Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

congrats bro hope u like it
ill wait for u80 or go for samsung 65ru7470

This is my parents' TV actually. I'm at hometown currently due to the pandemic, and I really can't watch 1080p 42" TV they had, so upgraded theirs. For myself, I'm still on the lookout. I'll probably buy next year after I move back to Bangalore again when there's a vaccine and the virus is no longer a threat.

I'll either get a C9/CX or the U8080 if it turns out to be a great panel.

I do have to diners club card. How do you get the discounts to 39K?

Diners club black gives you 16.7% reward rate on anything purchased through amazon. They can be transferred 1:1 on any flight/train ticket or hotel reservation, so almost equal to real money. The usual rate is 3.33% on every purchase and there's a 5x multiplier on Amazon, 3x on flipkart.

So from 47k, I went to 40k after 39.15k after 16.7% off, and there's a current offer going on which gives you 1000 amazon/flipkart/bigbasket coupon if you purchase over 33k from the card in September (check your email, there must be from HDFC if you have the same card). So overall it cost me 38.15k.

So I poured myself into the reviews for the Hisense A8F and here's the thing: This is an great TV for watching movies and shows. Period. And at the price point we are getting, its just amazing! Gaming on the other hand is not that great. Lots of issues there esp the game mode. Now it can be argued that the game mode in VIDAA OS may be better since the complains are from the Android version, but the panel itself is poor in terms of motion. So I don't think, it will be that better. For Action movies, there are 2 arguments. On one hand, there is low stutter compared to faster panels which is great but there is comparatively more judder and motion blur.

Overall, its great for watching movies and TV shows. Better color overall than even the Samsung Q60R (after calibration that is). Comparing it to that TV because that's what one will have to spend to overcome the motion handling issues but compromise on the PQ (it does not have FALD). And it is 30k more than this. So I don't think one can get anything better for the price. Take it from a guy who owns a 2008 21" Onida CRT and a HP 720p 15.6" Pavilion. I know what I am saying :p

On a serious note guys, is there a good TV under 60k? :/ I don't care too much for HDR. Good motion handling, upscaling for DTH and SDR are what I want. But every TV I see messes something up. Digit reviewed the Hisense A71F today and the dude said very positive things about it. I like his reviews since he is not a spec sheet reader and actually uses a bunch of reference scenes from movies, shows and games. It is not scientific but a good naked eye review (which is what matters in the end anyway).

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a very good motion for action films. If a panel has slower response time, it adds motion blur which actually looks good for 24p movies. If action movies required fast motion, they'd be shot at 48 or 60 fps or even higher.

Where good motion is required is in watching sports. But our sports channels are in quite a bad shape, with cricket not being streamed at 50/60 fps. I watched cricket replays at 50 fps on ICC's youtube page, and it looks godlike. I hope that's fixed soon and we start streaming cricket at 60 fps. I'd pay extra for that!

Edit: Look at here and here for samples of cricket at 50 fps.

This TV is pretty good under 60k, no? I don't think you can get comparable PQ anywhere below 85k (the frame). Reviewers who compared A71F v/s U50 rated U50 over it in PQ, and the U79 is a significant step above that as well. I'll be able to put my personal review as well in 2-3 days when it arrives, but from what I've seen this TV should be very good.

I don't think motion is that bad at all. Not sure if it is improved by VIDAA engine but tweaking the motion settings make the stuttering almost non existent. I didn't notice any issues when playing Forza on Xbox either but YMMV.
Also, I did see the digit review posted today and even though I generally like his stance on things, the A71F is objectively a bad TV. Like, I could clearly see the poor screen uniformity and light bleed in the video while he was saying how the picture quality was good. Not sure if it's because it's not translating well over YouTube though.

I guess you gotta wait for U80 to be launched and for a 55" version of it to be announced as well. Might be a long wait but if you are in no hurry, not a bad option, no?

Yeah it definitely is! So going by what you rightly explained regarding motion in movies, this should be good for action movies as well. I don't watch sports so video games is the one that remains. @fragpic said he is fine playing on it. And it is Forza which I can easily take as example of a fast paced game.
You know what? I have played tons of games and watched tons of movies on my current HP 720p screen. And it has served me well. Maybe all this reading has got me overthinking/FOMO-ing.
Anyway.. :)

When he said in the end that I personally like watching this TV with dim lights ON and not in complete dark, I felt that's what he was pointing out in a diplomatic way :D

Sorry to say this but what is the point of asking same things again and again.we have discussed till death about these toshiba tvs already in 2 threads. You have created seperate thread about 55 inch tv recommendation.where people have given you many suggestion .again you are asking which tv to buy under 60k.

Guys please read posts and dont ask the same questions.

Yeah I hear you man. Regarding this Toshiba, I asked about the motion handling myself and what I found by going through a lot of reviews, I just felt it would be helpful to others if I put it here. I am sure there are others who have the same use case as me.

Regarding the 60k suggestion thing, I gotta admit I said it in a rhetorical/rant sort of a way. Even on my thread, the models we have discussed are all 70-75k. And I am just trying to negotiate in the market since those are over a year old and yet they aren't lowering the price. So its kinda frustrating you know. Anyway, didn't mean to cause redundancy in the threads :)

No issues man.we are all here to help each other in selecting a good tv.so cheers

So after putting up the measurements on the wall, wifey struck down the 65inch variant. Even though our viewing distance is 14 ft, she feels it would be too big and as her eyes are a bit sensitive, I dont want her to suffer. May be next time, I would be able to convince her to go for a 65inch TV. Or else the money I saved will put into equity for a year or so and then will go for a projector ;). I booked the 55inch variant and expected delivery is next week. Will put a review here.

BTW exactly after 10 years I am buying a TV. My 42 inch Panasonic plasma is still going strong but as I wanted to move it to bedroom, thought of buying a bigger screen this time.

Here:

As per the above article, I think the prices of Imported TVs are not affected, since we are already paying 20% import duty on it. It is the assembled in India TVs whose prices are going to get affected. I think GoI wants OEMs to manufacture panels in India itself and given them a time frame of 1 year to set up the infrastructure.

I have received the TV yesterday afternoon, but no one has called for installation or got any message, Can we install it ourselves, will it void any warranty?
Edit: I'm not going to wall mount any way.

If you dont plan to wall mount, you should be fine installing it yourself if you have another person to help you. The TV itself is quite light.
Just place it face down on the box(with the plastic cover) and screw in the stands. Warranty will not be affected since it is not dependent on installation unlike ACs
