Recently saw three movies that impressed me quite a lot. One was Hindi and the other two were Tamil.
Saw Amir's Ghajini. I have the original Tamil version on DVD and this allowed me to revisit the two to see which one I liked.
In Tamil, they don't glamourise Asin, and she comes across as a mischievous teenager very convincingly. Unfortunately in Hindi, Asin is glamourised and has too much make up. Though she has redone the scenes well, because of the make up and glamourisation, she look older and only half as mischievous.
I also read somewhere that Amir was worried his acting will be compared to Surya's. He need not have worried at all. I feel he has played the role very well indeed. He comes out as more mature, particularly as the business man. The end is also different. Does it come out more in keeping with the need for vengeance? A brutal end to the villain? I am sure different people will have different opinions. But I must say I liked both the Tamil and Hindi versions immensely. My only gripe was that the Hindi version could have had better songs. I think Rehman has failed in this movie.
Now to the Tamil movies.
One is Vaarnam Aayirum. Again a Surya movie where he has acted exceedingly well as a father and son. With exceptionally good songs, Vaarnam Aayirum is doing very well in the box office. There are some stupid scenes, such as an Army Major crying 'Appa Appa' and shedding tears when he is going on a mission. But that aside, this is a movie that will entertain you immensely. The songs have been recorded well and sound good on any system. Using simple Western instruments, Harris Jayaraj has composed good songs for the movie. Hariharan has sung 'Nenjukkul Peidhidum' very well indeed. One of my own favourite mind game is to imaging how this song would have come out if sung by Shankar Mahadevan or Unnikrishnan.
Yesterday I saw Abhiyum Naanum. A movie that revolves around the life of Prakash Raj playing the role of a doting father. Again a movie to be watched. When the daughter grows up she goes and falls in love with a Sardarji. The way the Sardarji's family and friends come and raid the simple house of Prakash Raj is hilarious. Just when I was thinking it would be good to mix Tamil and Hindi in a song, the Director does just that! The way the living style of boisterous Sardars is intermixed with the quite style of South Indians, has been done very well.
If you have not seen them, do watch these movies.
Cheers.
