Baby (2015) - IMDb - Good, really good in fact, but not great. Maybe my expectations were too high.
Akshay Kumar is the best part of it, performance is subtle, to the point and without any histrionics. Story is the next best part, it stays the course and does not stray with a useless comedy track or even the hero and heroine running around the trees. The ensemble cast is also spot on with uniformly good performances though only Akshay Kumar has a running role the entire length of the movie, other cast members keep coming and going as the situation demands.
Now for the cons...
1. Too much anti-Muslim/terrorists/separatists rhetoric that could be toned down.
2. Tries too much to be an espionage thriller, but needs a tighter script with a more thicker plot with more twists and turns to really keep things up there. Like I said good it is, great it is not. I'll not compare to Bond, but the Bourne series is a perfect example of an espionage thriller/series that works very well and something Baby does not emulate well enough.
3. Action is a big let down especially considering its an Akshay Kumar movie with an emphasis on an elite task force that takes no prisoners and has been commissioned to kill. Better action sequences/choreography would have definitely elevated this movie to a higher level... its let down by the usual lame punches thrown around. Heck even Taapsee does it better than Khiladi Kumar and that is saying a lot.
That said its an Akshay Kumar movie through and through, a subtle yet excellent performance from him... just wish the action element was commensurate with the espionage "take no prisoners" angle.
PS - Safe watch with entire family.
