Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

Thanks for all your inputs, I installed the TV myself, Here comes my initial impressions,
Tv is too big for my eyes as I'm used to Sony 42W900B, good that I did not buy 65 inch.
Tata sky DTH upscaling is really good for the HD channels on par with the Sony I had.
Prime video is a treat to watch, but the App implementation is not that great, its buggy ,Hope it gets fixed in the upcoming updates.
The viewing angle is not that great may be I'm used to the IPS panel in my Sony,
I have set the Judder and Blur reduction to 3 like fragpic said and it is very good.
I don't feel any motion related issues, may be I'm not exposed to high end tv's that's why.
One thing that I noted is the blacks are too much black, that the details in those areas areas are lost, I'm yet to play around with the settings.
Overall the TV is very Good, except for the viewing angle, if you have a wide living room then this may cause a problem.

Edit: The Picture quality even in DTH HD channels are mind blowing when watched from the center.

Hi,

Expecting delivery for the 55" tomorrow.

Has anyone connected a firestick 4k with the TV?

How is the experience with Dolby vision and Atmos?

Was looking forward to using my XBox One X for playing Netflix, but an older version of Dolby vision seems to be a bummer.

I was using the VU Premium Android TV earlier and I am hoping that it is a significant bump in the quality.

Thanx for the review man.
Could you also play some DTH SD channels and check the upscaling in that?

Sure I will try some 720p and 1080p in my pen drive and provide my update, for streaming I have to try from my PC
The amazon prime videos looks marvelous from the inbuilt app, This panel is really good value for the money, the Picture quality is amazing
Personally I dint like the sound, dolby atmos are all marketing Gimmick, in my old TV I used topping amp with Dali speaker and I'm going to retain the same.

SD channels are watchable depending on the content, some SD channels are worst than the others, my eyes got used to it after watching for some time, I watch only few TV channels and for those I bought the HD Pack.

I know I've already ordered the thing, but does 4k work on Prime Video?

Congrats. I'd suggest trying out my settings. I don't see the black crush issue you're talking about.

TV speakers are pretty average. I checked DV on internal Netflix app and HDR from Netflix app on Xbox. Cant tell any difference, at least to my eyes.

Agree, Dolby Atmos on the TV itself is pretty useless even when I fed it an Atmos signal. It seems to just be a useless toggle.
But I was able to get a much better audio quality when I used the Xbox's Atmos for Headphones plugin which downmixes an atmos signal into stereo. It's supposed to be used for headphones but I noticed that it made a huge difference for the TV speakers too.

Has anyone tried connecting a sound bar through Optical / Bluetooth?
While using my Android TV, the sound bar would only connect automatically over Bluetooth when I turned on the TV, otherwise would need to manually select the sound bar .. As I could understand, this was a constraint on the Android side.. Any experiences on VIDAA?
Also, does it allow controlling the volume when connected through optical using the TV remote?

Has anyone compared this with the Samsung TUE60.. it’s available for 50K on Amazon.. The TV is yet to be delivered and I just wanted to weigh against any potential alternate..

Your priority of connecting to any speaker setup should be : eARC > ARC > optical > analog > bluetooth. Bluetooth should be the last ditch option when other connections are not possible. But my TV should arrive tomorrow and I'll try connecting to my stereo monitors via bluetooth as well.

You won't be able to adjust sound using TV remote if you're doing a bitstream(optical, ARC, eARC). Those are digital audio formats and the TV can't amplify the signal before sending it. It's not possible technically on any TV or audio source. You will be able to do that by using bluetooth(on most devices) and analog (on all devices).

They are not even comparable. Any Samsung TV except the Frame is horrible value for money, and that's especially true for this year with their T lineup of QLEDs which are worse and more expensive than last year's lineup.

If you want to get an idea of where this TV stands in terms of PQ, somewhere in between Q60R and Q70R(closer to Q70R). And if talking in terms of this year's lineup, somewhere between Q70T and Q80T(closer to Q70T).

Thanks for sharing the details..

The TV was delivered and installed. Amazon delivery team installed the TV at the time of delivery itself. No questions on alternates now.

Regarding the audio settings, found a setting to enable SPDIF only.. Have enabled it, but haven't tested it out yet.

Will go ahead and change the video settings as suggested by @fragpic and give my views.

But Q7980 is not QLED one no?

The benefit of QLED(quantum dot enhancement layer) is wide colour gamut which is generally more expensive and harder to achieve on regular LCDs. However, the U7980 has a wide colour gamut, so basically the same. QLEDs in use by other manufacturer has only recently picked up, and since this is based on a 2019 model, it doesn't have it. Either way, it shouldn't matter to you as a consumer. This TV will still produce about the same colours a QLED panel produces.

Just for comparison, here are the DCI-P3 colour gamut the TVs achieve:

U7980/H9F: 94.72 %
Q60R (QLED): 92.54 %
Q70R (QLED): 93.67 %
Q70T (QLED): 92.19 %
Q80R (QLED): 94.02 %
Q90R (QLED): 94.14 %

As you can see, it actually produces higher colour gamut than budget QLED TVs. QLED is just a marketing term, it isn't comparable to OLED

SPDIF is your optical cable. Also known as Toslink. Unless you're using a 5.1 channel system and need Dolby Atmos it's more than enough. And since it's optical, there will be much fewer compatibility issues since it works on everything.

So, according to you I should go with Toshiba 7980 in place of waiting for Toshiba 8080/ Hisense QLED TV? What should be expected life of these TVs, as 4 years warranty is not available now?

Can we hope any Diwani offer on Toshiba TVs? Or there will not be any offer as the TV has just been launched? Further, will the price of these TVs increase from October 1 due to change in Tax slab?

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
