The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

These are of the 64F8500. This website has really stingy image restrictions, so the quality and dimensions are a bit skewed.

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

The final image indicates the prowess of the samsung plasma. Very juicy.
The last image has the juicy colours of the plasma coupled with the brightness of an led.
If we look at the background of the image we see a perfect gradation of brightness and darkness between the trees, with sunlight.
Though I am yet to see the f8500 in action, I am convinced that this tv could be stunning.

@ nm_plasma_fan: Very nice pictures, though I think your camera lens is not clean.

It is very strange that I cannot find any import entry of this model on the imports website.
Is this TV manufactured locally by any chance?

I think NM has already indicated somewhere that this TV is mfd in India.

NM - thanx for the images. Congrats for the TV. Do feed us with more feedback on the same.

if you are interested in 51F5500 give this a read.

So I went to our local AV store today (as opposed to Best Buy) . I asked how their TVs were calibrated and they weren't. All out of the box set up save for contrast being pumped up for store display and things like that. Saw the F5500 and ST60 side by side, both 60 inch. To me the F5500 looked more vibrant and brighter whereas the ST60 looked a little...I don't want to say dull but not as lively. Their set up is nice because the tvs aren't stacked like at Best Buy. All individual TVs in a row. However, the 55 inch as opposed to the 60 looked amazing. So I know this "comparison" is not indicative of real world results. I also know that you can't properly demo in a store anyways. I ended up buying the F5500, It was 1197 as opposed to 1498 and the ST60 is on back order. Blacks looked good and the detail was rich. I didn't notice any screen door in my brief demo of it but then again, I never heard of it until recently and may not have noticed it even if it was there.

As far as apps go, the Samsung seemed to impress more than the Panasonic and there were some pretty neat features with the bluetooth remote. I won't get the TV until Friday but honestly, I may exchange it for the Panasonic. I was blown away by the 55 inch and I imagine the ST60, properly calibrated will look awesome. That isn't to say the Samsung isn't good but I did notice more glare on it and the screen door effect posted earlier scares me away. I definitely loved it's app interface and the apps available and it offered great PQ. I don't know how to properly compare blacks (I imagine it isn't rocket science) but from my limited time with both, the F5500s black levels held up reasonably well with the ST60.

For 3D, I didn't test the Panasonic but over at CNET they remarked how the 3D was susceptible to cross-talk and not as good a performer as some competitors. Wish they reviewed the F5500 so I knew if they tested that. Of course, CNET isn't the be all, end all of review outlets either.

As a side note: The salesman even said he'd recommend the ST60 if I wasn't on much of a budget but given my price point the Samsung is a fine TV and outshines the Panasonic with apps. Whether this is true or not, at least I felt like he was just selling a product and not a specific one if that makes sense. I'm sure he knew he could get the ST60 sale if he really tried.

Yeah you're absolutely right with everything you said. I went back to the store today intent on changing my order but then I played with both tvs, checked out the 3D on both, changed settings (couldn't do all this before with my 2 year old there.) I was just as lost as before. Some more observations:

Pro Samsung:

Samsung wins in the UI department, hands down.
Colours were also a little more vibrant even after some basic tinkering on the Panasonic....And this was compared to a VT60, not the ST.
There was a scene in the demo video that showed a bird with some short depth of field and you could see a very blurred leaf outline. On the Samsung it was very noticeable and green. On the Panasonic, you could barely tell it was there. Again, I'm sure some tinkering would change this.
Seemed brither than the Panasonic. The Panasonic at times just looked too dim.

Pro Panasonic:

Blacks were amazing. They were good on the Samsung but even better on the Panasonic. This was evident in a deep sea scene.
In that same scene, the Samsung seemed to have more traces of yellow on screen which kind of bothered me.
Whites, especially in darker areas, really stood out. Again, they looked good on the Samsung but just a tad better on the Panasonic.

3D looked great on the Panasonic (tested it on a 55 inch ST60, not the VT) and that was using the standard settings save for a vivid picture mode. Can't recall any difference between that and the Samsung but then again, I tested that on Tuesday and only for a couple of minutes.

Thankfully I was able to get free delivery on the TV and the sales associate at Video Only told me that if I do want to exchange the Samsung, they'll come out with the ST60 when it's in stock, drop it off and set it up and pick up the Samsung free of charge. When he told me that it made my decision much clearer. I'll still get the Samsung delivered tomorrow, play with it for a few days and go from there.

Do I see anything justifying a 300 dollar price difference? Well...Depends how much your blacks mean to you. I definitely didn't see much grey on the Samsung. Blacked look black. Just not the nice deep black of it's big brother, the 8500. (Which was an entirely different kind of sexy but also out of my budget. Sidenote: Have you guys seen the base for the 8500? It is damn nice looking.)

Not sure if this gives any new info to those out there wanting comparisons but until the reviews start coming in for the F5500 it will have to do :P .

The issues you mention are not real issues.

Heating: Plasma will produce more heat definitely. This was my first summer with a plasma (ST50) in the bedroom. The room definitely becomes warm and stuffy. But with the AC on, that is not a problem. Even without the plasma running, the AC is required. So I won't say that we had to turn on the AC to combat the plasma heat. In the days gone by (last monsoon and winter), we never felt much discomfort. If we stand 1 foot up close, then you can feel the warmth from the panel. But not otherwise. All in all, a plasma is not going to convert your room to an oven.

IR/Burn-in: Burn-in is permanent etching of image to the panel. This simply does not happen unless the plasma TV is really abused. By 'abuse', I mean, displaying a complete static image continuously for days (like it happens on airport displays). IR or Image Retention is temporary and can be a slight issue. But if proper care is taken, this can be avoided completely. Please read my blog post: Prevent Image Retention and Burn-in. IR, if and when it occurs, may alarm you initially but it always goes away. Read the thread and you will understand. I have never felt the issue in my 11 months of ownership.

Thanks @just4kix for detailed replies.I will surely go through the links you provided. Thanks again.I'm having samsung 32b530 in my mother's place purchased three years ago.It broken exactly after warranty.3k to update firmware and panel repariing cost as samsung service told. After that no problems what soever. I din't tested any of tvs in showroom yet.My journey of tv searching started with sony40HX850,samsung 40f6400,sony42800a and now comparing 40f5500 and plasma 51f5500 (rate is good for the size).I'm still open to other suggestions also.PQ is the most imp.(price is also imp). All others are secondary only.Thanks.

1.85 lakhs. Best value for money in the large size category. I doubt any other TV will be that good. I wish the 51" was also available.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
