The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Been watching my 50" tv from a distance of around 6 feet since past 3 years, now it looks like a small TV, i think personally i would watch a 64" from 10 feet or less because that was the more or less the distance i used to watch 60" kuro.

Khan, been 3-4 weeks with the 64f8500. I am at 10 ft. Upgraded from a 10 yr. old Sony 42 inch Plasma.

It is brilliant. First day or two it felt slightly big. Now it's wall mounted and just looks great. SD content is upconverted.

With the wall mount I've also got good quality hdmi and component cables and its looking better every day.

Money is the main concern, if you can afford it, 64 at 14 is perfect!

Any ideas about extended warranty on samsung's. I got a ridiculous quote from one of the samsung service centers. Is there a way to bargain hunt this? Do they negotiate? Can they only be had from samsung, or are there thre party providers?

I am graduating from a 29 inch Onida CRT. :ohyeah:

>>>

My mater uses a 19 year old 21 inch Onida KY Series which she says beats the daylights out of my 13 year old 29 inch Phillips Matchline!:D

Its another matter that I am satisfied by my Phillips.

Hi Guys,

Just visited the store to place my order for 64F8500,, the best quote I have been able to get is 1.84 lakh

Unfortunately it seems there is no stock with Samsung, the earliest they can deliver is 15 days from now. Hoping I will get it soon.

After placing the order and coming back home, realized that I had wrongly calculated the viewing distance.. It is 11 feet and not 14 feet as I thought earlier..

But like nm_Plasmafan said, 11 feet shouldn't really be an issue... Keeping fingers crossed and hoping that I will like how it looks from 11 feet away :)

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

Congratulation in order.

I'll be watching 64" from 12ft. It's gonna be awesomeness exaggerated.

Can't wait to place my order.

Update: Brandshops in Pune expected to get 50ST60 by Wednesday/ Thursday.

MRP: 1.29 lacs. DP: 1.20 lacs.

Yes. Expensive compared to last year.

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

That's expensive. Only if 51F8500 was available.

Very true,,, if 51F8500 was available in India, then no one would have bought ST60 at that price...

But unfortunately with no smaller sizes from F8500... i guess lot of guys who can't afford the 64F8500 or have smaller rooms will end up going for 50ST60

^Also, there is still no news about higher models like GT60 and VT60 for India.

In that scenario, a price correction from Panasonic is our best hope to buy these TV's.

BTW: Are these TV's available in Singapore/ Hongkong or other places in SE Asia?

At 1.29 lacs MRP, it will be a market dud. Hope Pana corrects it sooner than later. Their entire marketing team looks like a bunch of stupid. They don't know when to launch, how much to sell, how to price.. etc etc.. Last year they introduced LEDs at a price higher than Sony !!! Now the same model is being sold at about 33-40% discount after 6/7 months.

Hope better sense prevails and they market it at around 1 lac very soon.

Even Samsung is proving to be pretty stupid. Come to think of it if their flagship 51F8500 were to release here at a competitive price, panasonic plasma would be finished.

At the moment the strategy is to focus on home appliances. So TV's are not in their top list. They know that they don't have a big market share there and it is an uphill task for them - so focus is on the low hanging fruits.

I expect washing machines and air conditioners to grab a bigger market share in future.

The phones that they are planning to launch this year is another key focus area. There is a risk that they are going to suffer badly in that segment as well, since the phones are expensive.

We have to see what are the big wins for Panasonic this year.

Electronic is a highly dynamic market.. so far the only one which have bucked the trend is Apple, who has manged exclusivity to their products thus by enjoying a huge brand image and with that a huge margin on whatever they sells. Apart from that, there is no other brand that has any exclusivity value. So if you want to succeed, there is no point deserting one category, where you are among top 4/5 brands and getting into newer category like handsets, where even players like Sony is finding to get a good enough hold. Samsung is too dynamic in all their product categories. They launches first, they gives features first, they are omni-present in almost all price point. They hardly takes time to adapt to market demand. That's why the visibility of Samy is very high and there is hardly anything within a category (where they are present), they are not offering. They have offered the 64E8500 at the same price, they are offering at US!!! Others instead of trying to garner a larger market share, by offering better goods at a cheaper cost, are trying to figure out how they can stop the import of cheaper TV of their own brand. What stops others to have their own manufacturing facility in India and produce it cheap (someone has reported that 64F8500 is manufactured in India). There is sufficient demand for TVs for them to adopt such a strategy. But they goes for the easy way of importing and selling at a much higher margins. A TV sold at Bangkok stores for 50-60K is getting sold in India at 1 lac. Even with the logistics + import duty the same should have been available here at around 65-80K. But they choose extra high margin of 20-25K, thus making it extremely costly here.

Regarding Samy not introducing 51F8500, is unfortunate, but they are offering the slightly cheaper 51F5500, whose specs are closer to 51F8500. Hope they gets the 51F8500 as well for the enthusiasts at a price enviable to others.
