Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

Which router are you using?
Right now I'm using a mesh network with 3 nodes. We've recently shifted to a big and old house with more than 1.5 feet thick walls. They are very hard to penetrate with signal so a mesh network was necessary.

The one I'm currently using is called Tenda MW6. It's a mid-range mesh setup, but I got it for a really good discount last year for ₹7500 (for all 3 nodes). Amazon link if you're interested in looking at it.

I tried this one. Iball has a rebranded version of the same for a much lower price. It has great 5ghz but 2.4ghz sucked (keeps breaking every few mins) so I am shifting from it. Maybe it was specific to my hardware but i was facing it on all three nodes on multiple clients

TP-Link Archer A6 is a good one, they have got a new Version 3 now with mediatek chipset. Best dual band router for the money. I'm using it since a couple of months without any problems.
I am using this now. It beats mw6 on 2.4ghz but the 5ghz performance isnt even close to it. I am looking for some setup to cover 4000 sqft of space. Currently gonna go with a6. Lets see how well it handles bd-mux

I have a 100 Mbps connection. I get around 98-102 on 5Ghz and around 78-85 on 2.4Ghz. Serving me well.

I'm not sure about the iball one being a rebrand of the mw6. The one I saw online are a rebrand of look similar to the MW3 which is a lower end mesh system.

I've had no issues with 2.4 GHz with the MW6 till now. Absolutely 0 disconnections.

I have used these three routers before switching to the MW6:

TP link archer A6: awful signal strength through walls. Can't even penetrate two walls. Decent bandwidth at line of sight though.

D Link DIR-816: Good signal and decent signal strength. Can penetrate two walls but very weak signal afterwards. Main disadvantage is that the WAN port is just 100 Mbps.

TP link C1200: best of the three. Had better signal strength and speed than the other two. Could reach about 350 Mbps.

Now with Tenda MW6, I can do about 400 Mbps over 5GHz and 80 over 2.4. The mesh covers my entire house nicely with no dead zones and 150 Mbps even on the street outside the house.

About your iball router, please send me a photo or a link to buy one. The one on iball site doesn't even look remotely identical and neither does the one on amazon or anywhere online.

Hi. I am trying to buy u79 in Gurgaon but it seems it’s unavailable online and offline reliance stores are also saying that it’s unavailable. I would have preferred to see the demo too. Does anybody have any info for the stores having stock or demo available in delhi or Gurgaon?

Thanks for the detailed review. I was considering the other 2 as well

This is the iball router which is rebranded mw6 : amazon link . I had bought it last year when they had launched it
This is the rebranded mw3 : amazon link
They don't look identical but the specs are the same so they probably just changed housing. I am able to access them via the tenda app so they are definitely rebranded but I guess during rebranding they have resulted with a buggy firmware so probably that is causing the problem.

Currently my plan is to setup a mesh network with tp-link a6. Their new firmware supports mesh so hopefully it will do the trick.
Or maybe iball would have released a firmware update for it but given that this product seems to be discontinued, it is unlikely

I went to rajouri garden reliance digital and placed an order for 65 u7980. It is not available in that location but they are arranging one from hyderabad. It will be delivered by end of this week or early next week. Only 15 pieces were available in Hyderabad when I had placed the order so if you want one then I would recommend that u order one soon as new stock can't be imported till toshiba gets the license for it and given the bureaucracy and the anti-china sentiment, it might take a lot of time for toshiba to get one.

Although recently hisense has become available in NCR again so I might be wrong.

I got it for 65k after ICICI card discount. I didn't negotiate so you might get a better price if you do. I just wanted them to arrange this model for me.
No demo available in NCR. I am buying it based on reviews of fellow members on this website and rtings review of h8f

So I researched a bit on this and it seems like they are using same PCB. However the housing is different and the claimed range is different too (4500 sq. Feet vs 6000 on MW6). Also, this unit sells for cheaper than an MW6 in China during 1's day sale, so there's no way they use completely same hardware. If iball was able to make it this cheap, Tenda would also have been a lot cheaper at least in China.

My assumption is that the PCB and gigabit ports are the same, but they are using different WiFi hardware. Else the range and design would be the same.

Why not just get Tp link's mesh networks. The E4 is selling for just 9k. The A6 is a really low end router which won't perform that well even with mesh since your backhaul will not be very high performance.

In networking, going for better firmware is very very important. I'm sure that TP link dedicated mesh routers will work way better with regards to handover and smart 2.4 and 5GHz selection.

Most of the mesh systems have limited features like they can only be accessed via app, tenda mesh systems dont allow assigning permanent ip addresses based on mac, u need to have the same name for 2.4ghz and 5ghz. These are few problems i remember that i had faced so realised that mesh networks are probably for usual user who dont require much advance features and just need a simple setup. That is why switching to normal router with mesh capability.
I am doing a gigabit wired blackhaul. Plus wired is always more stable and lower latency.
I was considering a7 and a8 model as well but a7 doesn't have mu-mimo , all reviews show that a6 out performs it and a8 doesn't have mesh capability so it wouldn't work without the wired blackhaul.

I have the best experience with Xiaomi router but i only have one of those and now imports have got really expensive and time taking.

Probably will switch to wifi 6 routers once Xiaomi products are available to import again

You can set permanent IP address on your machines themselves, so it's never an issue. Also, if the same MAC address connects again, it will always assign the same IP as before automatically. The major benefit of the same name for 2.4 GHz and 5GHz is the seamless switching without reconnecting your WiFi which can interrupt connections. If I'm on my phone and I get away, it automatically will switch me to 2.4 GHz. I don't see anything I want to do I can't with a Mesh setup. Also, you can do a wired backhaul with a mesh setup as well.

My next upgrade will be WiFi 6E based mesh system. 6 -> 6E is a much bigger upgrade than 5 -> 6 due to massive channel bandwidth. Anyway, this is the last reply on this off-topic discussion. If you want to continue, we can do it over private messaging.
