The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

Went to the Panasonic Store to make the final payment for the 42GT50D but the Store guy was still trying to tell me that maybe I should go in for the 50S60 instead.

Both are coming with 3 years warranty but his logic is that if something does go wrong with the S60 set, there is more chance of getting a S60 as replacement as it is a 2013 model, or to get at least a panel if not a full set.

But if something goes wrong with the 42GT50 which is a 2012 model, he says there is no chance of getting a replacement and I will have to take an LED as a replacement.

So he says why do u want to pay 10k more for a 42 inch leaving a 50 inch which is 10k lower and then take this risk of possibly being stuck with an LED too at a later date?

He says you are seeing the better Picture Quality of the GT here in the store as you can compare it with an S60 next to it but once u take the S60 home, you will find that to be very good too and love it!

Now this has once again made me put off my decision by 2 days, but gonna close it by sunday one way or the other now :-)

go for s60....it looks very good when you place it at home ....50 inch is always better than 42 inch for an awesome home theatre experience....go for it...

But that's for the whole India. The last time I talked to Panasonic BHI, he told me that they're making arrangement for refund if they don't receive shipment by next week.

That's good news, better start looking around for an alternative and negotiate on the pricing for the best deal. This way you will not waste much time to get a new set home.

Guys. I have a question.
Will the customs charges be on the bill amount of a TV or will it be on MRP of the TV. Or will there be another way of defining the value of a TV?

Customs will look at the price in India.
They have a list of prices, if they do not have the model they will apply the closest model's prices.

So if they do not have Panny VT60 they will apply ST60's price. They would not apply price of a different make however.

You can get a 60" VT 60 from US for around 90K, but ST60's price of 1.25L (or whatever) will be used for customs making the VT 60 expensive, close to 2L.
90K TV Cost + 25K for Shipping + 40K for duty = nearly 1.6L.

Thanks for your response. But the guy who is trying to provide shipping services to me is not ready to budge below 1200$ for getting the 60 inch 119lb tv.

Are you getting international warranty?? On panasonic model

Panasonic does not have any international warranty on TV. i did mention it n my post somewhere else also. Getting TV from US is a big risk as it can get damaged during shipping. Second if it is a DOA then you have a lemon. Can't ship it back and no repair here in India. If all goes well and later on there is some issue with the TV, Panasonic india won't touch it as they would not have the spares or parts.

My brand new 64F8500 turned out to be DOA and had few issues. Prior to that couple of folks from extended warranty called and first thing they asked is if it has been purchased locally or abroad.

So if you have the ability to take a risk in buying and getting a TV shipped from US go ahead. Personally i would not go that route specially with the experience i have had in buying 2 lakh equipment locally. You never know what you will get when you open the box, it's like lottery at times.

I'm not sure how they charge for duties. Sometime they charge you as invoiced and sometime as per local price. I've experience about those.

Import duties are calculated on <price of the item> + <shipping & insurance>

Say, the price of the item is 10,000/- and shipping + insurance is 2,000/- so import duties will be charged on 12,000/- which will come to approx. 3,600/- (duties on electornics is like 30% or so).

Yes, TV shipping is expensive. I do not know how it even works.

Regular Air Cargo is better. There will be risk but cost is much lower.
From US it should not be more than $500.

At $1200 it is not worth importing unless you are getting a good deal on OLED or some high end 4K TV.

ST60s and VT60s are getting clearanced out everywhere, it might not be good idea to import them.

Yes man. After your case I am really worried about DOA.
But it seems every zt60 carries the signature of the engineer who tested it.

LG 42PN4500 review

I recently got a 42 inch LG plasma for my living room. My considerations were

1. Budged - 40K
2. Major Use - Soaps and Movies :D
3. Resolution - 720p atleast
4. No smart TV required

I was planning on a 32 inch full HD LED TV when I came across LG/Samsung plasma panels. My god ! The picture quality just blew me away and at that price !! It was unbelievable:):). After some research I ended up buying the LG model.

TV Features:
1. 1024x768 Resolution
2. 600 Hz refresh rate
3. 3,000,000:1 Contrast ratio
4. No smart tv features

User experience:

Picture quality is stunning given the price I paid. I compared this model with 80K models in showroom side by side and picture quality in both were the same. SD content from DTH looks good since the resolution is only 720 and no pixelation at a viewing distance of 10 feet. 720p content especially movies look awesome. :clapping::clapping:

Sound is not that great:sad::sad:. You might need extra speakers with good bass. Connectivity options are also limited. Only 1 HDMI and USB port. No PC (15 Pin VGA Port).

All in all, I'm happy :yahoo::yahoo:

Guys, I finally closed this last sunday on the 8th and like Zouresh said above, the better home theatre experience of the 50 inch over the 42 inch made me go for the S60 finally!
(No doubt though, that if I had got the GT in 50 inches I would have paid more and got it, what PQ it had! :-)

Brought the S60 home last sunday itself but was out of station after that so finally got it installed today and enjoying it!

Thanks for all the inputs and advice guys :-)
