The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Just called another guy and he assured me that ST60 will be coming along with other plasma models in next few days (Dec 2-3) for replacements. I told him what you said and he said that those are sales units and these are replacement units. They've 4 replacement requests (including mine) for ST60 and company are bound to provide those first before they provide for sales. So Brandshop might refund the amount but if you've requested for replacement, you'll definitely get your unit.

Great news, just keep a tab on it and follow up so within a week you will get to know the final status. Have a backup plan also ready if there is a delay and they push the dates further. Probably they can provide you a standby tv to watch till then.

TV is currently working fine, it's just the 3D. Now, I don't believe everything they say as they've been saying a lot of things for past couple of months. Then again, it's not their fault as plasma units are not available like the LEDs otherwise they always say about getting LED if it's urgent and they'll have one less thing to worry about :)

As for backup plan, I'll ask for refund and get Samsung E8000 if available.

Guys,
Now that my choice is down to the Samsung 51F5500 & Panasonic P50S60D, would really appreciate it if you guys could help me with what is the best deal for these.

From what I have read in your posts, around 69k with blu-ray player seems to be a good price for the Samsung F5500.

What would be a good price to negotiate for the Panasonic 50S60D?

Thanks a lot in anticipation!
:)

I would not compare both, as F5500 is in a different league you can't compare a Smart Tv to a regular one. Also if you were going for the ST series then it would have been better than f5500 but no stock of ST is available. So my vote will go for 51F5500.

Agreed. +1 to that. If you can't get ST60, 5500 is a better bet than S60. But do demo yourself and judge.

Both are good sets and it is difficult to judge between them.
Panasonic s60 does not have smart features like wifi with youtube app etc?

All panasonic plasma tvs are great sets , but what to do when tv dies, there will be no support, u will get refund (depreciated) and have to look another brand. So it is better to switch over to other brands which have good after sales support.Samsung has two excellent plasmas f8500 and f5500 .So one can for go for them according to their budgets.

I agree, good point as in warranty and post warranty service is something one needs to consider here and the odds are in favor of Samsung as Panasonic has exited plasma business in India. I do see on the forum few in warranty Panasonic plasma owners struggling to get their replacement sets.

Actually I was talking about PQ only. There are lot of people in this forum who are enjoying their panny. So only new buyers need to worry about it or everybody?
So in that case everybody should buy only LGs. After sales service is very good.
I am prepared to buy the last panny without worrying about " what if it goes caput and I will get depreciated rate (what about the joy derived , it should come free is it?)"...
Please dont press panic button about panasonic plasmas. There are lots of third party repairers coming up who can fix issues in flatpanels.

Yes, if they exit plasma business, 3rd party business would definitely grow. But the availability of parts and sourcing of parts is something which we would need to see. Also these days there is not much of repair work that happens, they change the entire board and do not get into component level repair. Same is for Panel. So guess parts availability and pricing would be the major driver here.

Panasonic TC-P50S60 & TH-P50S60, 2 different TVs!

Guys,
I just discovered something today when I demoed the Panasonic TH-P50S60D.

This Plasma has only a web-browser with NO built-in Apps. So, if one wants to watch Youtube, then we need to open it from the web-browser.

That would also be fine, but there is another issue. Youtube videos which need Adobe Flash player to run will NOT run on this TV, which means that very much most of the Youtube videos won't run.

Now this confused me, because I was dead sure that there are 6 Apps running on the 50S60D including Youtube as per the review I had read on CNET.

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-tc-p50s60/4505-6482_7-35558333.html

That's when I discovered that these are two different TVs!

The one reviewed on CNET which has Youtube loaded is the Panasonic TC-P50S60

And the one available in India is the Panasonic TH-P50S60 and this does NOT have any apps loaded and does NOT run youtube videos which need Adobe.

In fact the Panasonic TH-P50S60 doesn't even seem to be reviewed on CNET.

Guys, what is your take on this, have I missed out on anything?

Thanks!

sammy 5500 is a good tv but the s60 is slightly better having deeper blacks and well saturated colours....even the brightness is slightly better than the 5500....and SD is definitely better on the s60 than the sammy.....

Both models are different, specially when it comes to features. Yes you are right the US model has few apps like hulu & netflix and more internet options than the local model here. Also adobe issue is also confirmed as i specifically asked the panasonic guy and he said that flash or something is not there so you can not do much video viewing in the browser. In terms of smart features the indian model has less options when compared to US one.

I don't know wether you can flash the US firmware on the indian model and get those options which are missing out.

Samasung smart tv f5500 would not have such issues as you would have all the apps.

Yes Dushie, you are right! In fact I was extremely disappointed to know today that youtube almost won't run on the 50S60D we get in India.
I am looking forward to watching youtube on my new TV, come on, we don't really need a TV web browser to check gmail do we, what's the point if it can't run youtube!

This fact pulls me more towards Samsung F5500 now!

But today I also saw a demo of last year's Panasonic TH-P42GT50D and the picture is simply mindblowing!

So amazing was the picture that I am almost tempted to take the risk and go in for the Panasonic 42GT50D.

What are the pitfalls for the 42GT50D, warn me guys! :-)

I would not comment on the 42GT50D, as its an old model, whoever is selling probably clearing last years stocks. Its better to go for 50s60 and spend another 6k on a media player like WDTV or buy a blu ray player which can do both play disks and stream movies from usb port and netflix this will make your TV smart and you would not miss anything.

42 gt50 is a neo plasma panel of the panasonic much better than the non-neo plasma panel of the s60...go for it....you will not be disappointed....make sure it is not a display piece...and btw what was the price quote you got for the 42gt50.....

Yeah, the picture quality of the 42gt50 was amazing with the neo-plasma and higher level of gradations, that's what's tempting me.

Tho of course if there is a problem with it in warranty, Panasonic would almost 100% replace it with a low-grade LED.

Price was around 90k, is it good?

Thanks.

90k for a 42" tv, i would never go for it how good the PQ may be. It would be last years stock as it is not the current model. Please make sure you are not getting a demo piece also review the warranty on the set with the dealer and the company. As Panasonic is exiting the plasma business so what would be their stand on in warranty support would be good to know.

All the dealers here are just clearing stocks and some have even said that, they will not get any new plasma stocks.
