The Movies I Liked

Re: The Movie I Liked

Saw "Margarita With A Straw ". Wonderful film. Very mature handling of a sensitive topic.

Saw The Million Dollar Arm... Based on true events the film showcases India through Hollywood's cliched eyes. Typical Mumbai impoverished scenes with little or no development shown. Anyhow the movie isn't about Mumbai. Good paced movie. Liked it.

Baby (2015) - IMDb - Good, really good in fact, but not great. Maybe my expectations were too high.

Akshay Kumar is the best part of it, performance is subtle, to the point and without any histrionics. Story is the next best part, it stays the course and does not stray with a useless comedy track or even the hero and heroine running around the trees. The ensemble cast is also spot on with uniformly good performances though only Akshay Kumar has a running role the entire length of the movie, other cast members keep coming and going as the situation demands.

Now for the cons...
1. Too much anti-Muslim/terrorists/separatists rhetoric that could be toned down.
2. Tries too much to be an espionage thriller, but needs a tighter script with a more thicker plot with more twists and turns to really keep things up there. Like I said good it is, great it is not. I'll not compare to Bond, but the Bourne series is a perfect example of an espionage thriller/series that works very well and something Baby does not emulate well enough.
3. Action is a big let down especially considering its an Akshay Kumar movie with an emphasis on an elite task force that takes no prisoners and has been commissioned to kill. Better action sequences/choreography would have definitely elevated this movie to a higher level... its let down by the usual lame punches thrown around. Heck even Taapsee does it better than Khiladi Kumar and that is saying a lot.

That said its an Akshay Kumar movie through and through, a subtle yet excellent performance from him... just wish the action element was commensurate with the espionage "take no prisoners" angle.

PS - Safe watch with entire family.

Avengers : Age of ultron ......... certainly not better than 1st. The climax fight was both more co ordinated and long in Avengers 1. 2 had its moments but not better than one ..............If I gave 7/10 for the first one I would give 6.8 to this .....

"Girl with the dragon tattoo" - terrific movie. I loved the north European setting. Cold, dark, windy. Rooney Mara is terrific. The suspense may not be out of this world but this is one hell of a movie. Do not miss it.

Yes, its amazing. However i would suggest watch the original Swedish movie Girl with the dragon tattoo . And, the later two swedish parts of the movie are also great 2 and 3. Hollywood unnecessarily glorifies certain things. The original movies captures the theme and thrill much better.

Watched "John Wick" on blu ray. Whoa what a movie and more importantly what a great disc. The sound mixing is simply out of this world and it is my new reference material. The mustang roaring on the airstrip, gun shots, explosions everything is out of this world. I'm in the market for a new center channel and this will be the disc i'll take. Oh coming to the center channel, i'm thinking of one of the following Polk tsx 250c, JBL studio 235c or Focal Chorus cc 700.

Terminator Genisys...well well well, I had huge expectations from TG after the crappy T3 and luck warm TS. Where every good review says that plot is the best of the 3 (T3, TS and TG) I on the other hand found it to be absolutely repulsive to the original T1 and T2. Alternate reallity, Parallel universe .... blah blah blah ... they made it so convoluted that all it manages to give was loop holes (if you start arguing about the time travel paradox). The first 2 Terminators knew the limitations of Time Travel and kept the science jargon to min and instead focused on the characters and screenplay. With T1 and T2 elements like performances, music score, editing, action, effects everything falls in the right place, thats the reason they are epic and even after watching it for ..... what like 20 times, it still gives me goose bumps when I watch it

3 attempts in the franchise and still none comes even remotely close to the first two.

Coming to characters, boy Jai Courtney is the poorest Kyle Reese of the series. He is the biggest miscast for the role. Michael Bhein's character of Kyle Reese is miles miles quantum miles light years ahead of what we see in TG. Its actually is a shame to the original Terminator movie. There was no chemistry between kyle and Sarah and the romance between the two (which btw is so maturely handled and delicately laid in out T1 that it still gives shivers when you see the movie.) looks so fake and unreal like cardboard characters.

CGI was good but nothing that we have not seen before, the young Arnold, I agree looked very real, much much better than the TS CGI Arnold. But when everything is CGI you just loose interest in action scenes, the old school action that was performed out there rather in fron of the green screen has no competition.

