Vinyl I am listening to...

Although, funnily enough, i've heard some records that are downright FLIMSY that have blown away some 180 gm and 200 gm pressings. Beautiful South is one band that comes to mind.. I think it comes down to the music production quality and the mastering as opposed to thickness of vinyl. You can buy a 200gm vinyl of a bad recording and it would still sound like crap (might not warp though)

Can you guys share the online sources to get LPs from abroad including used one? Any special tips to win the bid in ebay.com, specially when somebody is doing automatic bidding. I tried yesterday to bid for 'Blue Raincoat' LP at the last 10 minutes of the bid ending time, but due to automatic bidding by somebody I could not succeed.

Hey Amit

I guess the trick is to use a "sniping" software on eBay, which is what a lot of these guys use. I guess alternatively you could wait to place your bet towards the last couple of minutes as well. That's what I usually do!

I'm spinning Joss Stone's The Soul Sessions. The immediacy and palpability of her voice on this recording makes it a very swell sounding album, making it feel almost like she's in the room (yeah, that sounds rehashed and cliched but it does really feel that way). It's no 180 g record but one of the best I have.

PS: ebay sniping zindabad!

Folks - this is a cool thread! Getting to know a little bit good sounding vinyl albums, different kinds of pressings etc...! Just curious about one thing - is the quality of vinyls released today that good to justify a TT purchase or resurrect an old HMV TT? Could be that Vinyls have a greater dynamic range and sound warm but badly pressed Vinyls are as "good' as badly cut CDs. What do you think? I am just trying to understand the whole Vinyl resurgence thingy here! Rock on.

There is already a huge pool of old vinyl being sold by professional sellers in most of the bigger cities in India, waiting to be bought. And depending on your luck, you can get some really good titles. It goes without saying that you can get some really crappy ones as well, the condition and looks of the records notwithstanding. I have many such lemons - nice shiny record, sleeve and cover in good condition but lots of hisses and pops. But then you get lousy records even on CDs.

In my experience, new releases are not necessarily superior to old ones.

Why don't you look for a reliable Japanese direct drive from the 80s in good working and cosmetic condition to begin with? I know little about the HMVs so can't comment.

Amit,

Bidding on 'Famous Blue Raincoat' is tough, because it's always in demand, and prices tend to be high.

A snipe bid is useful when the auction ends at an inconvenient time for us in India - most US eBay auctions are like that. It rarely helps, though, if you've got somebody else doing automated incremental bidding. Fortunately, there are only a few such punters.

If you're in a bidding war and all the other bidders are geared down to the last 15 seconds or so, it's advisable to make your final bid as high as you are prepared to pay, rather than the basic incremental value. The winner of such auctions are always several notches higher than the previous high price.

Best of all is to avoid the 'popular' titles and search out those obscure gems that are musically important to you but not 'collectable' or rare. I've filled in plenty of holes in my collection in auctions where I was the sole bidder, at the start price.

regards,

Sigur Ros - Takk (200g DMM)

These days most of my vinyl listening is western classical (still grappling with the complexities and slowly learning the ropes). Picked up an armful today from Sushil Anand (Nova Audio). Most are Melodiya (USSR) pressings. Right now I am spinning David Oistrakh (violin) and Svyatoslav Richter (piano) playing Brahms Sonata No 2 and Prokofiev Sonata No 1.

Good thing Mr Sushil Anand has put to very good use his VPI record cleaning machine. All records I picked up are in shining condition (though all are used records). I have rarely bought used records in such uniformly good condition. He's also helpfully given a good plastic record sleeve. Highly Recommended.

FYI: He also stocks both new and used records in other genres.

Bonus: met G401fan at the shop and had a good chat with him.

Meola, Mclaughlin & Lucia - Friday Night In San Francisco (2lp - 45 rpm)

Wonderful record. A "reference" record for me. I have the 33.

BTW, Shakti did a similar album called "Saturday Night in Bombay". I have only CD. Glorious sounding live album recorded at Rang Bhavan (sadly no longer a performance avenue due to environmental extremists) and Shanmukhananda Hall.

"Saturday Night in Bombay" is one of my favourite album. Would love to pick that one on vinyl any day if it's released.

Making Music by Zakir Hussain (and John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek and Hariprasad Chaurasia) is another album I would love to have on LP/45. I have the Verve CD and the sonics is excellent. My only complaint on this album is that McLaughlin's contribution is rather less.

Spinning:
1) Melody Gardot's My One And Only Thrill
2) Sviatoslav Richter with the Leningrad State Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky Concerto No 1 for Piano and Orchestra in B-Flat Minor No 23 (what a mouthful!)

Just picked up the amazing Bob Dylan Mono Vinyl Boxset from Rhythm House. It was numbered, limited edition. Surprisingly, buying it in India was 2k cheaper than america, and about 8k cheaper than UK! What a deal! I am SO glad I bought it :D

Being a die hard Dylan fan, I already had all his albums but these are just amazing. The RTI pressing, the attention to detail in creating the replica sleeves and the whole package is just top quality. I compared the sound of my Blonde on Blonde original mono with the box version, and they were very similar sounding. In fact, besides a couple of original pressings, I might just sell off my other Dylan records coz this box set is all I need!!

This is one of the best fusion album for me. I had this album recorded on a chrome tape and again bought it on cd when it was released in India. If i am not mistaken this album is on ECM and not Verve. I am eagerly waiting for this album to re-release in vinyl.
