Goodbye Bafana [2007][Bluray]

Goodbye Bafana (2007) - IMDb

A very good History/Drama movie. A true story, based on the biography written by James Gregory, who server as the prison guard for Nelson Mandela for more than 20yrs. Very strong performance by Joseph Fiennes as James Gregory. Good story.

cheers.

Casino Jack (2010)

The Shouting Men (2010)

Something different & English
Lowly Gillingham Football Club are drawn against Premiership giants Newcastle United in the quarter finals of the FA Cup. A small group of 'Gills' fans decide to make the most of their 'game of a lifetime' by turning the journey north into a weekend away. On the eve of departure one of the group receives a visit from Terry, a man with no legs in a wheelchair, claiming he can get them a free minibus and free diesel. In return, all they have to do is take him with them.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

Weird, disproportionate, distorted sets, lots of make-up all gave an eerie feel to this film. Lucky that I don't read much before I watch a movie - it has a twist ending, perhaps the first to use it according to wikipedia.

Sherlock Jr. (1928)

A mere 45 minute movie full of laughs and surprises. Buster Keaton was great with risky physical comedy in The General. But what surprised me about this film are the sequences like Buster Keaton's dream-half entering into the screen in a movie within a movie and then the rapid changes in the scenery that follows - a bit surrealistic there.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)

Carl Theodore Dreyer uses lots of extreme close-ups in this film. Most of the film depends on Maria Falconetti's expressions, especially her eyes which widen up and gaze, close and sheds tears to convey what Joan could have felt through the trial. A powerful performance.

I noticed that one of the priests wears spectacles which look modern and the scissor used to cut Joan's hair was too modern for the 15th century. It's not an easy film to watch - either you'll be moved or bored. Try staring at this for 2 mins. If you can, you probably are good to go - I am serious!

Devil

Storyline

In Philadelphia, Detective Bowden is still grieving for his wife and son, killed in a hit-and-run five years ago. A suicidal person jumps off from the top of a skyscraper onto a truck, and Bowden is sent to investigate. Meanwhile five strangers are trapped in an elevator in the building where the jumper committed suicide. The communication radio in the elevator is broken but the guards, Lustig and Ramirez, observe the individuals via CCTV as events unfold. Having been trapped for some time, tensions are high, so Lustig calls the police and Detective Bowden assumes the case. Without being able to contact the individuals he tries to work out who they are and realizes he can only account for four of them. Time is running out for the occupants of the elevator as Bowden realizes he has to get them out quickly.

I usually look at remakes with apprehension. Will the new director maintain the story line? Will the new actor be as good as the old one. Will I get bored of constantly comparing the two movies in my mind as I see the new one?

Michael Caine was slick and suave in the 1971 version of Get Carter. I particularly loved the opening scene where they show Carter travelling by a train to Newcastle. The complete background music had tabla and sitar merging with the sounds of the train on the track. Stallone was crude and crass in the 2000 version.

But what happens when new technology is used? What happens when the story is actually improved? What happens when the new actors are as good?

The Italian Job was one such movie. The new version used superb star cast, implemented slick new technology, and improved the story a bit. Better than the Michael version? Nah! Maybe as good.

Take the case of Don. After you see the new version, Amitabh, Pran, Zeenat and others throwing the diary around and jumping all around looks silly today.

Take the case of Gajini. I did not see Memento, but Surya played the role superbly. But so did Amir, irrespective of the fact that a lot of Bollywood chose to tease him with silly TV shows. The director was the same, and the end was changed a little to suit North Indian tastes.

As discussed a few posts above, Charles Bronson was superb in the 1972 version of The Mechanic. But then I like Jason Stathom a lot also. Some of scenes in the 2010 version were silly - such as Arthur Bishop and Steve McKenna running riot in the middle of a city on a truck, a bus, and then with two heavy machine guns. Leaving aside that, the new version is as slick and set grabbing as the old one. Jason has played the role of Arthur well, and looks a killer. Ben Foster could have performed a little better, bit he is not too bad. The story is as gripping as the old one with a few new twists - a la Don old and Don new.

If you like Jason Stathom, don't miss this movie.

The only time Jason does not have slick come back is when Ben asks him, 'What kind of a man shoots a person in a wheelchair?'. What do you say when you feel sick and guilty at the same time?

Cheers

The Rebound 2009
This one is about a newly divorced lady who befriends her children's male nanny.
Its easy going movie. Its not by far great movie but can watch it once

No Strings Attached 2011
This movie is about 2 people who are sex buddies, (they only have sex and no relation) who ultimately fall in love.
Predictable but still entertaining.

Venkat, did you identify the TT/Amp/Speakers in the new Mechanic???

Nope. I am going to snap those scenes and put up the photos here for people to identify. I liked the way Jason makes a face when Ben touches his turntable and then chides him. I also liked the way you hear the initial scratch noise when the the cartridge sits on the LP. Cool.

Cheers

Ticking Clock [2011][Bluray]

Ticking Clock (Video 2011) - IMDb

A good Thriller/Sci-Fi movie. The thriller part of the movie is really interesting, keeps you glued to the seat, the sci-fi part is not so bad nor do good, supporting the thriller. Over all a movie worth a watch. Background score is good. Good performance by Cuba Gooding Jr.

cheers.

How Do You Know [2010][Bluray]

How Do You Know (2010) - IMDb

A good Romantic/Comedy movie. Comedy is good in the story, very good chemistry brought about between Jack Nicholson and Paul Rudd as father and son. Nice performance by both. Overall story is not so bad, with some good comedy by Owen Wilson.

cheers.

Conviction (2010) - IMDb Fantastic Movie, truly worth watching. Based on True Life Story *ing Hillary Swank & Sam Rockwell

The Next 3 Days is a movie on similar lines. John and Lara Brennen are happily married with a growing child. Lara gets arrested on a murder charge, and John spends three years fighting the case in court. When all avenues to justice seem to be lost, he decides to break his wife out of jail and escape out of the country. He has to leave a trail that will send the Pittsburg police on a wild goose chase. Russel Crowe plays the role of John Brennen well as a teacher who is committed but completely at sea in the new task he has set for himself.

Also liked the Fair Game. This is, again, based on a true story on how the Bush administration uses false intelligence information to wage a war against Iraq. When a CIA agent objects, the administration goes after her and her family and nearly destroys them.

Cheers

I like movies that actually scare me or make me uncomfortable with possibility. I really like resident evil afterlife and orphan movie. Both these movies are too horrified and I enjoyed them.
