The Movies I Liked

At times I felt like this is much more interesting and tense than Mississippi Burning.

That is because we are Indians and can emote more with the actors, scenes, and situation? Must see Mississippi Burning again. But one thing was very telling. In Mississippi Burning, both Daniel Dafoe and Gene Hackman come across as being extremely arrogant with the power of FBI in their pockets. In Aakrosh, though both Akshay Khanna and Ajay are from the CBI and Army, their helplessness against local politics and local power is very well done.

To others, this is a movie worth watching.

Cheers

Dhobi Ghat.

A neat film. There are clichs galore but the movie did stay with me.

The 3 characters - Arun, Munna, Shai - in same frame in a crowded night bazaar served no purpose. Also, Yasmin's leg dangling shot really took the away some of the impact of the scene.

Gustavo Santaolalla's guitar seduces though somewhere it had a bit of 'Brokeback Mountain'ish feel.

Kiran does love Bombay and it shows. She tops it with rain and creates a perfect mood.

Bombay - I love you, come back.

Watched the King's speech yesterday.

The plot is a neat Historical Drama from the WWII era, 1944 I guess. It got me googling a bit of history which I like doing :)

Good acting by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. Saw GR last in Pirates of the Caribbean. Acted very well. Rated 8.5 by IMDB.

Dhobi Ghat - Themes

The divide

From Raj Kapoor and Nargis in Awaara to Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani, love between a rich girl and a poor guy is a recurring motif in hindi cinema. Dreams, magic, any thing can happen on celluloid. Love knows no boundaries. So they say.

Life is not like that though. There is a divide which is evident from the different utensils the maid gives Munna and Shai when serving them tea to the way the friends of Shai joke about her hanging out with him. Munna standing on the road while Shai leaves in her car is a recurring event in the film. Even when Munna joins Shai in the car, the divides are evident. Shai wants to take Munna's porfolio shots (as he wants to become an actor) out in the open but Munna wants them in the studio.

Voyeurism

Shai shoots Arun while Arun is looking at Yasmin's videos. Love, Sex and Dhoka explored this theme in much more detail. The voyeuristic nature of our society is quite sad. As soon as you are interested in some one, you check out more info via google, facebook. When you encounter the person in real life though, like Shai sees Arun on the road, they try to hide away.

Unrequited love - A constant and most obvious theme in the film. I am always glad on the rare occasions when some one shows it on celluloid like in Kabhie Haan Kabhie Na, Darr, Saawariya and of course Devdas. There is a deep grief about unrequited love which is probably why it makes for great cinema.

The breaking of families

Aamir is disconnected with the real world all the time. However, when he hears the possibility of going to Sydney, he becomes alert. He probably longs to see his son all the time. The old woman is some one whose children have left her on her own in all probability. I see a lot of older people being abandoned. I used to visit an old home till a few years back and it is heart breaking when you talk to some of these people.

The Daily Grind

The day job of Munna is not enough. He has to kill rats at night to make ends meet. Munna idolizes the leading man Salman Khan. He has dreams but as responsibilities crush him, all he can think about is how to earn money. Any small role to make ends meet will do for him.

A lot of people haven't liked this film which is okay as it isn't a movie for every one. However, when you talk with people who have indeed liked the film, a lot of people say it is beautiful. When you look at the photographs of the people, it is indeed quite beautiful to look at. However, their life is a mess. Like Munna, they are trying to make ends meet, or are emotionally scarred like Arun, or even have had their lives destroyed like Yasmin. Munna asks Shai why she is shooting the common place Mumbai streets. "Why are you doing this?", he asks? "All is dirty here." For Shai, it is all very lovely from the outside. There is nothing beautiful about the stark, harsh realities of life though. 10/10.

PS - On Kriti Malhotra's performance- She was the soul of the film. Delectable in her potrayal of the innocent and full of love Yasmin Noor.

Both the female actors were good. Prateik is a delight to watch. Aamir is a total miscast. He is good but only when not mouthing those visibly uncomfortable English dialogues.

A funny/hilarious Comedy/Drama movie. Nice comic performance by Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg. The movie keeps us laughing for quite some time.

Cheers.

+1 before watching the movie I thought how it will be comparing to starscky & Hutch... It lived up to the expectations... Will and Mark good job ... :)

127 Hours is a mouth-watering delight. The first time you watch, it is a rush. Second time, you will appreciate the nuances.

Wish Danny Boyle had better continuity. Also an A.R. Rahman track at the end (instead of Sigur Rs 'Festival') would have bettered the maestros chance at the Oscars.

Watch it, watch it, watch it.

The James Cameron produced Sanctum is pretty good too.
I caught it on 2D, but interesting nevertheless.
Its kind of stressful watching it but liked it. Dont know why Masand washed it down.
Also came to know because of this movie that IMDB rating are not right always. (They may be rigged)

I think the reviews have been harsh.I liked it.
Its not a james cameron movie anyway. He is only a producer.
I think these guys start to judge performance, actors too much leaving out the movie.

A good Action/Crime movie. Story is simple, with some good gags and twists. Some good action sequences. Nice cinematography and sound mixing. Good performance by Jason Patric.

cheers.

I will try to watch this movie.
BTW is it released on DvD already? Coz the screenshots posted are very clear!

It is playing in the theatres. I watched it first day actually and then watched it again a few days later. The dvd hasn't been released but there is a pirated copy circulating from which I got the screen shots. Really, you should watch it on the big screen though. Such a movie should be encouraged and the best way you can do it is by buying a ticket. I am going to buy the blu-ray-dvd twin pack (Aamir Khan did it for Peepli Live and there is no reason he wouldnt do it for Dhobi Ghat) and am very keen on listening to the commentary by Kiran Rao. I hope Aamir has a track too but I doubt he will.

A very good Spanish Mystery/Drama movie. Very good screenplay, nice performance by Penlope Cruz. The movie has got some intense emotions, and good twist in the end. Must watch.

Cheers.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
