Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

I do have a question regarding a few of these settings.
Backlight: SDR to 90, HDR to 100, Sports to 100. For a darker room, reduce as per your comfort in SDR or sports mode - How do you switch between SDR, HDR and Sports here? All i see is a slider to set Backlight without any option to toggle between SDR, HDR and Sports. Same goes for Local Dimming, Contrast, Color Saturation and Ultra Smooth motion.
Those are modes. The TV has 3 sets of modes: SDR modes, HDR modes and Dolby Vision modes. By default the TV is in SDR modes. When you play HDR10 content it will switch to HDR modes and when you play DV it will switch to DV modes.

For SDR content, I prefer having two modes one standard and one sports. To get my settings dialed in:
  • Play some SDR content from youtube/DTH whatever.
  • Select standard mode as your 'Picture mode' in settings>display and set my SDR settings.
  • Select sports mode and dial in my sports settings
  • Play an HDR video, you'll see the modes have switched to HDR based modes like HDR dynamic, HDR day and so on..
  • Dial in my HDR settings
  • Play a DV video, and dial in my DV settings.
You'll need to choose a mode for each content type and change that. I chose standard, sports, HDR dynamic and DV bright to start with as those seemed the easiest to set from and I wanted to finally compare to the 'accurate' modes.

Thanx for the info man.
Have tweaked it minus the sharpness. Set is at around 10 as it felt better to my eyes.
Gotta watch a lot of content now and see :)

Hey guys, the HT system(logi z906) finally arrived and got it set up with the TV using optical cable and passing the audio as auto. The TV seems to correctly be passing DD and DTS 5.1 channel audio, and transcoding other formats to these.

Regarding the speakers, they are a steal for ₹17.5k (₹19k - 1.5k HDFC discount) and if they come down to this price again, I'd highly recommend going for it. The mids and lows are amazing for a budget HT system and sound is very clean at regular volume level. A great fit for this TV.

Since my setup is complete, I'll be taking a leave from the forum. Had a nice time discussing with you guys :). See you all(or at least some of you) next year's Diwali season when I purchase an OLED and Atmos system for my personal use.

Are these TVs assembled in India? If so these are way too costly, crossing 100rs/$ mark. Even say Samsungs Frame is much cheaper coming to around 76rs/$ although that is not assembled in India and should attract 20% additional tax. Also pretty weird they're using Hisense's vidaa os, maybe it really is just a TV for China market being sold here. Also weird considering they're selling under Toshiba brand
Hope price falls and they sell h8g or smaller models of h9g next year instead of h8f

Hisense is selling U7QF in India which is equivalent to H8G

On my firestick i had to manually switch to 4K else Netflix didn't play in 4K. Even after switching it seems to be playing in HDR10 only. I have connected it to HDMI4. How are others using it?

Same here... Not able to get DV on NF using FireTV 4k. I use inbuilt NF app now to watch Dolby content and rest I use FireTV 4k.

How about port 1?

I am able to see UHD + HDR on Port 4.
Port 2 i was getting error related to HDCP2.2.

i+ button doesn't seem trustworthy to check exact details of content being played.

Also there is nothing on primevideo in Dolby Vision.

I guess next time Multiple DV ports in tv is going to be a hard requirement for me :(

Yeah. Looks like it was concluded earlier on in the thread that external devices are not able to play Dolby vision over HDMI. Probably an issue with Vidaa OS than Firestick. Hope a future update is able to solve this.

Its almost same price as u80, too much.. And some reviews are not good I guess due to vidaa and its out of the box performance. But the u7qf in India does have Android
Does anyone know if all these are assembled in India?

On HDMI 2/4 - I get HDR on FireTV 4k. Netflix never plays DV from these ports though. On Prime (Mirzapur) I could see UltraHD on info.

I am using HDMI 1 as ARC port since I wanted the Dolby output on my AVR. The issue I am facing is, I have to set DD as output in the sound settings. Rest encodings (Auto, Passthrough, DD+) are not able to send audio to AVR over ARC, dont know why. I remember DD+ working fine before.

So in nutshell:
1. I am using NF on Vidaa to get DV content, 5.1 audio is sent over ARC to AVR
2. Connected FireTV 4K stick to HDMI 2 - I get 4k HDR picture but NF is not able to send over DV content. Prime is able to send over UltraHD quality picture
3. Since my AVR supports 4K passthrough but not HDR, I have to connect FireTV to TV directly and route audio over ARC. DD is working fine for this purpose.
4. I have my HTPC connected to AVR which is connected to TV on HDMI1. Audio is decoded by AVR (So no issues) and TV is able to upscale the FullHD content quite well

I hope next update on Vida will solve the audio passthrough issue. Anybody got the passthrough working so far?

Why are they not restocking it? Its been several weeks now. As anyone any Idea regarding this?

I have this TV and I can say that this is not too great of a TV, its suited only for watching HDR Contents and for streaming Netflix etc. albeit with some motion handling issues, but for watching normal tv even HD channels the processing is too poor I have a 6 year old Sony non HDR TV and it feels far more better than U79 for non HDR content with exceptional motion handling and picture quality.

SDR its poor. But for HD content you have to use the setting which suggested by lightgamer. it looks good. even it depends on OTT. i see much difference in Hotstart ,zee5 with amazon, netflix, sunnxt. hotstart,zee5 or worst even in any tv because of their configuration.

in fire stick setting in display did you have 4K steaming and always HDR.

I find it surprising. Upgrading from a samsung plasma tv I find the picture very good. Yes, there are some motion issues. But rarely notices it.
May be your expectations are bit high.
Overall, I am enjoying it.
