Yamaha AVR owners thread

Hello ,
Need advise in buying a Yamaha receiver . Have Fronts , centre and surrounds . Saw some good deals on Dolby Atmos speakers too. Have yet to get a receiver .
BD player : Got a streaming player by Sony . Black Friday deal.
Am contemplating of getting Yamaha TSR 7810 . The AVR ticks all the right boxes with DCPH 2.2 / Dolby Atmos etc at a good price at Costco . Did not see any reviews on Hifi Vision . Can anyone guide if its a good buy especially considering the price < $500 and features. Its got pre outs too !

Thanks

It is not an Indian model. That's why no mention in hifivision. This TSR series seems to be positioned above rxv series. Going by Yamaha pedigree and specs mentioned, should be a good one.

Hello @ Dr Rocket,
Thanks for your inputs . Have seen some reviews on AVS forum . Am not sure if am allowed to post the link here . Its pretty good as per most reviewers .

This unit is available with 2 web vendors - Accessories4less and Costco . Incidentally Costco lowered the price to match Accessories4less (is official vendor selling refurb items) . Have made the purchase for new unit thro Costco @ $399 + tax .

Will update with impressions .
Thanks ,

Hello All, i bought Yamaha Rxv 681 from Us. That is 120V. But unfortunately I bought a 110V maxine stepdown transformer.

Will this combo work at all? Is it dangerous to use 120v avr with 110v transformer??

Should I return my 110V transformer and buy a 120V one?

I searched online and found many 110V transformers. But couldn't find 120v transformers. Please suggest and ideas...

Thanks & Regards
Chaitanya

Hello Chaitanya,

I believe you should be ok with 110 v . Donot anticipate problems . However since your receiver seems to be a US model , the listed voltage is 120 v , 60 Hz .

Have checked power supply for US model Preeti mixer which we are using , its 550 W - It says 110 v .
Checked Gandhi appliances which caters for India / US electronics and has 110v/220 V step up/Dn transformers for buyers wanting to take appliances from US to India . Here is the link - http://gandhiappliances.com/shop/11...nvertingbox™-1000-watts-premium-step-up-down/

Thanks,

Thank you Naj, thats a relief. My brother have come back to India. So if i buy a transformer i have to buy in Hyderabad.

Its intresting to know Gandhi electronis in us.

How ever, i have a new maxine 110v transformer. Its 1.5kva.

Since i bought avr to india, warranty is lost. So im worried about using 110v transformer. Thanks for all the inputs !!!

Hello yamaha owners.
I own rx v681. While it has an app of its own I was wondering if I can integrate it with google home as part of my iot. While I can achieve switching on and off using smart switch I am wondering how can I control the avr. Aspects like volume, source etc are something I am looking at.
Has anyone ever done this and can share his experience?
Thanks
Parambir

Hey Parambir, Im sorry this is not an answer to your question..... but im just checking if you can help. IS your rx v681 an indian model?
Or .... you got it from us? If it is from Us, did you use a 110V transformer or a 120BV transformer ??

(As I said in my above comments, I got the Rxv 681 from us. It is 120V model. But unfortunately I bought a 110V transformer.
I am just checking if this works at all ..... )

Yes. I got mine from Canada. It is 110V. You can connect 110v transformer to it. Just make sure that the transformer is rated at 1000w. This will make sure that you get that extra current when you crank up. Also indian transformers might not be very efficient as rated. 1000w will deliver Atleast 900 is my assumption. I am using 1000w MX brand which is excellent. Available on amazon. Hope this helps. .. Hope someone gives me a solution too...

thank you parambir....

Actually I bought 1.5Kva transformer. So it is surely sufficient for my 400W avr.
https://www.flipkart.com/maxine-1-5...erican-products-100-copper/p/itmexm5baw9h7bnd

But only issue is the voltage. My avr is 120V and the transformer is 110V. Just checking if made a wrong combination. (in terms of voltage)
Don't worry about that. Give it a shot. And yes one more advice. Clearly mark on the plug as 110V. You don't want anyone in your absence plug it in 230v. Good luck. share your experience

Hello Chaitanya,

Just for info : The Output voltage of the transformer ( whether step DN or step UP ) is represented by the following equation :
trans2.gif

P is primary and S is secondary .
In this case, the no of turns is the same . So the step down will depend upon the input voltage . If you input 240v then out put will be 120v and so on .

Thanks,

Hello Naj, .... now i understood. Thank you very much for the formula. Its almost like directly praportional. Il check the voltage with multimeter.

Hello ,

So I am officially a Yamaha owner with purchase of TSR 7810 , 7.2 Chanel receiver.

Details and specs are at the following Yamaha Website : https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/tsr-7810/index.html

Background: I have 2 excellent 2.1 / stereo systems 1) One with Emotiva gear - DAC, PRE Amp and 2 Nos 1000 W mono blocks and PSA subwoofer + Tekton Pendragon speakers .

2) An all tube 2.0 system - Yaqin tube integrated amp 80 W and a Yaqin Tube buffer bet source and the integrated amp + Tekton M Lore Speakers . Modest budget system but sounds great and can apply all the audiophile jargon to describe the listening experience.

Initially when we started with the Emotiva 2.1 system, the intention was to expand it to a HT and also purchased a 5 ch , 200W/Ch power amp ( which is lying unused) .

The only item remaining was a AV pre amp . AV pre amp receivers considered: Emotiva - 2 models and Nuforce - AVP -18 . All of them are shy in features compared to those found on commercial AVR’s

Had been for a while following on a Marantz AV pre Amp for the last year but is not around anymore .

