The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

CNET shows the same videos in its reviews of tvs. The bananas and the apples, the black dog sitting on the lawn and chasing a ball in water.
So it becomes easy for anybody to compare the sets then and there.
My observation w.r.t f8500 was that there is no color pop out and the picture was sharper and digital.
The vt60 has the color pop and an analogue picture smooth , serene and life like.
One can see this for themselves.

Question for Plasma owners:
How are you managing the effects of ambient light - either in daytime or night-time, on your Plasma. Does the PQ diminish significantly under some light? Is the difference noticeable?

Its well known that Plasma's produce stunning PQ and are usually better than LED's for motion as well WHEN used in dark or controlled lighting. However, except the nights when you are with your GF/Wifey and watching a movie in complete darkness, there will usually be some light in the room. Also, even with curtains there will be some sunlight during the day.

How does a Plasma perform in normal, practical home viewing which would not be 100% darkness most times? The content in my case will be movies - BD, DVD and Sports in HD. No Soaps and no 3D.

Much appreciated.

Vishal,

Plasma displays lose quite a bit of picture punch and pop if viewed in a moderately to well lit room. That's one of the biggest drawbacks of Plasma. Having said that the high end models have excellent reflective coat that soak up the light but note that they will still under perform compared to many LCD-LED.

Accepting the fact that Plasma can perform very well in dim to dark environments many say that it is suited only for movie aficionados. Well not true, you can own a LED and still be a movie lover.

It depends on your viewing conditions. My room is moderately lit at all times and turns in to a bat cave only when watching blurays on weekends. That said 64F8500 performs excellent under light and the best screen I have seen so far.

One biggest issue is of non availability of demo pieces by Panasonic (st60) or samsung. It appears they are not interested in selling plasma in India.

Thank you Shaiju. Your F8500 is arguably the best TV available in India today, not just the best Plasma. Certainly a neighbours envy and owners pride!

Your Plasma's performance is a reference though and most plasma would have inferior ambient light performance in comparison to it.

Does the moderately lit room affect your viewing pleasure?

Same here. Mine is also moderately lit room. Luckily I have no window facing or even close to my TV. There is a blank wall in the opposite direction. So for me it is a great setting to keep the plasma.

Yes as Shaiju said, the PQ diminishes as the lights goes up. But even than it can beat most of the LEDs anytime for better PQ. Yes it will not be able to give extreme artificial color and brightness of an LED at any calibration or setup. But with dimming light it is so beautiful PQ that it is a real treat to watch.

Today looked at the 51F5500 demo @ Noida samsung showroom. Screen is reflective indeed. But as I have a dedicated media room, only cove lights will be in use if required.
Able to find a store with one piece of 50ST60 but again the price is 1.19L whereas samsung is for 76k(not going below). The difference between two is around 43k, Which I think is just too much. Thinking to buy 51f5500...may book it today or day after tomorrow...I hope i am making the right decision.

Push.. I can assure you that it is really great VFM TV and produces great enough PQ to satisfy you. Beyond this you need to be a videophile to figure out the differences, that too in the range of 1-5%. The price differential is too much for that. But if you can afford then definitely go for the higher model that costs upwards of 1 lac. I have been using for now almost 6 weeks and am extremely happy. The size is also perfect for me considering my apartment is big enough to accommodate something not more than 55". Only issue is reflection, which if you can contain then it is more than perfect. Yes another downer is the sound (it can be counted in the pathetic category). You can't even enjoy TV serials let alone movie with the sound output of the TV. I hope you'll be having a HT or speaker system to enhance the sound.

Regarding the price I think when you'll be actually paying I think you can negotiate just about 70 plus K atleast. Anyway you'll get a free extended warranty for one more year. So welcome to the gang.:clapping:

...

I own a Panasonic Viera G10 since 2009. My room has mild natural lighting during day time with a balcony next to TV which is south facing. The doors have bamboo curtains which helps to control the light during Winter Solstice. TV has pretty good brightness levels for day time with very good PQ and is brilliant during evenings and night. Watching HD channels on it is pure bliss, especially in darker settings. For SD channels, I did not notice much of an impact.

Hi All.

I am really confused b/w Panasonic 50ST60 & Samsung 51F5500. Request you to suggest me the best one.

Usage: Mostly will be watching Downloaded BR Rip Movies (4 - 10 GB). Little bit of English Serials.

I'm a hard core fan of Panasonic Products. But i'm worried whether to go ahead in purchasing the Plasma TV's from them at this moment. As they have decided to stop R&D and as well as Production of Plasma TV's.

For Samsung, i never heard that much of positive reviews regarding the Plasma TV's and also they offer only 1yr warranty, which is a bit let down for me.

And also Pls provide the best price offered for the mentioned products in Hyd

R else can anyone suggest me good TV in the 50" without 3D & Smart TV functions

I hope i'm posting my query at the right place.

go for the samsung ps51f5500...according to experts the picture of 50st60 is very much noisy because of extreme dithering noise....since you have already used panasonic plasma it is better to go for a different brand like the samsung so that you will get a complete different viewing experience...st60 may be having better blacks but clarity and colours samsung is the winner....here check out this review

Samsung PN51F5500 Review (PN51F5500AF, PN51F5500AFXZA) - 51 Inch 1080p Plasma TV Active 3D Smart TV

demo both the sets and choose the best tv which looks good to your eyes...

Samsung has extended warranty offer till 25th aug. currently. So jump in quickly as you may not get another chance.

@Zouresh: Thnx for the reply. I have tried to demo both of them at one place. But i couldn't find any store in hyd, where they could provide the demo of both the products side by side. In the link attached by you, there is a Long life reliabilty problem in the Samsung model. Don't you think that, this problem will affect me in the long run by higher Operating costs.

@Dhanan: Could u pls tell me, of how many yrs extended warranty is provided, and at wat cost?

i cannot find 50ST60 here in Bangalore.. Not sure why the model is out of stock now.

Pls let me know if its available anywhere in bangalore..

Last time when i checked banshankari brand-showroom quoted 1.13k..

even if you demo the two tvs at two different places you can still find the difference....take your pendrive and watch the same song or movie on both the tvs ....whichever picture you like the most choose that tv....forget about reviews...just trust your eyes....

@Zouresh: I tried to demo the Samsung and Panasonic models at their respective Brand shops. To my surprise, Panasonic Brand shops do not have any latest Plasma models with them. They have mentioned that they are not getting any new models from their H.O.

Samsung Brand shops too do not have the Demo piece. They have mentioned that, If i own the piece, they can bring that particular model or else not.

Dude, do u know where i can have demo of these two models in Hyd.

You can watch Samsung 5500 in Sonovision, Somajuguada. They don't have Panasonic 50" there but have 65" (modelNo-???) . Samsung 5500 is Ok but I felt lot of glaring and light reflection.I am also looking for Panasonic Plasma50" basic model with 1080P. They promised to get it (P50ST60D) on order. Please post the prices they offer after the visit. You can bargain for 2 pieces (one for me). You can contact the sales guy Mr. Khaja Khan -9676103827
