The Movies I Liked

Rogue One - A Star War Story ...... THIS ... my friends THIS IS EXACTLY what Star Wars : The Force Awakens should have been. First I admit I love star wars, and I enjoyed Episode I,II and III as much I enjoyed IV (Original Star wars), V and VI and I was so highly looking forward to Episode VII. Before I go ahead let me share the review I wrote for the force Awakens as well .....Do read it first just below this review...

Now this movie even though not falling into the straight hierarchy of the original SW Time Line, still managed to capture the essence of it, it had everything Episode VII didn't. It had the actual seriousness, oodles with tension and surprisingly, even though all the characters introduced were new and had nothing directly to do with the Original SW timeline, the director/writers still managed to bring that character depth and I actually cared for everyone, (unlike EP VII).
The movie has a much darker appeal, is much mush more gritty than EP VII and as I said characters are well laid out.
Add to that impeccable CGI that actually felt a part of the universe and not just something coz it's a SW movie. The sets are GRAND and felt so so real ... like ... out there, very much like the TV series (EXPANSE). Then finally not to forget, the ACTION ..oh Boy!.....The movie has everything.Ground battle, urban combat, space engages, close quarter fighting; you name it and every encounter felt gritty, tense and gruesome. ..... I never expected a nonlinear, star war movie could, in fact, be better than the original SW, kudos to the director "Gareth Edwards" and the writers ..... I am actually excited to look forward to this franchise as much I look forward to the original one /...... 7.8/10 for this one. A rating that is very rare for me to give to any movie let alone a sci-fi movie

And oh I forgot the sound .... Home Theater BLISS ...just rocks your SUB and the entire, sound staging of the movie is pure bliss, which also indefinitely adds to the super satisfaction you get at the end.

Below is the review for Star Wars : Episode VII

Star Wars: The Force Awakens .... well well well ... finally went to see he most awaited movie on 2015. Star Wars - The Force Awakens. My take might not be appreciated by many. There is no simple way to put this so let me be straight, to begin with. this movie for ma falls so flat and boring in comparison to the Prequel Trilogy created by George Lucas. I am so so sooo surprised that the trilogy ranked and is appreciated less than this flat attempt created by J.J. As a stand alone movie, well I might say it was ok, not bad, BUT as a star wars franchise, this falls so so flat and dull and uninteresting. There is no seriousness no tension in any of the situations created, no character depth. I hardly cared for any, except for Hans Solo, that too because of the history associated with him with the original star wars. Basically, there was no star war FEEL to it.

The world 3 prequels created was far far better and in tune with the original 2, which is not surprising as it was created by the father himself George Lucas. This movie was for kids and teen at the best, thanks to Disney I guess. Adults who have followed the original star wars and the prequels can and will not like it, I am sure about this. Heck the true SW fans were even critical to the prequels, but Fore Awakens ...man....has made the prequels start tall and classic.

Another aspect very inherent, to star war universe was the underlying spirituality and the metaphysical forces at play, however, in this version, the characters seem to ceaselessly keep running from things and having meaningless, often silly conversation. There is no exploring of the depths of some of the more intriguing concepts of SW like the supernatural philosophy, spirituality. This fact, however, is not surprising as the masses seem to be entertained predominantly by action (that too un-innovative), comedy, flashing lights, and explosions, not exploring the psychological latitudes of light and dark, good and evil within the human soul.

Disappointing truely .... 6/10 for this one.

Rogue One (2016)

@Sam9s has already written about this and I am just going to nod in agreement - in my own words. 'Rogue One' naturally fits in as a part of the 'Star Wars' franchise which Episode VII was trying so hard to achieve. 'Force Awakens' was a mildly entertaining movie. But an uninspiring plot, cliche' dialogues and some questionable casting made it hard to accept it as part of the beloved SW franchise. One thing RO gets very right from the first scene is the pacing. It may not have characters that you can compare with Han Solo and the dialogues sometimes feel flat. But, it does have the heart in the right place and more often that not, the action keeps you engaged. There are also interesting side characters like the blind Imwe played fantastically by Donnie Yen and the wise-cracking robot voiced by Alan Tudyk. A good entertaining couple of hours!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

I am a bigger fan of Harry Potter movies than LotR. I was so looking forward to a new series set in the same universe. FBAWFT has some very good special effects and is interesting in places. But what it comes nowhere close to creating the HP franchise in terms of overall engagement - be it characters or plot. When it comes to acting, I found Eddie Redmayne (my first movie with him) to be just weird. Ezra Miller, who plays a complete contrast to the character he played in 'Perks of being a Wallflower', was much better. Four more movies in this franchise? I am not that interested!

I could not get myself to believe that you will watch Star Wars, (this is a compliment ofcourse.. :D) since I have almost always seen you watching core drama philosophical movies more so than pure typical hollywood entertainers, but glad you took the chance and watched it ......:)

^ I was and am a BIG fan of Star Wars, especially the original trilogy. It used to rank among my favorite movies at one point. I still do catch up on Hollywood blockbusters or entertainers from time to time. But, I don't write about them here since (a very late) 100th post about a movie won't add any value other than to say "Me too" :)

It wasn't always like that. Before 2006, all I ever knew was Hollywood blockbusters and B-movies, mostly the latter :o.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

This is the American debut of Andre Ovredal, who directed one of the better horror comedies I have watched in recent times, Trollhunter. Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch play the father-son duo which ensures that the acting is decent. The highlight of the movie is the performance of Olwen Kelly who plays the unmoving but eye-pleasing corpse. I watched the first 40 minutes last night and went to sleep expecting it to be at least slightly different. Despite having the jump scares and usual tropes exactly where you expect them, the autopsy which unravels the secrets hidden in the corpse was very interesting. The second half, especially the end, did not match the intrigue of the first half. Never the less, a decent horror movie to watch if you are in the mood.

I like/watch all kind of movies, sure, I have preferences and fav Genres, but I dont shy away from philosophical/Drama movies, however there is one major rule to every movie, it should stir up your senses and emotions, in a way that you are entertained, if a movie cannot do that, howsoever intellectual and philosophical it is, I would rate it low, but that's just my criteria ... PMMV:)

I was also StarWars fan. Watched first starwars at Metro Cinema with family. (Or was it Excelsior ?) There were some bollywood people. One I could recognize was Mr. Iftekhar (Inspector in Mr. Amitabh's Don Movie) Nice experience watching the movie. It was Doby sound I think. Even coaxed my mom to buy me StarWars thermos (Eagle make me thinks). My best friend had Starwars Red LED watch bought from umerika. Action scenes of Return of the Jedi were my favourite. Few weeks back there was Force awakens on TV I think. I got few glimpses. With modern means the actions scenes are fantastic.....

....but the thrill is gone. I doubt if I would be as happy as I got my StarWars souvenirs back then. Now my nephew likes these current movies; and I rarely watch full movies. Listening Music has reduced to occasional Indian Classical, Hindi movies or very rarely Western Classical. Wish there was hyperspace jump to old days. :)

Me thinks that is the way one must live....... there isn't anything predefined in life.. go live :)

Hidden Figures...

A must watch film 'period'. A well stared, acted, directed, everything is too good. It keeps you attached to the movie from the first scene till the last node and you'll just want more.
True events shown truly and nicely. One of the best films I saw in this year, highly recommended.
