The Movies I Liked

Before Sunrise (1995) - IMDb - Not your typical romcom but still a very good movie about a boy meeting a girl on a train and parting after only one spent traveling through the city of Vienna.

Ethan Hawke is good as always but Julie Delpy is the surprise package here putting in a fine performance a French student who agrees to spend the night with a stranger she meets on a train.

PS - Its a talkie through and through and most of it is shot in the night... in other words no action, no situational comedy and no other actors or stars apart from the lead pair who spend most of the time talking about people, their thoughts, and actions.

Thanks to aneelr for an introduction to the "Before" trilogy.

Absolutely, these movies are really fun to watch.
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset

Love them both. Wonder why Bluray is not yet released for these movies.

Now awaiting to watch Before Midnight when it gets an Indian release.

Before Sunset (2004) - IMDb - Simply brilliant... and even improves on the original Before Sunrise. The story is more of the same... man meets woman and again they spend a few hours talking and catching up before he has to catch a flight back home to his wife and son.

Not too much in terms of a story arc... but the chemistry between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy is simply amazing and both the actors are at the top of their game in terms of performances.

Highly recommended for serious movie buffs.

Before Midnight (2013) - IMDb - Final part of the trilogy... its 9 years later from their meeting in Paris and 18 years from their Vienna meeting and Jesse and Celine are married with twin girls and holidaying in Greece.

This particular movie deals with Jesse and Celine having the typical arguments and problems that married couples have and re-discovering their love for each other.

Performances are excellent from both Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and fans of the first two movies will enjoy this one too.

World War Z (2013) - IMDb - Enjoyable action fare about a Zombie apocalypse and a man's fight to save the world and especially his family. Brad Pitt is in fine form and does a good job and the rest of the cast is pretty good too.

The action sequences are particularly good, especially those involving the zombies taking over entire cities and countries and the crowd panic and mayhem that ensues as a result.

Special mention for the SFX... a good workout for the home theater with lots of explosions and everything from cars, buildings, choppers and airplanes exploding to people screaming and running and bullets flying around. The Blu-ray version in particular has very good audio and the LFE is spot on.

Highly recommended if you have a home theater... even otherwise the movie is a pretty good action entertainer.

Madras Cafe [2013]

Madras Cafe (2013) - IMDb

A very good History/Drama movie. True Story about the Sri Lankan Civil war. And quite surprisingly a good movie from Bollywood . Editing, Cinematography and Background score very well done. Story is good. Nice performance by lead and supporting characters. The only thing which puzzled me was the linguistic conversation between the characters Jaya and Vikram, but none the less the drama of war, violence, conspiracy and betrayal was just too good. Worth a watch.

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks [2013]

We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks (2013) - IMDb

Another very good Documentary/Drama movie. Story is about Julian Assange and his the largest security breach in U.S. history. Contains archive footages of Julian Assange and Bradly Manning . A good watch.

Zaytoun [2012]

Zaytoun (2012) - IMDb

A good War/Drama movie. Good Story and nice location's . Good performance by Stephen Dorff and Abdallah El Akal. Background score is also good. Worth a watch.

Behind the Candelabra [2013]

Behind the Candelabra (2013) - IMDb

A very good Drama movie about W?adzio Valentino Liberace known as Liberace (pronounced as Liberachi), the highest paid stage performer of his time. Story is very good, a fascinating peek into the secret life of an icon . Fantastic performance by Michael Douglas and Matt Damon as Liberace and Scott respectively. Cinematography and Background score very good, and with some very good costume and set dressing , Steven Soderbergh takes the movie to a whole new level. Worth a watch, for all those who like movies like Milk (2008) - IMDb and Brokeback Mountain (2005) - IMDb , this is a must watch.

Cheers.

Atharintiki Daaredi (2013) - IMDb - Old wine in new bottle but the wine is good especially if you are a Pawan Kalyan fan. Simple story about the hero setting out to reunite 2 families, decent music and Samantha make for an enjoyable outing at the movies. Pretty sure don't need to recommend it to Pawan or Samantha fans... the rest... well there aren't any other decent to good movies running in the theaters anyway.

Raja Rani (2013) - IMDb - Nice movie with good performances from Arya and Nayanthara. The movie starts with their wedding and then shifts to their troubled marriage and then into flashback where we learn of their past affairs. Rest of the movie is about their moving on and making peace with each other. Definitely recommended if only for the reason debutant director Atlee has come up with something new instead of the usual run of the mill stuff.

28 Days Later... (2002) - IMDb - Virus outbreak leads to people turning into zombies and attacking and killing the remaining people. Pretty good and it definitely has its moments. The Blu-ray PQ though is pretty average (I believe the movie was shot on a camcorder).

