LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

How do I check the firmware version, if the installation guys dont carry a service remote?

Now coming to my side of the story, i got my software update done yesterday evening, LG never called me so i had to threaten them ... ONCE AGAIN of dire consequences, and the next day i had a service engineer who knew nothing about software updates visiting my home, i got rid of him and didn't let him touch the display since i already had it replaced 4 times and this one was a flawless display no speck of dust no uniformity issue ... nothing at all ... TOUCH WOOD. So I called them and told LG not to send such people or i will not let them touch the display, so yesterday an engineer who knew what he was doing came and installed the new firmware, i asked him to get into the service menu and show me the version of the software, so it is confirmed from my side that the version now on my display is 3.28.

Now coming to the differences, I Didn't notice any difference at all, the green pixels are still there at level 57 of brightness as before, there aren't any features added neither are there any features deleted from the menu, PQ is still damn awesome and i haven't noticed a single thing different in my display, it probably was a futile exercise just to close doors on people like me who were making a lot of hu hallah about it.

He will Call you before coming In, so make it a point to tell him to bring his service remote, if he says otherwise then talk to his senior or plainly tell him that there is no need to come then and forward a complaint to Lg immediately. Interestingly all the service guys have a job sheet and if you don't like the service you can write it down on that sheet and it is bound to get to LG, so they will pretty much oblige cos their job is on the line. Knowledge is power so you have to use this power to get stuff done.

Well a senior engineer came and checked out my TV. Yesterday 2 junior engineers came and opened up the set, and it was interesting to see the insides. The guy looked at it, and told me in that 4 days time (max) it would be replaced. No questions asked.

Well at least you have to hand it out to LG, that they offer to replace at a drop of a hat, instead of some other companies, who would make you wait a month while your product is going thru repairs.

Mannu, are you still using the plasma breakin slideshow? Should I do that when the replacement comes.

First off i think the product should be in perfect pristine condition from the first day and there should be no reason to run around these freak shows, and i don't agree with getting slapped in the face and then getting apologies for the same, that just doesn't cut with me, i expect the equipment to be perfect considering the amount of hard earned money that i am paying for it, i will hand it down to any company that tries to BS me, and i don't care what kind of service they are running, i Will make them run for their frigging lives if i have to.

well i haven't used the slide to break the new display in, since i don't see a point for it as i won't be calibrating this set in the near future, cos of very obvious reasons. it's really upto you if you want to run those slides, but i have watched TV, played games with no HUDS for hours at stretch, watched movies which covered the screen fully on this display from the first hour, and i don't have 1 iota of difference from the other one i broke In with slides, so It's your wish in the end. just keep the setting below 50, that is a very important precaution.

Good point ! I agree !

Finally I have decided. I am going to purchase 50pk550.
Anybody from pune wants to join me for group purchase?
Sid has assured me to assist us to get good bargain.
Of course it is not necessary that everybody should buy this model.
I think even if we purchase 2-3 different models from same shop at same time we can get good rates.
If moderators allow, can I start new thread for group purchase in Pune in television section.

hey nthaker was also planning a group buy contact him he knows few dealers in mumbai who can get the piece for 55k ....

Thats pretty much the design these days...all SOC based, there's no question of repair anymore. If something conks out, they have to replace the whole sub board.

Thanks a lot. I was expecting big fans and there is none. This explains its so silent functioning. Nice design.

@vivek: does it make sense to buy in Mumbai - I think prices are considerably lower there even for non corporate sales.

I think its better to buy extended warranty on these plasmas....

Yes. You are right. I checked with LG customer care. They charge Rs.7000 + tax for 1 year extended warranty. We can get up to 5 year extended warranty. Discount upto 20% if purchased at a time. But it is not clear that which things they will cover in extended warranty. Will it be same as normal warranty?

7000 for one year, that is quite steep, i insured everything last month, almost 3lakh worth electronics/ appliances and total value of around 4.5lakhs and it cost me 4k/year including breakdown, burglary, fire ,lightning etc

Does insurance cover non-warranty repair charges? Can we extend warranty of Samsung Plasma TVs?
