Panasonic VT20 Owners Thread

the D-Nice photo settings you used for the break-in period is itself the TORCH mode :)

I hate to say this but he might well have SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the lifetime of his plasma by running in TORCH mode. Its like riding a vehicle at top speeds to do the initial break in :)

I'm no expert but I doubt running the TV in torch role for the break-in will have significantly reduced the lifetime of the plasma. The analogy with running an engine, in my opinion, is not right. The objective here is to stress all the pixels uniformly rather than exercise them gradually (as you would an engine).

If you look at D-Nice's calibrated settings, he's also suggested Contrast: 90, Brightness: 57 in Custom mode. I'd trust that with him being an expert in this area, he will not suggest settings which'll significantly reduce the plasma's lifetime.

I ran my VT20 in torch mode during the break-in period and my current contrast setting is close to 80..

The entire concept of break-in is essentially overrated and the TV is designed to handle any kind of abuse including torch mode. However, I told that because we believe to do break-in to extend the life of a TV which I don't see happening running the TV in Torch mode as it would wear the TV faster than running in low contrast and brightness mode.

What?? No..
Breakin has no effect on life of TV.

If at all it does anything, it helps to burns the intial 'rush hour' pixels uniformly.

Torch mode is uaually avoided because, if you are doing the burn-in in your absence, a power cut and subsequent switch on can expose the TV to statics like channel logo.. If you can take care of that, torch mode is actually good for burn-in.

I meant to balance the initial wear levels of the phosphors and to reduce IR. Initial days or beyond, running in torch mode will actually wear the phosphors faster as the more we excite them (ie run them brighter), the more they will loose their brightness over time.

One interesting observation I made recently while visiting Croma to crack the deal - 50VT20 was adjacent to Samsung 43D450 and 43D490. Earlier (about 20 days back), VT20 was running significantly brighter than these Samsung TVs (all running in their default (dynamic) shop mode. Last week when I was there, VT20 was running significantly darker than these two! It seems VT20 is loosing its brightness faster than the Samsung's! Has someone else noticed this phenomenon?

i presume your view is based on thinking that a person also watches normal TV content while in TORCH mode, but D-Nice mentions NOT to watch anything on the TV for the 100-hrs of TORCH mode break-in. sorry if you knew that beforehand. anyway, I hope Mr. Nagpal followed that instruction of D-Nice and didnt give in to temptation ;)

but nevertheless, i still doubt whether did i achieve any good in the PQ upon following the break-in :indifferent14: or may be am not so good in spotting the difference :)

i really hope there's some problem with that particular TV set :(
or yes, as rpm mentions, might be THX mode

So if i am right the advantage of running breakin slides is to prepare tv for future settings and not for prevention of Burn in/IR .

Only for uniformly aging pixels, it has nothing to do with Burn in / IR. This has been said from page 1.

There is more risk of IR/ Burn-in in the first 200 hours and hence by uniformly aging the phosphors during that period we can avoid IR/burn-in. Thats the reason of initial break-in period. After the break-in period the risk of IR/burn-in is reduced by more than 80-90%.

as far as i can tell, that should not cause you a problem. me, and another user here 'reds4ever' game at that setting. reds also views normal TV content on that figure. also, if am not mistaken, blasto/satan has posted settings somewhere in between this thread which has contrast set to 75 and other settings a bit higher than default. you will have to search :)

I ran my set for 100 hours only with D-nice settings & 120 slides over a period of almost a fortnight spreading out to max 8 hours a day....no content during this period.
After that next 100 hours was mostly cartoons & few movies with toned down settings from this forum (kittu) in professional 1 mode. Now i am almost 225 hours done and an watching movies in all modes i.e. THX, Cinema, professional (custom settings from various forums), etc except photo and game wherein the contrast is too much for me and ruins the natural quality of the movie....

I dont watch much telly except for "TLC" hence the CRT is good enough for SD watching. Havent yet hooked up the TATA SKY HD+ to the VT which i got free with the set hence cannot comment on the same.

No IRs or any issues so far. I am thankful of myself for having the patience during the first 200 hours and trust me i have seen no deterioration in black level or image quality on my set.... on the contrary i think I think the imgae quality is now much much better.....might be because i am no longer watching with the toned down settings............in hindsight it was good to follow the procedure and I would recommend anyone buying their set to do so.....no harm but only gain for me atleast ....

Wow ! Thanks all of you for such a lovely debate on using the torch mode or not....

I had used the so called torch mode for the slides during the first 200 hours. Nothing else was played on the tv.

And now when it is over, I have just forgot everything and started using my plasma in THX mode. I am pretty happy with it. Channels through Airtel hd simply rock.

Thanks to all the members of this forum again, whether or not what I did in the past was right or wrong, the decision of selecting the plasma was the best I did :)

Soon will be uploading the pics, just waiting for the carpenter to complete the cabinet.

Are u using normal 16:9 mode not Zoom in using ur airtel HD . Does airtel logo have any effect?

Oh God!

Not the Break-in slides / IR / Burn-in arguments again. LOL

Haven't we discussed this to death already guys? :p

Bottom line, do it if you want to and if you have the patience. Don't, if you feel silly and just can't wait to start watching TV.