Music was disappoint as well, just one instance and when the credits roll we hear the legend, Fidel's epic score and thats it.

Its a 5.8/10 for this movie ......... In comparison T3 would be 5.3/10, TS 6/10 so you can have the comparison.

I Did actually find it better than t3 & t4.
The plot was simpler, more believable and tied up things neatly to actually an acceptable conclusion. The other 2 never seemed to have concluded the story.

For me it was more or less same as T3. TS for me was better ...... but TG I actually had very high hopes, which fell flat. It was very very ordinary ..... plot is not simpler at all, if I start there would be like gazillions questions that went unanswered ..... TS tries to be too smart and original if I might say, by throwing the time, quantum crap ..... bur it doesnt work ...... atleast it didnt for me..

Saare jahan se mehga .... Today on one of my roku 3 channel, i think "watch free flick" I was browsing Indian movies when I came across this almost non existant movie called "Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga...." Starring none other than "Aakho Dhekhi" character artist highly talented "Sanjay Mishra". Only like couple of reviews on IMDb which had nothing less than super praise for this one, and I though to give it a try. I am glad I did. Damm this one was a rare gem of a product from our bollywood. Debut movie from the director "Anshul Sharma" who has assisted in movies like Dev D, Pyar ka punchnama ...etc has made a heart warming, subtle, sataire on our typical "mehgayi" for people from lower middle class. Superbly directed with dialogues right on track and effluent performances from everybody makes this a must watch for people who knows quality cinema and can appreciate gem like these (instead of wasting time on crap like Bahubali and Bajrangi and what not). The director has caught the essence of lower middle class citizens masterfully. The humor is subtle, not over the top which is rare in Indian cinemas and most people will connect with the characters instantly......
its a solid 8.3/10 for this one ....

Ex Machina (2015) - IMDb

Ex Machina

Of the many AI films, I have watched this one was the most interesting. The basic plot is of a software programmer who wins a prize to spend a week with the reclusive and brilliant founder of the company.

The concept of the AI machines/robots and the testing of their humanness was novel and captivating esp. due to the stunning Alicia Vikander.

The end was a nice twist to the tale. I would rate this as a 8/10.

The visuals are stunning, the audio is not too important in this movie.

Ex Machina (2015) - IMDb

The visuals are stunning, the audio is not too important in this movie.

I humbly disagree, Ex Machina is the first movie to feature "DTS X", though we may be only utilizing the default DTS HD MA (due to lack of updated receiver), I still found the Audio terrific. Though not always striking as any action movies as being mostly dialogue oriented, but yet it created a great thrilling experience, whenever the backgrounds started playing.

The Little Death (2014) - IMDb

The little Death

This is an indie movie about Orgasms. The title is a slang for the same.

The concept is interesting as it deals with what excites different individuals and shows the whackiest of things that stimulates them. The story revolves around a few couple and each has kinky story.

While the concept was interesting and the story starts off really well and is quite funny. The story doesnt end very well, some of them quite badly.

I felt the story had a lot of potential and could have been handled better. Would give a 7/10 just for the novelty, else probably deserved a 6.

Ant-Man .... well let me start with this, There is nothing in AntMan that you have not seen before; as far as plot goes or how things unfold till the climax hits the scene. Its still cliched and messy here and there, but its a good mess rather than a superhero flick in depth and sense. It somehow manages to work. Mainly because the humor mostly falls correct than not, fine Performances, nothing out off ordinary. and saving grace; the effects.........., spectacularly shot. Fast and clean. The scene when our AntMan is running across a model with bad guys shooting and dispersing the model haywire is framed in excellence slomo. The tie up with Avengers here and there was cool. Over all a very decent watch ....6.8/10

Mad Max - Fury Road .... Mind Blowing ..... this movie is batshit insane man. Starts off with action, continues with action and ends with action. Stunts, effects and CGI are just top notch. The plot is non existent (which is what most of the haters of this movie are discussing on IMDB) BUT if you ask me execution is what made the difference.
The visuals and the cinematography of the dystopian world is amazing. The pace is insane, that probably is why quite a few viewers did not like the movie. It does not give time for viewer to absorb the characters, and immediately puts them in the world of ultra action. For me it had just enough to bond with the characters and then just enjoy the hell ride it offers. I truly enjoyed the movie ...................... 7.5/10
