onkyo hts 3300

HEY raj,
the 5300 can definitely be used as a 5.1 system, just dont use the side suround speakers. Even better, I am sure the 5300 has zone 2 capabilities, so you can basically use 2 speakers in some other room for music or so, at the same time u still have 5.1 for movies. As for what anyone else tells i dont know but the receiver on 3300 surely plays hd audio via hdmi. unless u have a really big room say beyond 20x20 ft u shouldnt be looking beyond the 3300. cheers.

Thanks Crook! Quite useful information. I feel 5.1 should be sufficient for me./ My room is sort of L shaped and the viewing distance is around 12 ft for this I feel 5.1 and around 120W speakers should be sufficient. So I feel I should go for 3300. What do you say?

BTW, do you know the difference between DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio? Which is better?

Thank you once again :)

Hi Folks,

I'm new to this forum. Bought a HT-S3300 and installed it. I do not have enough HDMI cables to connect my DVD and WD TV Live players. However, I tried connecting my Tata Sky (non HD) DTH via RCA composite. The connections are the following:

1. composite video (yellow) direct to TV
2. composite stereo audio (red & white) to the analog stereo inputs of the receiver

The following is the problem:

I get no sound at all - tried FM, AUX input none worked.

Please help me to get things right ASAP. I'm kinda desperate to use the system.

Help me guys! Please....

hey i have made the same connections , and its working fine...

I have put the L/R analog audio RCA cables from my tatasky under CBL/SAT option on the receiver and not the TV/CD option ... Video port is vacant on receiver's CBL/SAT panel as video is given directly to TV ...

Hi all,
I have a Sony DVP NS 728 with HDMI & optical digital out. Will this suffice to onkyo 3300 which I am planning to buy?
Pl help me out.

Make sure you have made speakers connections right.
The speaker connections should be exactly the way its mentioned in page 13 of the manual under the box "Speakers A"

Next Speaker "A" should be selected in the AVR as mentioned in page 22 of the manual

Next connect your Audio part (Red & White) of the RCA cable to "TV/CD" among the analog inputs (group 3) at the back of HT-S3300.

Then as explained in page 31 of the manual, on HT-S3300 Remote, Press RECEIVER followed by SETUP.
Select "Digital Audio", then "TV/CD". Change it to "-----" (no selection)

Now on remote select "TV/CD" to get audio from Tata Sky Box.

You can connect the (Red & White) RCA to any other analog input (GAME, CBL/SAT, VCR/DVD, BD/DVD) in HT-S3300, but then you will have to change that exact selection under "Digital Audio" to "-----" (no selection) and then on the remote select that option to get audio from Tata Sky Box.

For example if (Red & White) RCA is connected to "CBL/SAT" analog input in HT-S3300, then under "Digital Audio", "CBL/SAT" should be changed to "-----" (no selection), and then on remote you will have to select "CBL/SAT" when you want to hear audio from Tata Sky Box.

I have read in many forums that the sub-woofer is passive and not that great. Its good, but could have done with powered sub-woofer. My question is can the HTS3300 be coupled with lets say a Z680/Z5500 sub-woofer without using logitech's rest of the speakers? So experts, please shed some light on whether this is even possible :(

can anyone please help on this?

Thanks for all the responses guys. I have come to the conclusion that the issue is either extremely trivial (not obvious to me) or the hardware is broken. I have requested a person from the store where I bought the unit from to come around to help me out. He should be in sometime from now. I will post the results.

Thanks again for all the help from you guys. I really appreciate it!!

What I suggest is .... the only reason people hesitate about the 3300 is because of its passive sub. Well let me tell u that its plenty loud and packs a punch( i am sure u will turn down the volume when u realize that). About dolby and DTS MA .. these are high def codecs for audio with bitrates around 25 mbps. So sound is replicated as it is recorded in the studio. I reckon DTS MA has a higher bitrate and hence better quality over Dolby THD (which is also good nonetheless). So I would suggest take the leap and enjoy true movie experience right at home. TC CHEERS!

Since there is no pre-out for SUB in 3300, it won't be possible.
Thanks vasishta. But still have a doubt. I necessarily dont need a pre-out for sub. But is there a audio out option that I can use as input source to the Z680 and couple its sub along with 3300 (as if 2 speaker systems running in parallel)?

One more question that I have is I was planning to use HDMI with audio return channel so that I dont have to plugin the optical out from my STB? Will this work or do I still need to have optical out coming from my STB into the 3300? I know that it will work for a BDplayer, but not sure about the STB(Airtel HD).

You don't need optical cable from STB to 3300.. HDMI is enough..

Thanks once again Crook! :) The link you sent is truely awesome! Answered my many questions! :) :clapping:

Do you know by chance any link which also lists the differeces/pros/cons of active and passive sub woofer? As I am a newbie in this area, I would like to understand what both active and passive subwoofers offer/do not offer. Thank you!

A passive subwoofer contains only a woofer in an enclosure with no amplification. An active subwoofer contains an on-board amplifier that will accept a low-level input and usually contains electronic crossovers. A passive subwoofer must be powered by an external amplifier and connected via speaker-level connection. Many times this passive subwoofer contains a built-in passive crossover that sends the bass to the subwoofer driver and passes the higher frequencies to the satellite speakers. This methodology is inherently difficult to implement and will usually result in very poor integration between the woofer and the satellites. Using an active subwoofer system will almost always provide superior results due to the greater control in matching output levels and matching the crossover point between the subwoofer and satellites.

Adding to the comment above....
Part of the review by an amazon user :
"Some have inquired about the subwoofer which is passive (not self powered) and also about active subwoofers. The passive subwoofer supplied with the 3300 is, in my opinion, plenty strong. I did a bit more research into this and there appears to be a 50/50 split. I reviewed opinions etc., and weeding out the comments that try to be expert but only provide one line responses it appears that there are pluses and minuses for each. Again, it is subjective and boils down to your personal preference. I also called Onkyo tech support to inquire about future upgrades for the 3300 and the pleasant gentleman responded that if I wanted to upgrade the subwoofer I would probably need to purchase a new system. I am ok with that because he also reminded me this an entry level system. Entry level or not, the 3300 is plenty powerful for my needs but please share your comments to help others decide on possibly the 3300, 5300 or other type system. Try not to get too caught up in the ongoing, neverending debate. Go with what you like...not matter what your ears will love you for it. ":clapping:

And morover i have even heard some people on this forum pointing out that the 3300's passive sub outperforms some yamaha active sub . As you have mentioned a 12 ft viewing distance the passive sub will be more than enough, that is unless ur a bass freak and you dont have unfriendly neighbours. TC Cheers!!

Great info! Thanks once again :)

I enquired in a store here in Bangalore and he is ready to give it around at 23K (exact price to worked out during purchase). He also told that passive subwoofer should be sufficient for me as mine is an apartment (will not able to use it at full volume) and viewing distance is around 10ft. Since he did not have demo piece at that time, he asked me come back again in two days to check it out. I am planning to take my Iomega Screenplay Director media player along with me and play the movies I stored in it for my satisfaction and then place a order. What say?
