Samsung 64F8500 Plasma Discussion Thread

If you can point me to some online videos, I can check for these 'issues' on the ST60 as well. I don't have any BD discs at the moment.

No smearing of colors or DFC. No DSE. Saw cricket and tennis on HD. I tested for DSE when the camera traces the cricket ball across the field or sky. I keep looking for it but nothing that makes me doubt Samsung's panel driving method. Yes, there is slight band that is momentarily felt when camera pans across a solid color like the transition from starry sky to tea garden in Life Of Pi. It's for a split second and you have to replay the scene multiple times to notice. I then read in other forums that this is the case with most owners. So nothing to worry and it is hardly there.

Are there specific test sequences you want me to try and report?

Am impressed by this 64" model and it is hard to please me when it comes to flat panels.

Impressive.
Can you please tell me how the performance is with 24hz . Any frame jumping or any kind of fast forward effect.
Also switching between 60hz and 24hz what kind of difference are you seeing.

Thanks.

Hey man, did you inquire about extended warranty on this panel? I'm thinking of doing this investment but samsung's 1 year warranty doesn't seem enough..

A member here posted some 30 odd links to 3D demo clips. Can't remember now - please search.

Actually I was responding to the point about DSE and DFC and thought I can check ST60 for those as well since Shaiju has reported they absent in Samsung 64F8500.

Tangled chapter 4 starting 32:34 where Rapunzel swirls around the tree is a good test for false contouring.

"I See The Light" is a good demo too especially for 3D.

Oh wow! That's quite an increase. Let's see if dealers still stick to <1.84L.

I am having nervous moments here. They kept on delaying the delivery of the TV under one pretext or another now there is a price hike... they have given a final commitment that I will be getting the TV this weekend.(Have already paid an advance of Rs.5,000/- one month back). If the dealer does not stick on to his earlier quoted price of 1.84L, there is going to be a huge fight

Skyfall

Superb movie and amazing cinematography by Roger Deakins.

Watched on BD it twice already.

All pictures taken in dark room. In the first screen grab, the light from bulb opposite the display is faintly visible. It is not visible during actual viewing; only captured by camera.

The rest are in pitch black room.

I seriously need a tripod or some mechanism to avoid blurry pictures like the last above. I thought it was good enough but realized it looked blurry only after upload.

What about other owners? Where are your pictures? If you have it, flaunt it :-)

Didn't find time to do a write-up but hoping to do soon.

Awesome Pics Shaiju... :) can't wait for my set to arrive (Hopefully at the price the dealer had committed to me, keeping fingers crossed)

more than the blackness...it is the uniformity of blackness which amazes me..LED's just cant match this..

Very true. Even the best of the best LED tv can't keep the uniformity of black. In fact, they can't do a convincing black as plasma. Not to mention viewing angles.

Plasma were discarded by many due to "dull" picture, reflective screen, dithering, banding and fear of stubborn IR. F8500 overcomes these issues that you feel like giving it an ovation. Feed it good quality source and it truly shines.

Atonement

One of the few movies I have watched repeatedly and never let me down. BR disc is excellent demo material. I carry it for demos all the time. The movie tends towards pleasing warm but nothing overblown. This cinematography and BD transfer amazes me each time I watch it. Engagingly slow and well acted (both lead actors are gorgeous!).

Here are some screen grabs of the movie. I adjusted the exposure a bit since the direct Nex5 capture hid details. F8500 is set to Warm2 and absolutely love it. The red in WB has to reduced by 2-3 clicks and the redness to skin tones are gone. Note that the camera is more warm than what the pictures actually are.

Adjusted the White Balance in the camera. Which one do you prefer? Note that adjusting the WB resulted in a more warm picture.

F8500 is a breeze to adjust. I adjusted brightness, contrast, color and sharpness using Disney WoW and the free AVSHD709 discs. Did a few clicks here and there to make the picture pleasing to my eyes. I copied the Colour Space and WB (2P and 10P) from AVSForums.com. They look good but not the best thing to do as each calibration throws a different result. I adjust these parameter by eye and set it there for most of the viewing.

I found some old screen shots of Atonement playing on 55LM6700. Thought it would be fun to post a few and compare to 64F8500.