28 Weeks Later (2007) - IMDb - The sequel has the UK quaratined and fighting back until the virus finds its way back to the remaining population and people turn into zombies and start killing again... has its scary moments and does not disappoint as a sequel.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan [2008]

You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008) - IMDb

A hilarious slapstick political Comedy movie. It's a no brainer movie, and looks like a spin off of Borat. Laugh, is just what the viewer would do through the movie. If you don't have anything to do, watch this movie.

B.A. Pass [2012]

B.A. Pass (2012) - IMDb

A good Drama movie. The story is good, a plot of an unemployed youth and his dilemmas, but the first half could have been better. The second half when the climax start is the interesting part of the story. Nice performance by Shadab Kamal. Cinematography and Background score is good.

Jobs [2013]

Jobs (2013) - IMDb

An okay Drama movie about the Steve Jobs and his career growth. Ashton Kutcher was good as Jobs, delivers the essence of Jobs in most of the scenes, but I felt the story could have been better. A lot a of abrupt cut's/jumps in the story.

Cheers.

Killer Elite (2011) - IMDb - Nice action thriller based on true events. Its got more brain than the usual Jason Statham movie and Clive Owen is in good form though Robert De Niro is wasted. Still an intelligent thriller about spies and espionage and definitely better than the IMDB rating.

Pacific Rim (2013) - IMDb - Transformers meets Aliens meets Godzilla. Underwater monsters invade our cities and its upto the humans to fight back in giant armored suits (the kind made famous by James Cameron in Aliens and Avatar).

An ok action romp that kids should enjoy more than adults. The Blu-ray version (not yet out) should be enjoyable in a proper HT setup.

Sleepy Hollow (1999) - IMDb - Supernatural murder mystery set in the year 1799 where a headless horseman is terrorising a small village and decapitating its inhabitants and making off with their heads. Johnny Depp is sent to investigate and bring the culprits to justice. A nice movie with a good performance from Johnny Depp with a very young Christina Ricci and a scary Christopher Walken. The Blu-ray version is perfect in terms of the sound effects and the picture quality too is excellent with perfect greys and blacks on the plasma.

Edward Scissorhands (1990) - IMDb - A nice romantic comedy about a young man who has scissors for hands and how he adjusts and fits in with "normal" people. Johnny Depp is brilliant in his performance along with a young Winona Ryder and Dianne Wiest. This one is highly recommended for Tim Burton's imagination and Johnny Depp's performance.

Watched Gravity (2013) - IMDb tonight at PVR Directors' cut.

Wow, what a movie!! An outstanding cinematic experience!!

A very simple story about surviving a space accident by two astronauts; but it is the execution that makes the movie perfect..yes I repeat, this a perfect movie on the subject!!
This is the movie with only 2 human actors and rest of the actors are like...random voices, random songs, the soundtrack and the silence of the space!! So what are George Clooney and Sandra Bullock doing in space? Clooney is not playing 'The American' here, neither trying to be Danny Ocean nor a mediocre Batman; still he is a fearless human with all the wit!
And Sandra Bullock is a great choice for this movie :)
Personally, I hate watching 3D; but this is the movie to be must watched in 3D at its first glance.

Life in space is impossible; but Gravity provides us an outstanding feeling of being in space!!

Re: The Movie I Liked

Planning to catch it this weekend... sadly though its not in IMAX or 3D despite there being an IMAX theater in Hyd.

The Italian Job (2003) - IMDb - Enjoyable crime caper about a group of thieves stealing gold without even using a gun. Mark Wahlberg and Jason Statham are in fine form and Charlize Theron is very easy on the eyes.

Star Trek (2009) - IMDb - A good reboot of the Star Trek franchise with Zachary Quinto as Spock and Karl Urban as Bones being just about perfect though one misses William Shatner as the captain. The rest of the cast is good too. The plot is ok, Eric Bana is somewhat limited in a one dimensional role, the SFX are spot on with the home theater.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) - IMDb - The sequel is again short on story and charaterization but high on action and some of the SFX on the home theater will blow you away. Good action, decent performances and very good sound effects make this a good watch.

Watched Man of Steel

Man of Steel (2013) - IMDb

I love superman but this movie is really bad,i love the cast and the effects were ok, but the Director is without a clue. He has to know to see how camera 'shake' should be used, but not overused, see Saving Private Ryan or The Avengers. Want to see how it detracts from a shot and ruins a movie because you are thinking more about the herky-jerky view rather than the scene, see this movie.
And Bluray transfer ! My god, Why the hell is a science-fiction movie is transferred in BD so grainy ? What the point ? Its not a docu-movie or horror. More to the plight of watchers, Cavil makes a very weak attempt at portraying Superman. The movie is horrible. there are a lot of plot holes and the story is overall dumb.
