Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

How much will be the picture quality difference between U7980 & U8080?

Depends on how much you care. For most folks, U79 is all you need since it's a really good panel. The U80 is obviously better, but at that point you need to be a bit nitpicky about things as well:
  • Do you care about 1000+ nits of specular highlight brightness and actually watch that much HDR content?
  • Do you really watch a lot of dark content in a completely dark room to notice the local dimming improvements?
  • Are you experienced with a high-end TV and want a top of the line TV?
The U80 is significantly better TV. But if you're mostly watching SD/1080p non-HDR content, it will be a waste. You need to care a lot about PQ and watch HDR content to justify high end TVs.

I don't expect Toshiba to release u80 anytime soon or may even not release at all.
Because the hisnense u7qf was a total disaster and literally tanked in India so based on that experience they might SKIP u80
These are just my thoughts
U7qf was never launched. Hisense/toshiba doing the same drama with u80 of marketing months before they actually go on sale. Could be do to with covid related supply chain issues or import restrictions or anything else. Either way, I’ll have to wait more for it to get launched but my patience is running thin. It’ll be stupid of them to not launch u7qf and u80 during diwali season.

No, these TVs are made for movies, TV shows and your regular TV content. For gaming, you need to either get a 1440p/4k 144Hz monitor, go with Samsung Frame, or the LG OLEDs (B9, C9, BX, CX) if you can afford them.

1440p 165Hz monitors are available as low as 20-25k now, and I'd highly suggest you go for them over a TV unless you have deep pockets (in that case go for LG OLED).

Do you think u8080 will be good for gaming?

Yo, lightgamer (dude why is your username lightgamer? :P) is right but it also depends on your gaming rig and the kind of games you play.

With PS4/Xbox or a budget PC (1650S/1660S and lower), you are gonna be good with a 60Hz display as long as it has low response time and low input lag. These are the 2 main things. Samsung has a few features that take advantage of the 120hz refresh rate for the consoles but user reviews have been very mixed. The implementation hasn't been that great.

The U80 is good for gaming, if you are looking for a 65inch display under 1L and okay with 60fps. It has great motion handling and picture quality. This is with the assumption that it is a rebranded Hisense H9G. At 55 inches, you get better options for gaming.
If you play shooters competitively, get a monitor.
If you are planning for a PS5/Xbox Series X or have a high end PC, follow lightgamer's advice.

lol, I was just reading about Hisense and look at this (From Wikipedia):

In 2015, Hisense received a five-year license to use the Sharp brand on televisions in the Americas. Hisense also bought a Sharp factory in Mexico.[12][20]

In June 2017, Hisense was sued by Sharp under its new owner Foxconn, seeking to have the licence agreement halted. Sharp accused Hisense of damaging its brand equity by utilizing its trademarks on products it deemed to be "shoddily manufactured", including those that it believed to have violated U.S. safety standards for electromagnetic radiation, and deceptive advertising of their quality. Hisense denied that it engaged in these practices, and stated that it planned to defend itself in court and "will continue to manufacture and sell quality televisions under the Sharp licensed brands."[21][22]

In February 2018 Sharp dropped the lawsuit.[23]

And damn, they own so many companies!

They don't own anything. They just license the names of these companies only for TVs and related electronics. If they owned Sharp, how could Sharp sue itself?
In fact, almost all cheaper manufacturers buy from hisense and one or two other companies and rebadge them. In the service menu of my Vu TV, there was option to change the logo to at least 50 companies.

Hi all, I am new to this forum. I found this thread via google while searching for reviews of U79. This thread proved very helpful.

Anyways, I got my 55" U7980 delivered and installed today. I have attached the packed box pics as I remember someone asking about it. The box need to be turned upside down to get the TV out and also added detailed specifications I found in the manual.

