onkyo hts 3300

@allajunaki...do you know if theres a wireless option for the rear speakers?

I don' think so.
I had an issue with that, since the room layout is such that, we have to have the wires come through the middle of the living room. So I just wired it that way and carpeted the hall ;)
Right now, the carpet is not big enough to cover from Sofa to the AV stand. Plans are underway for the same.

But aren't you seriously compromising on the quality?
Since the rear channels are now coming off another amp, and not from Onkyo.
Besides Rocketfish reciever amp has only 25w x 2. which is kind of weak for speakers we get with 3300.
That said, these guys seems to be recommending it for surrounds extension.

What are the dimensions of the box?

Visited a chain of stores in MGF Metropolitan Mall Gurgaon yesterday.

Demo-ed Onkyo HTS 3300, Yamaha YHT 292 and Bose 3.2.1

To my novice ears both Onkyo and Yamaha sounded similar. Somehow felt the bass factor was higher in onkyo (not even sure if that was good or bad).

Both of these support HDMI in and out.

Prices quoted - YHT 292 28K incl instalaltion and wiring, onkyo 3300 27k incl wires and installation.

Finally demoed bose which had mightly impressed me last time. They played a standard clip from Cars and then Iron Man. Even after the demo got over, I was still waiting that the next scene is where they would be having the sound effects coming in. To my surprise, there was nothing that could impress me in terms of sound! - just pure personal opinions!

BTW friends any opinions on Onkyo 3300 vs YHT 292? I am slightly hesistant in going for amix and match setup.

Hi guys,
I have solved the "Boomy" woofer issue of Onkyo 3300.
Make sure u get the following settings :
Audessy : OFF
Speakers Config -> all to Large, crossover at 80Hz, double Bass: ON.

This may be upto personal preference :
Speaker Level : all at 0, except Center : -4db, Sub : +4db
A/V sync Delay : 60-70ms (!!) for my LG 42PQ60

This way, the whole setup becomes a lot tighter, and sounds nicer.
I always disliked a cross over of over 100Hz. They tend to make things very boomy and bad.
And for some reason, turning on Audessy makes the speakers sound retarded. Somehow, they make the speakers sound muddy, and sub becomes blunt. They HAVE NOT tuned their AV receiver to their speakers.

I do not know why, they default the speaker size to small, the satellites are full range speakers. And they can do higher frequency bass, which is directional in nature.

If you still find BASS to be very boomy, then you need to relocate your sub.

Another point worth noting, when the sub is pushed, it moves around! I have put a small doormat under the sub, from creating a rattle when the whole thing jumps. They should have made the sub heavier.

First of all, I am glad that there is a forum for onkyo hts 3300 especially in India.

Thanks a lot to all of them who have posted abundant information here.

I am finally convinced and have decided to buy the onkyo hts 3300 this weekend. I was in a fix with Denon and Onkyo but after reading all the posts I think its better to go with onkyo as it will save me quite a bit of money and getting the hd audio decoders.

I checked in sigma mall here in bangalore and they quoted me 25k for the onkyo set. I even had a demo with a dvd as well as a blu ray and it was great.

1. Now, my question is that I am having a PS3 which I will use for playing blu ray, does ps3 support hi-def audio codecs to be played thru the avr.

2. Do I require a voltage stabilizer for the onkyo set?

Any help on these matters would be great.

Thanks,

Dear Allajunaki,

Thanks for the config - I am looking forward to pick up a HTS 3300. I am no audiophile so looking for an entry level htib.

Hope you can help me with the following queries:
1. Your personal rating of Onkyo HTS 3300 (I am also looking at Yamaha YHT 292)
2. Price at which you picked it in Blr (I am in gurgaon)
3. Installation - I am getting a quote for 2K additional to install the HTIB - Can this be self installed (wires with package are they good enough - have been promised an additional HDMI and optical cable)
4. Calibration - A friend of mine has an Onkyo receiver which he stated uses some in position microphone - a process using which the avr calibrates each of the speaker using this mic (have not even seen a demo of it) - but does this exist in hts 3300?

Cannot say much, since I have not auditioned the Yamaha one. However, I heard good things about Yam.

25k

I installed it by myself. 2k for installation is on higher side. If you give me 1.5k I will come and install it for you :D , if u were at bengaluru ;). Yes, installation is quite easy, since all the wires are color coded.

That is called as Audessey MultiEQ. This is not present in HTS3300.
There is however "Audessey" setting, which they claim is fine tuned for the speakers provided. My advice is to turn it off, it only makes the speakers sound bad! However, you can fine tune the settings, with values I have quoted above.
Also, if you are to set them urself. Make sure that you feed the appropriate distance values in the amp, to accurately time align your speakers.

Happy listening!
With the audessey off, and with the settings I have quoted above, I find the audio to be quite good for music. I prefer music in "Stereo" format over Dolby Music, or DTS NEO MUSIC settings.

First of all Thanks a ton!

Your personal opinion of Onkyo alone - we seem to have picked the same TV around the same time LG PQ60 in Oct - Nov 09 (just read your signature!) Hope then the tastes in audio may even match

Sure I can pay you 1.5 K for install (would not pay for del-blr-del ;) ). BTW my room (its an open living + dining+ open kitchen) area is 12' x 12' (I am indicating only the area where my setup is going to be restricted and not adding up the remaining open area) will the included wire be good enough and also the speaker sound?

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