Is there a Need: Although we like to see movies, but are not die hard movie buffs and the need for an HT was not really there. The 2 ch system was more than adequate however same could not be part of a HT due to WAF. The Pendragons are huge , standing 54 inches tall and along with the power amps will lose big living room real estate .
Now watching a movie with the family with pop corn and jumping at the scary moments is priceless. And lately when we saw Bahuballi 1 and 2 on sling TV , felt a modest HT in the living Room can do the trick . More so, there are many Blue ray rentals like Family Video and Kiosks at Walmart etc to take advantage off.

A thought many enthusiasts endorse : A good dedicated 2 Ch system for music and an average HTIB with receiver for movies does the trick . Concur on this & decided to follow suit .

So with this in mind and with quick approval from the wife , the living room can now have small HT .

The Search : The theme was Cost Vs features . I have a bias for Marantz .

One major advantage with going with the commercial AVR's is the tech that is provided . The TSR 7810 was by far the best option amongst what was available and at a great price . $399 + tax . Great Cost Vs Features and AVS forum has good reviews and satisfied users.

The Set up :

-Fronts : Polk T15 bookshelves as fronts (spare laying around) , decided to make a HT around these. $100 in 2013 .

-Center Speaker : Polk T30 Center speaker : Best buy - $64+ Tax *- Arrived and in use .

-SUBWOOFER : Klipsch SW R-12SW : B and H - $ 224 *– Shipped, yet to Arrive.

Atmos speakers: Searching .Like the inbuilt Front and Atmos speakers. May be next Black Friday as the prices have doubled now.

Surround speakers: Searching .

Blue Ray Player : Sony budget streaming player- $ 49 + Tax *.

Television source : Dell Desktop PC for TV - USE Sling TV for Indian television .

DAC- Emotiva PT- 100. Connected to the Dell Desktop.

Television : LG UHD, 4k , 60 Inch .

Cables : Amazon basics. Affordable and good quality.
*Note : All the above prices are black Friday ones and the costs have been revised now .
Last weekend , set up and connected the receiver.

TSR 7810 : Limited time trial . Below are initial impressions:

Packaging:Came in a single card board box but was wrapped with plastic cover. Usual Styrofoam packing with bubble wrap.

Accessories - YPAO microphone , FM/AM antenna, Remote with batteries, no user manual .

Yamaha Cast : Easy setup but initially struggled as the user manual is available on line only . But figured it out. Like the facility of naming rooms and you can also take pics of the same. Used WPS on the WI-Fi router for the first time

Internet Radio: Good choice of preset stations and can listen to Internet radios from a list of stations around the world. Can also add additional stations.

HDMI Switching : Yes there is a delay. To a point you feel something is wrong.

HDMI Pass through:This is new feature learnt. With the receiver powered off/ Standby mode, the receiver will allow HDMI from the last source played to connect to the TV .

HDMI ARC : Complicated. Struggling to set this up . Will update.

VIDEO Normal viewing: Upscaling: Sling TV thro Dell PC connected via HDMI : Found enhanced clarity . CNN is as is great, but now through the receiver looked even better.

Sonic performance: With Output set to 7.2 CH and with the Polk Bookshelves + Center speaker :

For TV : The performance is average when compared to stock output from LG TV. In fact LG is better at times with its built in sub and sound optimization.

For Music Played thro DAC : This where the things get interesting. The Bookshelves + Center spkr provide an interesting listening experience, to a point, say enjoyable. Chevelle’s “Envy” and MJ’s “Beat it” sounded clear and detailed . One could hear the between quick breaths etc. Can’t complain.

For Music Played thro USB : MP3’s- Not good .

For Music played thro Internet radio : Similar to that played thro DAC . Quite enjoyable.

Awaiting to rent a BD and check the receiver’s full potential. Will update in the coming days as we discover the receiver more . Some pictures attached.

Thanks,

your setup looks ice naj..... My brother used his 5.1 setup in an open hall like yours. He always complained about missing clarity, trebles, bass etc.
Once he moved his entire setup to a smaller closed room, there is a huge improvement in audio quality.

Just to update you guys....

I spoke to MAXIM company. They said the 120V avr will work without any problem with a 110V transformer.
(im not sure if there will be any effect on audio quality)
The ratio of step down is 2:1 (Naj, your explanation is right)
If the input is 240v, the output will be 120V
If the input is 220V, the output will be 110v.

Chaitanya

Great buy. Costco has a lot of power to influence the manufacturers. They made Yamaha make a model equivalent to rxv781 which retailed for 850. It is a great buy with Costco's excellent return policy and customer service. There is no other receiver which has pre outs at this price point.

I get higher than usual voltage at my home. The output in my transformer was 125 v but, I plugged in my 120v receiver and it is working fine. These transformers are 2:1. Most cities in India get around 230V. So, you will at least get 115 v.

Hi,

I am using RX V681 AVR along with BOSE AM 10 5.1(Near to Screen) + BOSE AM 5 2.1 (at rear, seating position) speaker systems. When I watch movies, dialogues are not coming clearly. Its very hard to actually follow/understand the dialogues. It is completely new product to me as its 1 week old and I dont know how to optimise the sound according to our home theatre room. Although I experimented with Bass, Treble, different sound effects etc but still not getting clear dialogues.

I heard from a Yamaha guy that calibration may damage the instruments. Is it true?

Which instruments? What a load of nonsense? What is the use of the calibration in the receiver according to that Yamaha guy? I would first of all calibrate, then worry about other things. Calibration works very well, especially for beginners.
Most of the times, lack of clarity of speech is due to too much bass or too muddy bass. So, first calibrate it and then come back and tell us what is the situation. Most likely, the volume levels on your subwoofer are too high.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
