Vinyl I am listening to...

At my friend's father's funeral she played "Break on thru to the other side" most of the mourners almost fell into the grave.

Listened to James Last Live, early this morning. this used to be Dad's fav LP:

I am thinking of starting a thread called "Vinyls I am not Listening". We can post ones we bought but didn't hear as they await cleaning. Many who are too busy to hear them can post about them. :D

Funny idea, but be assured that I will have quite a few of them to 'report' in that thread:D

John Mayall - blues from laurel canyon ,

Donald fagen - Morph the cat.

a few thoughts on the sound quality of morph the cat ,anybody ?
whilst the lows are amazing , i find the highs a little distorted. wonder if i've ruined the grooves or my entry level OM5 cartridge isnt good enough.

Hi ss,

It may be due to low tracking weight.

N.Murali

Hi Murali,

thanks for your input.thats what i thought initially , tried altering weight too, didnt make much difference.right now i've plugged in the thorens TD190-2 with the OM5 cartrdige. had the same problem with my project Debut-III with the OM5 cartridge. ( by the way it happens ONLY with this album, both LPs of the double album)

I have encountered this problem with some new records and some older ones as well. But I found out that the when I played these records with my Technics S-tonearm, the issue disappeared but reappeared when I used straight tonearm turntables. The cartridge alignment has to be spot on when using straight arms, from my experience. Also the tracking force and anti skate calibration has to be spot on. However hope your LP does not have bad grooves. I have noticed that if the grooves are very narrow, the problem tends to appear more especially with tracks closer to the label. Some of the cream label (with red letters) EMI records released by the Gramophone Company of India LTD were notorious for this.

with due apologies for hijacking this thread - but the urgency warrants this digression .i have found a Technics SL-D3 turntable in near mint condition , also thrown is a brand new AT91 cartridge. asking price is 12K . is this a fair price ?

This is a fully automatic direct drive turntable. The AT-91 is a good sounding value for money cartridge. I have used this before on an Akai turntable. You've mentioned that the TT is in near mint condition, did you get to audition this piece personally?

The Technics SL-D and SL-Q series are good turntables for in that price range and can last you a very long time. Not too sure on the price bit. I think sub 10k would be an ideal price.

Cheers...

PS: By any chance, is this from the dealer Antique Palace?
