Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

wow..so much activity..gurubhai..hats off to you my brother for spreading the orthogoodness among our brethren.

For those of you building the EHHA, a suggestion, please try and test out the BJT version with the Toshiba 2238/968 output transistors instead of the normal MOSFET versions. It is my hunch that this should sound way better than the MOSFET version. I never tried it in the EHHA but i loveed these transistors in my old stacker 2 amp.

The loaner program is awesome of you to start back home guru.. Going to be watching this thread with great interest. (really the only thread i follow here :D )

I am actually tempted to send my Fostex Tps on a loaner program exclusive to you chaps in india..but will wait for the current loaner program to complete lest steal guru's thunder.

Brendon, the Yh-100 is a great hone and as mentioned earlier, Don spent well over 6 months of constant tuning to get it right. They are among the top headphones of all time to my ears. Screw the audio-gd stuff and get on the Cavalli audio bandwagon to complete the orthohead persona :D

:yahoo: Now let's get the YH-2 loaner get & done quickly. ;)

I also read BMF's opinion regarding BJT vs. Mosfet for EHHA, Is that what changed your views?
I have already bought all the parts for mosfet version so the first build will be a mosfet one but I would consider a BJT version later.

Some impressions of the different BJTs as observed on the Stacker 2 buffer section.

sanyos
2SA1249/2SC3117

Best bass..huge bass
Recessed mids.
Clean sounding.

Toshiba
2SC5171 / 2Sa1930

Sounds very balanced and neutral
Good bass..maybe a tad loose. Similar weight to the BDs.
Very detailed.
Excellent midrange.

Toshiba
2SC2238 / 2SA968
Similar as above..but better weight to the bass..no looseness. Over all it is just better. Probably the best of the lot. I should buy a few more of these.

Ah good, once you finish the mosfet version and decide to start on the BJT version, you can sell it to me ! :yahoo:

Thanks ! I am really loving the YH-100s. The Senn HD650 seem almost colored in comparison. :p

Would love to hear your Thunderpants in action as well. :)

I am dying to get a Cavalli amp but I have the DIY skills of a drunk chimpanzee trying to wheelies on a bike. :o

My only hope is that Gurubhai gets bored of his amp pretty quickly and just sells it to me. :clapping:

Already all pumped up and excited about getting the Yamahas from Gurubhai, now Sachi offering his TPs, the good times keep on rollin'....

Quick question...how are you guys receiving orthos and roduts you purchase off of ebay? Are they being shipped through USPS or UPS/Fedex? Any issues thus far with either party? I wil probably want to send the TPs first to gurubhai, assuming he has never lost a package from the States thus far.

Its funny I have sent packages to over 2 dozen countries but haven't sent even 1 to India in the last 4 years. The TPs will be the first.

I have usually received them via USPS, no issues as of yet.
I do get my packages registered though.

Yup, USPS for me too. I choose USPS Priority or USPS first class and so far the 10 odd packages I ordered from the US have all reached me safetly (including dbel84s YH-100s). :)

Both options have a tracking no and updates are made surprisingly fast on USPS website. We can even track the nos on the Indian postal website for quicker and more accurate updates.

Sweet!!..USPS is my preferred method of shipping. Guru, i was wondering if you'd be willing to coordinate the loaner program if I were to send the TPs to you.
I will ship them out to you soon after the Portland meet this 22nd. Please PM me your shipping address.

this is way too cool :clapping:!!!sachi, mighty good of u to do the a loaner of the "tp's" to the uneducated likes of us,heh.AFAIK guru thought up the loaner program based on one u had done earlier, yes?absolutely awesome,u guys being the consumate 'ortho' proponents/buffs.would be indeed an enlightening experience listening to the nuances of planar sound.count me in too,per favore ;)??cheers

In search of better soundstage from the NADs I have forsaken my previous dampening scheme & all of stock one as well. I removed everything including the tape on the grille. But then I was worried about dust getting inside driver so I stuck a thin tape over the magnet holes.

They now sound well balanced (slightly lesser bass) but more airy & spacious. They now actually ave a SS to speak of, not as big or 3d like DT880/ 600 but have a very satisfactory width and depth with more precise imaging.

Man, these sound good !
Sachi's Thunderpants are gonna have really tough competition. ;)

On other note, My Glassjaraudio order has finally reached me, this weekend is gonna be interesting. :)

I believe you guru..which is why i am thinking whether to send the Wharfie Zebrawoods instead though they are now my daily headphones (i never use the TP anymore).

What do you guys want to hear? :P

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
