onkyo hts 3300

I got HTS-3300 Yesterday from Modern World, Costed me 24,990. He refused to budge :P

In any case, I had a go at HTS-3501 ( Or was it 3505? ). I liked the bass in that better. But that is another 5k away, and Im already streched! Plus I wanted Audio Via HDMI.

I will be putting up Unpacking pics and final setup pics here soon.

I also got a pair of speaker stands (height adjustable, and with path for cable) for 1.5k and HDMI cable of "NT" brand for 700 bucks.

Checked avatar blu-ray a bit, sounds good! But I loved the speakers, when I played uncharted2 on DTS! You can easily locate where the bullets are coming from.

Lastly, I noticed that Onkyo's sub is not very tight. My previous make-shift audio duty was done by ATP-3, and as some of you know, it has one of the best subs for their money. Also, it has something to do with the fact that ATP-3 was sealed and Onkyo has a ported one.

Just one question, this is not directly related to HTS3300, Does anyone have any idea on how prevent PS3 from decoding the audio for Blu Ray rips with AC-3 soundtrack?
I would like my Onkyo to decode the DD5.1 which is on some of the movies I have.

If anyone is interested in Bangalore, Modern World has imported about 20 boxes this month. There are plenty available :)

Thanks for the update..i will be going for the 3300 as well. Can you please tell me where did you get the speaker stands from? Is it 1.5k for 2 stands?

Purchased Onkyo HTS-3300 from RMall Mulund.
Packaged with Philips DVD Player 3356 with HDMI support.
it cost me 26.5 K setup included.

hi all,

sorry for interruption. Where is the link to "start a new thread". Am I overlooking ??If not, Moderators should "highlight" one link in the menu/homepage.

Pair of Speaker Stands. They are height adjustable, has a channel for wire. I got it from Modern World. They said original Onkyo Stands are 5k a pair, and not in stock. Stands are quite decent.

Will update this thread with pics of the stand and unboxing of HTS3300 tonight or tomorrow. I still need to hear some content via HT to form a complete opinion on the unit!

Some initial thoughts are :
* Woofer is a bit boomy, will need to locate woofer properly to see if helps ( I think this is a common issue with ported subs, if not located properly).
* Center, sides and surrounds are quite decent. Most of us will appreciate.
* This is my first AVR, and I was a bit confused initially, hence I was unable to hear much, since I was struggling to get everything to work. This is a big remark, since, I'm considered to be the "Universal operator" who normally figures out all the gadgets, and troubleshoot every electronic device in the family, sometime over the phone, with devices I have never seen before.
* Not designed for Music. It take all of 20 seconds of listening to figure that out! I guess, one can connect good 2 channel speakers on "Speaker B" for that.
* Remote is not very intuitive.
* Options overload, I love it!
* Finish on speaker are absolutely wonderful, thought Woofer could have looked better ( The other woofer I have is of Altec Lansing's ATP-3, which has a beautiful shape).
* If you are using HDMI, you can bypass the AVR and let the audio and video reach TV directly (HDMI pass-through will light up).

One thing I forgot to mention was, Mordern world has a decent Listening room, with proper acoustic treatment for the rooms. But, the speakers placements are not ideal. But quite understandable, given the fact that they have to cram so many speakers there.

I always audition the units with "Kill Bill 2" , japanese assasin vs Uma Thurman fight (Sorry I forgot the character names, Watched this awesome movie a long time back :) ). Lots of dynamic audio, with silence and lots of surround sounds and healthy dose of woofer workout. I avoid scenes with too much of rumble, like the scene from Transporter, since Bass will overpower everything.

@allajunaki - Did you check with Modern world if they can provide upgrade on speakers? I am hesitant to buy this unit because its not good for music.

Nope, since music is not priority for me.
Secondly, if you want Music, you can always hook up bookshelves via 'Speaker B' and use that for music.

Thats good..yes power is required (although it less as the system is in STANDBY) ,
passthrough is necessary sometime , for example watching 'Tata SKY' non-HD channels with TV Sounds

ATp3, meet your replacement. You have served me well during my college years. Time for me to move on...

All plugged in, TS+ via Coax being played. I need to reposition my Amp to a better location!

Center Channel + The reciever.

Surrounds on speaker stand.

Thats all for now folks!

Forgot to add :
Yesterday, after plugging in Tata Sky+ to AVR via Coax, when I powered on my Amp, the amber light of "HDMI-Passthrough" kept blinking. The unit did not turn on!
At first I thought the power protection tripped. So, I checked all the wiring, disconnected all the HDMI cables, and coax and tried turning on the Amp. Nope, no luck. Moreover, the power protection is blinking standby light. "Maybe the AVR forgot which one was it supposed to blink", I thought.
So left it disconnected for a good half hour, and reconnected everything, and presto! everything started working again.

Another interesting thing, coming from a non-AVR background.
* I was rather surprised with the Loud "Click" sound that AVR makes, whenever it turns on (Actually 2), and the click whenever we turn on Dolby modes or DTS modes (Perhaps, turning on the processor chips). Its good to hear the reassuring relay switches, which is a throwback on all the electronic noisless switches present in various regular Cosumer electronics.
Interestingly, the same click noise is heard from TV, while switching on. Also by Stabilizers.
