The Movies I Liked

The Illusionist (2006)

The Illusionist (2006)

In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a magician uses his abilities to secure the love of a woman far above his social standing.

I know most of the FMs have seen "The Prestige" directed Christopher Nolan. The Illusionist is not on the same lines but in different colors... Its a very good movie....

Insomnia (2002)

This is a good remake of the original 1997 Norwegian movie, which is also very good. Another off-beat comedy i would recommend is Moonrise Kingdom.

Some movies which I watched on DVD... really worth the spend.

Murder by Decree - Released in 1979 - A Sherlock Holmes movie about investigation of the murders committed by Jack the Ripper and searching the truth for the conspiracy to protect the killer.

Some slightly off the standard movies

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) - IMDb
A nice movie about hope, faith and a bit of romance in trying to get incredibly Salmons into Yemen. Nice to see Emily Blunt in another offbeat movie.

Arbitrage (2012) - IMDb
In arguably, Richard Gere's best performance in a movie that lets you down slightly at the end. Its about about a hardball hedge fund owner who wants to retire to the sunset and sort out his personal as well as professional controversies. However, things dont go as per plan, so he needs to compromise.

The Words (2012) - IMDb
A story about a writer who found a story in an old bag and published it as his own. Things go great till an old man appears claiming his story.

Deadfall (2012) - IMDb
An action flick set in the snow covered borders between the US and Canada. A brother-sister duo is escaping from a casino heist and wont stop at anything to escape to Canada. Eric Bana plays a vicious killer brother and the seductive Olivia Wilde plays the sister.

Monsieur Lazhar (2011) - IMDb
A story about a class of kindergartens who have witnessed their teacher hanging herself in their class. Their replacement teacher is an old school teacher who has a personal tragedy of his own. Nice, moving movie.

Hysteria [2011]

Hysteria (2011) - IMDb

A good Comedy/Romance movie based on a true story about the doctor/inventor Mortimer Granville played by Hugh Dancy. Nice performance by him . Good cinematography. Nice use of costumes in this movie.

Cheers.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Intrigued by a few factors viz., written by Joss Whedon (Firefly, Buffy, Avengers) and Drew Goddard (writer of Cloverfield) and a 92% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, I thought I'd check out this movie. It never interested me because reading the plot made it seem like a disaster waiting to happen. I mean how old is "5 friends go into a lonely cabin in the woods"?

Turns out it's a clever mixture of all horror clichs in an interesting format. It makes fun of many of them and in a few circumstances, mirrors what the fan thinks when watching a horror movie. Be warned though - if you see this movie as anything other than a homage / tongue-in-cheek poke at horror movie genre, I am sure there will be utter disappointment. Expect every clich / dumb thing you can expect from a horror movie, do not expect to be scared even one bit, do not expect a film you hope to remember for long, do expect to be reminded of all the horror/slasher/gore films from time to time and may be you'll like it as much as I did.

+1. I watched this movie seeing the high imdb rating and after the movie I was like WTF?. Frankly, I didn't like it. If you take it as a homage or poke at horror movies then it is OK. Other movies that I didn't like are Shaun of the dead and Paul. Infact I have decided not to watch any zombie or vampire movies.

Even I had watched this movie sometime ago looking at the then high IMDB ratings (more than 8); but when I watched... what the hell !!!!! Everything was predictable and nothing sort of new in the movie...
One of the worst Hollywood movie IMO.... !!

NEW YORK
New York (2009) - IMDb

Another Hindi Movie good to watch.

In my opinion, this was the best Hindi movie made on the subject of 9/11 aftermath !! Having a nice plot and nice music... And not to forget Irfaan Khan's last few dialogues in the movie...watch out for it !!
But Karan Johar wanted to insert his nonsense vision to the same subject by making 'My Name is Khan', no offence to any KJ fans :-)

I know what you mean and feel. I watched "Citizen Kane" and was thoroughly bored. But I digress.

I watched and highly recommend "The Bonfire of the Vanities", a Brian de Palma movie starring Tom Hanks, Melanie Griffith, Kim Catrall, Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis.

Hmmm... I thought that was the whole point. IMDB ratings makes us expect a "horror" film, which it is not. If taken as a straight horror movie, I'd score it at 3.5/10 and would even then be considered very generous by others ;). But that way, we would be evaluating a stand-up comedian based on how emotionally effective his 'speech' was (or a spoof based on it's script). It is trying to be cleverly absurd - if that makes any sense.

The way I saw it was in the same spirit as Joss Whedon had mentioned here

On some level it was completely a lark, me and Drew [Goddard, director] trying to figure out what the most fun we could have would be. On another level its a serious critique of what we love and what we dont about horror movies.

I think of it more in the line of 'Planet Terror' for old horror films, where everything is 'bad' just for the sake of it. It was a throwback to the campy horror movies where stereotypical people do exactly what they are not supposed to do as if they are under the influence of Common sense reducers. Most of TCITW makes sense from the perspective of the horror movie fan often left wondering why the collective intelligence of all on screen characters put together is so low. It is no coincidence that the only 'thinking' character here is a stoner. I could go on, but I'd have to give away some of the 'plot' (and .... it doesn't make sense to spend any more time to think about this film).

Even when watched from this perspective, I agree that it does not meet the high expectations of a then 8.0 IMDB rating (now down to 7.2) or a 92% Rotten tomato freshness rating. It is at best a 6.0-6.5 when seen this way and does make a decent one time watch.

PS1: Many smarts online have mentioned this movie as a 'meta'. I had to look up the dictionary to know that they meant a 'self parodying film' :o
PS2: My standards for 'bad films' is abysmally low. I have watched too many bad movies to count, so relatively this is a 'better film'.

Play Misty for Me... A great directorial debut from Clint Eastwood.

Plus lots of extra content on the DVD, makes it a worth purchase as well.

Taken 2 (2012) - IMDb

Taken 2 follows the incidents in Taken 1. The grieved father of one of the victim of Bryan in Paris, vows to avenge and abducts Bryan and his ex-wife. This movie lacks the adrenalin rush that we felt in Taken 1, but it is still enjoyable. The '100 things I learned from' thread in imdb discussions is really funny.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) - IMDb

Cal Weaver becomes depressed when his wife Emily demands divorce. Jacob, a young womanizer, helps him to rediscover his lost manhood. Meanwhile Junior Weaver is having a crush on his baby sitter Jessica. Things take a different turn when Jacob meets Hannah.

21 Jump Street [2012]

21 Jump Street (2012) - IMDb

A hilariously funny Comedy/Action movie. Story is good supported by very good performance by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum . Nice chemistry between them. Supporting actors were also good. And the most funny part of the movie was Johnny Depp's entry in the end. A must watch. Good one.

Cheers.