Initial impressions with consideration that I am no expert -

- Since the inbuilt OS is lacking few apps and I have firestick 4K, I plan to use that most of the time.
- By default Firestick 4k connects at 1080p and 8bit display unlike my previous VU Premium android 50" which used to connect at 4k and 10 bit by default. (Video Resolution set to "Auto" under display setting of Firestick 4k)
- The Firestick 4k UI looks more crisp and lively while inbuilt OS menus and text look kind of blurred / faded.
- Tried changing color depth to 12bits and forced resolution to 4k, that made videos choppy on Netflix. Turned on the Enhanced HDMI from TV's menu and that seems to solve the issue. Netflix got upscaled to 4k with this setting (I have Full HD plan of Netflix as of now, will go for Ultra HD soon)
- Best experience till now was on Amazon Prime Video (both Video and Audio). Even though when Firestick 4k was in auto Full HD mode, playing "The Boys" made the video auto turn to Ultra HDR with a boosted heavy sound. That kind of experience is lacking in both inbuilt and Firestick Netflix.
- Couldn't find anything with HDR or Dolby Vision either on inbuilt OS and Firestick 4k's Netflix. All videos on Netflix say HD.
- Sound varies a lot depending on source, app and OS.

If anyone is using Firestick 4k or MI box 4k on U79 then let us now how was your experience with HDR and Dolby vision on Netflix and other apps.
Another update, I upgraded my netflix plan to 4k. Now I am getting UHD, HDR and Dolby Vision contents in Netflix App on both Firestick 4k and Vidaa OS. Good to see this TV has native UHD Netflix support.
Prime Video app in Firestick doesn't show any info about Videos like UHD, HDR etc but the native app on Vidaa OS does.
It doesn't matter if Firestick 4k is detected at 1080p initially. TV switches to required format and resolution when content is played in apps and display resolution is Auto. Netflix launches with Dolby Vision logo.
I found the quality of UHD and HDR videos in Firestick 4k and Vidaa OS's Netflix and Prime video almost similar, Firestick 4k maybe marginally better.
Some Prime Video HDR content just look okay, having yellowish kind of tint and washed out, while Netflix ones look good.

Yesterday watched little bit of hdr movie 7500 in prime, and it looked very good.
Used hdr night picture mode with local dimming set to high.
The colors like skin tones looked accurate and natural. Black level looked deep and rich.
Also watched a malayalam movie, the colors looked natural and very similar to my previous plasma.
It was in cinema night mode with no tweaking.
Pleasantly surprised with out of the box accuracy.

Has anyone tried playing 4k HDR content via fire tv?, My firetv is having issues playing HDR, however playing youtube HDR through another app "smartyoutubeTv" works fine.

Native player works fine and plays the content fine. It's just weirdly the youtube app on firetv.

For my Pin code which is in chennai it is available from day one.
oh! Keepa wasn’t showing any price history so I assumed it’s not available throughout the country. My bad.

who is the seller, can you check please

Is Disney, sonyliv etc coming to vidaa os.
Why there are only few apps.

The TV is supposed to get VIDAA OS 4.0 in Q1 2021. Hotstar and Sony LIV will come then, according to Toshiba. I personally hope the plex app improves too, as it sucks right now.

I've managed to fix the DLNA app bug and got proper 4k HDR working from PC to TV over network. It seems that the WiFi module on this TV is seriously weak or the drivers haven't been patched. It does support both 2.4 and 5 GHz but connects to 2.4. I have a 'smart' mesh router, so both 2.4 and 5GHz are named the exact same for the router to do its magic and switch between them seamlessly. Now, there is no way for the TV to connect to 5GHz band in this case unless you name it differently and manually connect to that, which is just sad. All of my other devices, even from 2015-16 connect to 5GHz just fine on my router. There's some fault of the DLNA app too as in it doesn't save adequate buffer, as youtube, netflix and plex work fine over the same network.

So I put a secondary node under the TV directly and connected it via ethernet. Now DLNA app works seamlessly and even plays 30+ GB REMUX files without a hitch. Finally done with the setup of the TV!

Hi guys, I'm not sure if there is even a solution here, but what happens if say 3-4 years down the line the TV remote breaks or stops working? I think this TV has a bluetooth remote, but will it work with another universal remote? Are replacement remote available?
