The Movies I Liked

You forgot the best (IMHO) - Jerry Maguire. The cute kid alone makes it worth... not to mention Rene Zellweger in her breakout performance.

Other movies of Tom I highly recommend are...
The Last Samurai (2003) - IMDb
Rain Man (1988) - IMDb
Born on the Fourth of July (1989) - IMDb
The Firm (1993) - IMDb
The Color of Money (1986) - IMDb
Cocktail (1988) - IMDb
A Few Good Men (1992) - IMDb

I agree. I have seen them all. I mentioned The Last Samurai in a previous post :). I was trying to mention his more recent action/sci-fi movies I liked:p. I would like to add to your list - War of the Worlds, Vanilla Sky and Valkyrie. Well, most if not all of his movies are worth watching (more than once)

(Edited) To me, movies of these actors are worth watching - Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, Leonardo Di Caprio, Will Smith, Al Pacino etc

Most movies of Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro etc are good too.

Jack the Giant Slayer [2013]

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) - IMDb

A good Fantasy/Adventure movie. Story is simple and entertaining. Good cinematography, sound mixing and vfx. Special mention to the sequence where the Isabelle is rescued, it was very simple and realistic, i.e without much chaos and exaggerated action. Overall a good movie.

Killing Lincoln [2013]

Killing Lincoln (TV Movie 2013) - IMDb

A very good documentary'ish Drama/History movie about the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Very good narration by Tom Hanks, and nice performance by Jesse Johnson as John Wilkes Booth. Very good cinematography.

The Assault [2010]

L'assaut (2010) - IMDb

A good Action/History movie about the hi-jack of Air France and it's rescue by the SWAT team in 1994. Story is could have been better, not as good as United 93 (2006) - IMDb. Good cinematography and editing. Worth a watch.

Cheers.

Closed Circuit [2013]

Closed Circuit (2013) - IMDb

A good Crime/Drama movie. Story is okay, good editing and background score. Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall were fair enough in their performance. One time watchable.

Lovelace (2013) - IMDb

A true event based Crime/Drama movie. Story is good, it's about Linda Boreman and her life. Very good editing.

London Boulevard [2010]

London Boulevard (2010) - IMDb

A good Action/Drama movie. Story is good, but very slow. Nice performance by the lead characters. Lot of talking in the movie. Good background score.

Machete Kills [2013]

Machete Kills (2013) - IMDb

A full time pass Action/Drama movie. Story is bearable, not as good as the first part. But Danny Trejo was just entertaining, he was like the Rajnikanth of Hollywood. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Antonio Banderas were good, but Mel Gibson and Lady Gaga were total waste.

Cheers.

At last watched The Desolation of Smug in 3D

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) - IMDb

Here is the Making of Diary : Making Of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" Full | All of Production Blogs 1-9 - YouTube

I'd say it was a slight improvement on "An Unexpected Journey" although it bears even less resemblance to the source material. I think you kind of have to abandon the idea that this is in any way a faithful adaptation of The Hobbit and just go with it. That way, you might just raise a smile when someone proclaims, "Da! There's a dwarf in our toilet!"

To be fair, it does broadly retain the right sequence of events... Beorn, Mirkwood, Spiders, Wood Elves, Barrels (fun chase sequence here), Laketown, Mountain, Treasure, Dragon... it just does it in a completely different way. The orc chase plot thread from the first film is maintained (although Azog is called back to Dol Guldur early on) with a bit of extra elf assistance along the way. Laketown is slightly different too, with Bard now the town dissident and the Master (surprisingly well handled by Stephen Fry) more of a corrupt local politician who shivers at the thought of elections. As an aside, the Laketown set was my favourite - it's a bit Disney, but very well realized, with lots of nice nooks and crannies.

The biggest let down for me was the verbal sparring between Bilbo and Smaug once he breaks into Lonely Mountain. It was the one scene from the book I was looking forward to and they rush it in favour of a running battle between the dwarfs and Smaug (which admittedly has its moments). Smaug is one of the more impressive cinema dragons (as he bloody well should be), though I was surprised to see that they plumped for the traditional moving mouth to make him speak. But the idea of a talking lizard made no sense. I wonder what he had in mind because in the first part The Hobbit, there was no indication that he could speak !

But 3D effects were extremely well executed. A Bluray Must buy for 3D TV owners.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!!!

Watched The Wolf of Wall Street today...

Martin Scorsese has done it again and his latest flick is the land of opportunity to entertain ourselves It's the director's best recipe since the days of Goodfellas!!!
The story of a wall street broker doing all the silly, weird, obscene and even illegal stuff to become a successful and rich man is a delightful watch... Too much comic and entertaining that viewers like me never felt it was a 3 hour long movie. A charismatic character is lived by Leonardo DiCaprio ... He gives another stellar performance and I seriously wish him the Best Academy Award this year!!
If you got the appetite to consume 'F' word more than 500 times, there is no stopping of fun... We get to see lot of funny and offensive characters ... such as the 'Superbad' Jonah Hill and all of them were great including the small appearance of Matthew McConaughey.. No doubt, he is also one of the best actor in Hollywood now a days...
Very entertaining movie.... You like it or not, don't miss it!!
P.S. - Those who are worried about movie being censored in India; yes there is 6 minutes of cutting, but it didn't make much of a difference to the actual narration. More details can be read here: The Wolf of Wall Street: misogynist, adolescent but entertaining | Firstpost

Lovelace [2013]

It is a movie based on the life of Linda Lovelace, who came into fame for the first scripted pornographic movie Deep Throat in the 70's.

Lovelace is an autobiographical piece, with the tragic tale of Lovelace being abused, tortured, raped by her agent/ husband. I give this movie 6/10.

However, there are plenty of controversies regarding the alleged abuse/ rape etc. by Lovelace in her autobiography.

Lucky Number Slevin (2006) - IMDb

A story of mistaken identity and revenge.

Brilliant movie. I wonder when we will see movies like this made in India where the producer does not think that the audience likes only the dhoom 3 type of mindless stuff. Each scene is brilliant, slick. If de caprio had actually been a stock salesman he would have done great.

Centurion [2010]

Centurion (2010) - IMDb

A good Action/Adventure. Story is good, Roman's fighting behind enemy lines. Very good cinematography and background score. Even without a single dialogue in the movie, Olga Kurylenko put up a very good performance.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story [2004]

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - IMDb

A very good Comedy/Drama movie. Story is simple and good, with lot of humor keeps the viewer laughing. Ben Stiller was hilarious with his character and performance. Supporting roles also add to the entertainment. Worth a watch.
