The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread!

Panasonic called me today and told me that I can get that 50DT60D for 1.28L as replacement for the 42XT50D (I've the pay the difference). Panasonic Brandshop quoted me 1.07L for the same. What the hell ?

This would be the future for all current Panasonic plasma users ... they can take a learning from your current situation. As they would not be able to repair or offer Plasmas as replacement. So they would push towards LCD's.

A small review after 15 days with s60:
For 1st one or two days I did not blown away by PQ of my tv. I ran dnice slide for around 100 hours. then I applied fairechild's setting in true cinema mode. It is bit darker, but I am experiencing PQ improvement day by day for last few days. Now I am really loving my TV. I have watched LOR trilogy, hobbits, MOS, tangled etc...in 1080p Bdrip and just blown away with PQ. color are not overly saturated like samsung or bluish like sony(I liked sony PQ better than samsung). They are just natural and wow. Black is beautiful. There is one scene in tangled where Rapunzel singing in black BG, it looked awesome. In display floor of stores I have noticed some smudge effect in faces in Led TV, In s60 I did not found any and I am glad. I can easily see even a single hair. My viewing distance is around 9-10 feet.
now some down factor. I can see some noise in display from 2-3 feet. I googled it and found that those actually improve the shadow detail in picture. My tv is now aged 135 hours, when I turned off the tv I notice image of black bar for few second in display.

Overall for now I am really satisfied with my blind folded purchase. I can never find a TV of 50" with such PQ in Rs.70000.

For now I don't have d2h connection with Tv, so I can't comment about SD picture quality. But what I have noticed in our 22" sony with videocon D2H, if you watch HD regularly, I will feel disgust to watch SD channel.

Another thing to mention, initially I was feeling 50" is really big, Now its looking normal. :)
My present viewing distance is 10 feet, My actual viewing distance will be 11-12 feet after construction of my bedroom. Now I am feeling that it will look small When I move my TV to 1st floor. :D

Thanks a lot for the review, Soum. Really good to hear that you're enjoying your TV. After 250 hrs, you'll enjoy more, that I can say. Don't worry about the noise, it's common in every plasma, it's the phosphor which is visible when you watch closely. I'm sure the TV will look smaller when you watch from 11-12' distance still 50" is pretty big. But if you think the size is shrinking day by day, welcome to HFV :) Everyone here is thinking the same, their TVs are shrinking in size day by day and thus upgrading to 55-64-65" :)

Was at CES last week, saw one plasma (ZT series) in the Panasonic booth, which was there to show that their new LCD displays look as good as their plasmas (which they didn't).

LG as usual had the best booth and announced some new plasmas. Samsung said they are continuing with plasmas, just not making any announcements at CES (make of that what you will).

Samsung: We'll have new plasmas, just not at CES 2014 | CES 2014: Televisions - CNET Blogs

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

Studio master drive from panny appears to be something to look for in an otherwise lackluster 2014.
I thought that Samsung would attempt a final star plasma going beyond f8500 and then finally say goodbye.
But it appears that it is not pushing f8500 further, and is just giving up on plasma enhancements.

This is one of the reasons i feel, folks who still want to own a plasma still have some time left and can go for the current models that are there in the market. Tomorrow you may not get a better option than these. Just the way it happened for the Kuro's.

Very much true,, now i feel my 55 is looking small, after watching my friends 60S60.

Just 5inch bigger than mine,, but 60S is looking very big to me.

Bad news for people waiting for a F8500 successor. Looks like it is end of road for any plasma innovation. Even if new plasma variants are introduced, those will be apparently stripped down versions of the F8500.

LG plasmas suck and it is irrelevant if they make or stop making plasmas.

RIP plasma. Wait for OLED begins. I am sceptical that, for the 64" OLEDs to become any affordable close to the vacuum which the plasmas left, it will be another good 10 years. Good enough reason for investing in a 64F8500 now?

A valid point. But though the innovation has stopped, atleast there will be more affordable and scaled down models available from Samsung, unlike the sudden death of panny plasmas.

I feel, if you want to go for the F8500 this is the best time, as most of the places are still selling the Flagship model and it is in stock. Once stocks are over and if they launch scaled down models of this or only lower end models then you may not get the best plasma in the market. Better to buy the flagship model right now itself. I still remember the huge rush for Kuro once the product stopped and it was announced they would not be selling anymore.

So it's the same for the current plasma Flagship models currently in the market.

Re: The 2013 Plasma Discussion Thread! [Updated with Information]

4k and over enthusiasm of oled offtake killed plasma.
Now let us see how much does 4k offtake would be..
I am guessing that the way big led tv manufacturers would do is to have all their high end models to be by default 4k.
This way they would not leave a choice to the consumers. And then people will crave for 4k content rips...
4k revolution forcefully started....
