasonic Today regarding one some problem i had. So when the topic of the 2013 Plasmas came up, he told me that they will only be launching 55 inches and above models in india, and nothing below that.
Can that be true??

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
