LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

Dhananjay,

How you connected your Blueray player to the TV? Is it through HDMI? When you press ok(the big center button) what is the resolution displayed? Please post the pictures if you can.

But when i watch any HD content i could see spots(like measles) on the characters faces or for that matter on any light coloured surface

By spots, do you mean the blinking of sub-pixels, green prominently? Is yes, whats the brightness? Check whether reducing brightness makes anything good.
Also do you see when viewed from distance greater than 6 ft(regular viewing distance) Or is it seen only on close range?

The HD content was the BR given free with the sony BD player and BD rips of 720p quality..

Is it the "This is it" BR? It looked bad on the Sony LCD itself. Because most of its content are upscaled version and not shot in HD.
For other BDRips, check whether the source is proper, i.e. it plays well on your PC without any artifact.

Heh I though he was referring to actual measles and skin blemishes on the actor's face. HD can bring about so many details. I hope they start HD broadcast of FTV soon ;)

LG technician finally visited today. Sorry for the late post but I was waiting for this visit. Last time they sent a guy for wall mounting by mistake...

I showed him the dancing green pixels and he immediately said that the panel will have to be replaced.

I asked him to check for the firmware update and PCB change possibilities. He said that a PCB change basically means a panel change and not just some individual circuitry.

He will confirm this in 2 days and I have taken down his number and will be sure to follow up relentlessly.

Also, someone asked about PS3 games on the TV. Sadly, my only point of comparison is my old 29" shitty CRT so I'm not sure how this compares to other similar plasmas. For me its absolutely fantastic. Ill try and get some pics up soon.

A basic question since I am planning to buy the set:
Does anyone know if the new sets that one would get if the order is placed now have the green dancing pixels issue fixed or would I need to get the firmware update (a la Shaiju and others) / get the panel changed (as per LG tech's response to Spyral)?

.

Bro..you might wanna rethink the "replacement" part...as of now chances of availability of PK550 stocks is as remote as getting a date with Priyanka Chopra

Common guys FOCUS :D!!!!!!!!! we need some serious update from nikhil and Shaiju or else I may end up buying Pana(neo PDP - plasma deepika padukone) ...

Look the green pixel dancing problem as far as I'm concerned is a non issue. Look at this

YouTube - Dithering on 60PK550

and this was on a 60PK550.. which is a korean cbk. Yea we shouldve got those calibration features to inc/dec color ire points. But if the LG technician advised to replace TV only due to this, then he deserves to get sacked. What a prized nincompoop

Someone needs to show this to LG technicians and instead of replacing so many sets they should simply enable the expert settings menu.......to begin with.

Sigh true man...because of idiots like them, customers with valid problems, awaiting replacements (I've got a dead panel) have to wait and suffer since there are no stocks

Yesterday my friend got his PK550 delivered(almost after a month of waiting) which was an August make. I put the dark knight slide which has dark black background. And as soon as I bumped the brightness past 53, the sub pixels did start dancing just like my TV. I cannot confirm whether the TV had a new firmware or not. Also I dont remember in which mode I tried this. Because Srinivas here had confirmed that even with new firmware, the behavior exists in all pic mode except "Cinema". I could have possibly tried in Vivid and hence could see the behavior.

That said, I would let new owners here confirm it.

Which city do you and your friend reside in? My Panel had a Aug 10 mfgn date, same problem. Basically the Green Color IRE setting needs to be reduced by 2 points, and hopefully the pixel problem will go away. Can a service remote do this?

Got the TV from Mangalore, Karnataka.

I didn't check with other settings and also didn't have access to service remote.

As Shaiju has updated, this is likely to be solved by tweaking through service menu and some hardware adjustments.

I had finalized to buy 50pk550.
Today I came across some threads stating-
There is no need to buy 50 inch full HD TV if viewing distance is more than 6 feet.
My viewing distance is 14 feet.
Budget- 50 to 80k
Is there any HD ready but larger than 50 inch plasma TV in this budget?
Or should I save some money and buy 720p 50 inch plasma?
As there will no difference in 720p and 1080p at viewing distance of 14 feet.

Yes, of course i connected it with the HDMI cable and the resolution displayed is 1080p/24....i think thats good enough or is it????.....

Not green sub-pixels....brightness was 70 i think... i reduced it to 50 and then it got subdued whwn watched at a range of 10 feet. But only little.

It was 'The Legion' provided with the Sony bdp. i dont even wanna check 'This is it'

How much i wish this to be true:ohyeah::p

Measles like face??!!,you are creating butterflies in the stomach:mad:,I was planning for an LG tv

Hey...dont get so nervous...i bought it even after reading about all this here...and i still dont regret it.

Just to double check and peace of mind, I visited LG Shoppe to verify the green pixel problem on the step down PJ series. Surprisingly the 50PJ560 had no such issues at all. Not even a speck of green pixel problem.

If the problem is specific to full HD models then I think LG should revisit its 1080p Plasma strategy. Every time I call Rohit Pandit he has one simple answer - "You are the only consumer facing this issue". How convenient for a business head to brush of a very well known problem.

Having said that I will admit that LG has been sending engineers to resolve the problem. However, the PK550 is a monumental handicap without advanced calibration. The engineers themselves struggle. I seriously doubt that they will incorporate the internal and service menu changes to other PK550s. Even with current adjustments to my display there is room for improvement.

Some really dumb-stupid at LG made a single bad decision and caused all this trouble.

Hope the LG top brass is reading this thread.
