The Movies I Liked

^^ I used to cringe about these things, but not anymore. I'd say that my Top 250 won't look similar to IMDB Top 250. A good way to diversify is to keep track of other lists at iCheckMovies. It has given me plenty of movies I otherwise would not have even heard of.

But, it is important not to forget that IMDB rankings are a popularity contest and not one where people with similar tastes vote. I remember when fans of 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' voted '1's for the other film close to Oscars. Any and all Pixar movies always made it into the Top 250 (until Brave, I guess).

There are also voting mafias - Turkish voting mafia and Indian mafia - get most on my nerves. Kemal Sunal's movies have a knack of knocking out vastly better movies every now and then. Any good Indian movie immediately breaks into IMDB Top 250 for a short while. Every time I finish a IMDB list, some new/unheard of movie gets into the list demoting me from Platinum award in iCheckMovies.

I still keep using IMDB as a guideline (any movie > 7 a couple of years after release may not be terrible, though there are always exceptions). But, I don't rank IMDB rankings too high!

Last night it was good experience with a German movie Nordwand
English title - North Face - North Face (2008) - IMDb

The movie is about undying desire of reaching the top by the mountain climbers. The story is based on historic plots. The mountain climbing scenes/ stunts were worth mentioning and so is the cinematography. Can give it 5 out of 10 easily.

A good Drama/Comedy movie. Story is a relationship drama which is simple and good coupled with some emotions. Good performance by the lead actors. Good watch overall.




Emperor [2012]

Emperor (2012) - IMDb


A good War/History movie. Story is good, based on true events, is about Emperor Hirohito and his role in WW II. Very good performance by Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones. Good cinematography and background score.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil ... Wow one of the really decent horror comedy and one of the best, scartictic take on the horror genre. Every situation they have shows is very reminiscent to our good old 80 classic horror movies. If YOu cannot relate the sarcasm dont see it but if you do then this would be an enjoyable ride. ....6.8/10

A time pass Action/Drama movie. Story is mediocore, Van Damme in a negative role looks hilarious with his hairstyle in this movie. But good performance by him specially towards the end of the movie. A good watch for JCVD fans.




Fatal Call [2012]

A good Thriller/Drama movie. Story is fine, not too bad. Second half of the movie is really good with a good twist in the story. Nice cinematography and background score.

Getaway [2013]

A good Action/Thriller movie. A car chase from start to end, the story is not bad, get's interesting as is progresses. Very good editing, cinematography and background score/sound mixing. Performance was okay by the lead roles, but the best performance was by the Shelby Mustang Cobra. Worth a watch.

A good Documentary movie about scientist Stephen Hawkings. A full insight into his success in life as a scientist. Good watch.




How I Live Now [2013]

A good Drama movie. Story is good, but slow. Good cinematography. Nice performance by Saoirse Ronan.

Saw The Hobbit today. What a treat after that abomination dhoom 3. This was a better one than first part. 3rd and final part will be epic judging by how this one ended.

Rewatched Moner Manush, a Bengali movie on the life of Lalan Fakir. Great acting my Prosenjit Chatterjee. And the best part of the movie is the soundtrack.

Yeah, Its a very different and excellent movie. But have you watched Satyanweshi last film of our beloved Rituparno Ghosh ?

If not then watch it, a must watch. The film may seem slow paced but that's how it was made. Acting and script are both good.

A very good Action/Thriller movie. Story is good, starts off a bit flat but catches up as the movie progresses. Good cinematography and background score, nice editing. Worth a watch.

Another good Action/Thriller movie. Story is good. Very good performance Tom Cruise in the lead role. David Oyelowo's character seemed very funny to me. Good cinematography and sound mixing. Worth a watch.

You forgot the best (IMHO) - Jerry Maguire. The cute kid alone makes it worth... not to mention Rene Zellweger in her breakout performance.

Riddick (2013) - IMDb - I personally liked it. Its more closer to Pitch Black (the best of the lot) than the more ambitious The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) - IMDb. However, this was a box office dud like The Chronicles so it might be a while before Riddick's character is resurrected anytime soon and probably that means more of the Fast & Furious franchise.

Coming to the story... Riddick is an anti-hero with a heart of gold. He can seen in the dark and is fearless to boot... which means he can conquer both man and animal (even alien beasts) in any fight. Makes for exciting times especially when you throw in Riddick's attitude which is anti-social at best and antagonist at worst. Still a lovable character and a throwback to the anti-hero from the 40s made popular by the likes of Humphrey Bogart.

Its a good watch if you have seen Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, and if you have not then I recommend you start this franchise/trilogy with Pitch Black. Vin Diesel might even convince you he can act!

But i still feel he was best in Top Gun.
