ST50 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Tweaks, etc.

I see I have to upgrade the firmware on ST50 for getting internet connectivity and tools. So question I have is, will tv go wrong if there is a power failure while upgrading firmware.. ?.

It works like this.First the zipped firmware file is downloaded from internet into the local RAM of the system.A power failure during this time is not a problem as it can download the file again.
Once it is downloaded, it will unzip the file and start writing into the internal memory called flash. The next time the system is switched on, the new settings(written into the flash) come into force. A power failure during the write into the flash corrupts the flash. But the system is intelligent to load always a backup settings in such a case. This is how any systems are usually programmed.
But anyhow it is good to see that the second phase of the operation is uninterrupted.Praying to GOD during this time could help.;)

Thanks. I did this upgrade yday at 11pm, assuming that power failure will not occur at that time.. And to my horror, power failed while download/update is at 13%. When the power came back (via backup gen set) and I switched on the TV again. This time there is a message about interrupted image upgrade and "not to switch of the tv till is message vanish (max 5 mins)". It seems it is trying to revert the corrupt firmware from backup.. I was praying not to have another power failure at that time. Fortunately it could complete the recovery. Also, download and update firmware does not seems to be two steps. It just happen in single step.

Today morning I tried again and this time things went fine.

Also, WIFI chipset used in ST50 has poor reception. When my laptop shows 4 bars near the TV, TV only show 1 or 2 bars.. This lengthen the download time, as well as internet access.

Got my GT50 delivered at 11.00 in the night! April 2012 import which is surprising. Panasonic guys will come home tomorrow hopefully to install it.

Do check the usage soon after install. Had to ask them to replace mine as the brandshop has sent a repacked demo piece.

Yeah, will have to do that first. From the top it doesn't look like it has been opened and resealed. But from the bottom I only did a quick examination and haven't checked throughly. Will wait for the installation guys to come, open the box and set it up.

Congratulations. I would invite you to start a new thread on GT50. So far as I know, there isn't one.

Checked status with the dealer. The TV is arriving by 17th/18th. Told him I shall check the usage in the SRV tool to detect if he ships display piece. Hope that deters him (I don't suspect he'd send me a display piece , but you can never be 100% sure).

Getting Tata Sky + HD installed at home today. Decided in favour of Tata Sky despite fewer channels for their service. Since + needs 2 cables (one for the recording), getting the old RJ6 (thicker cable) replaced with the RJ59 (thinner and flexible) provided by Tata sky. Have to do this because it is not possible to have two thick wires through the pipe. Any idea of whether RJ59 deteriorates the performance over RJ6? Being thinner, I wonder if RFI may play a role? Hopefully Tata Sky have done their research before deciding on this option.

No GT50 thread so posting here. Bought a 42GT50 finally :)

83K without the printer. Will be delivered tomorrow hopefully (have no proof I bought it as the dealer said that the invoice will be delivered along with the TV). Financed through Bajaj FinServ (could have bought it outright but did not want to tie up the money, need to get a AVreceiver too).

Hope I don't get a demo piece as all Panasonic brand showrooms are out of ST/GT any size. Devi International seems to be the only ones having it in stock. Pros they claim, wil know tomorrow.

Wow. that's a great price for GT. The best deal I could find for my 42ST50 purchase in Thane (Mumbai) is 80k (with printer), which could be reduced to 77.5 k (without printer). Which city are you in?

Best wishes!

who is your dealer, I also live in mumbai (andheri). Did he have 50GT50 or 50ST50??

42GT50 is available for 80-81K in delhi(with printer), these are last week prices and were conformed from more than one dealer.

If that is so, then go ahead and buy it. In Pune the prices are (depending upon stock availability) at least 10k more.

Hi Sachin,

u forgot abt printer in Kartik deal.

so its 42GT50 83k w/o printer verses 42ST50 80k withprinter (77.5k w/o printer)

Methink u sold printer cheap, u could have tried open mkt.

By the way Kartik u also went the Devi way with cash or with paper only?

Wow -- Pana finally did drop their prices. Great prices for the GT and ST.

Still a high price..I was quoted 75k in Delhi for st50, a month back....they are dumbos as spammy e8000 has eaten into the market if time..Gt prices is wow though

What is shocking is they are not delivering new stock in India , that's where they charge highest premium for the product...god knows ow they design marketing strategy...they give ht when the product is launched and when the festive season comes hey give useless printers....well I thought companies give best deals during festivals or say during product decline stage not during launch....
