Toshiba U79 and U80 Owners Discussion And Review !!

This is a good usage Szenario when you want to just add a suwoofer to the tv.
Yes, but not for a soundbar along with the TV. This will obviously cause weird issues with even a very small lag causing weird sounds. Echo is guaranteed, but you will also get interference where certain frequencies might get amplified and certain get destroyed due to the waveform delay.

If your AVR doesn't support 4k HDR passthrough, there's no way to play TRUE HD and DTS HD to your AVR without eARC (which low end TV like this don't support). Best you can do is HDMI ARC which supports Dolby Digital Plus or DTS, which are also very high quality codecs in their own right.

If you have a very high end sound system, consider investing in a better AVR since you probably have the money to do so. If you don't, just set the audio in TV's audio setting to Dolby Digital(others are reporting that other options don't work) and output to ARC. You'll still get high quality 5.1 channel audio.

I tested the audio over HDMI ARC on the TV. Below are my findings:

1. HDD connected to TV through USB and sound over HDMI ARC to AVR:
  • DTS - You have to set the speakers to Auto/Passthrough for the TV to send DTS signal over ARC. AVR rightly detects the stream as DTS
  • DTS HDMA - Since ARC does not support lossless format, you have to set the speakers to either PCM/Passthrough/DD. I found DD/Passthrough sounds better than PCM
  • Dolby - You can set speakers to Auto/DD/Passthrough - All work and AVR detects stream rightly as DD
  • Dolby TrueHD - Again here, all you get is DD and not lossless audio
2. Netflix app in TV
  • NF app strangely shows 5.1 only and not Atmos when you have output set as 'ARC'.
  • Here the PCM setting gives 2.1, while DD setting gives you DD 5.1 signal on AVR
3. Prime/NF app on FireTV 4k
  • Nothing except DD setting on TV works. AVR detects stream as DD rightly. I assumed FireTV has DD only and thus nothing else works
So if you have HDD connected to TV, you get the right 5.1 sound (DD/DTS) while lossless is output as DD/DTS only. May be eARC would have solved the issue. Given I have 5.1 AVR, I am ok with it. If you have 7.1 AVR, may be you should connect FireTV 4K to AVR rather than TV. My AVR does not passthrough 4K so I have to connect the FireTV 4K to TV and send audio over ARC.

Hope this helps someone looking for audio answers. Also if you have found a way to send DTS HDMA/Dolby TrueHD rightly to AVR from TV, let me know.

This is not even a supported way of using speakers. Why dont u use the speakers alone?
Yes, u r right and as lightgamer said distortion is clearly visible. For the time being I am just using it. Earlier, soundbar and subwoofer was lot closer to me while watching movies (laptop) now I am maintaining a 10 feet distance so the sound effects are not prominent and it affects the total experience. That's the reason for simultaneous usage.

Thanks for the info! I have recently ordered this tv and waiting to collect it. Will be using it with my 5.1 htib onkyo avr (2010 model) which doesn't support 4k passthrough. Don't know much about hdmi arc and want to know if I will get Dolby digital/DTS sound on my avr by connecting TV's hdmi arc to any hdmi input of the avr? Does the avr also need to have hdmi arc port? Was thinking to get an optical cable and connect it to the avr to get dd and DTS.

You need to connect HDMI Out of your AVR to HDMI In of TV which has marked ARC (HDMI 1 IIRC). ARC is return channel so HDMI out of AVR would work just fine. Its used as in/out both.

Your home theater in a box Onkyo, (10 years young and going) may sound well with optical connection(forget DTS or Dolby digital, there are products who have those features but have not licenced it). Check when the TV comes, and if it sounds good to you, then job done.

ok, so if i connect tvs hdmi arc to avrs hdmi out, and when want to watch bluray rips through mi box 4k connected to other non arc hdmi input of tv, then also will i get sound from my avr?

Yes. TV would do below:
  • If the sound setting is Passthrough - TV would not touch the audio stream but pass it as is to AVR
  • If the setting is PCM - TV would break down the original stream (DTS/DD) into PCM and would pass it as raw-PCM
  • If the setting is DD - TV would convert original stream (DTS for eg) into DD and pass it on to AVR
This is what is my understanding of the handling of audio by the TV

Actually wanted to know that when mi box 4k is connected to tvs HDMI port say port 2 (non arc) and avr is connected to tvs HDMI 1 arc port, in that case wouldn't l be selecting source to HDMI 2 onmy tv to view mi box 4k? And when on HDMI 2 source of tv , will it still send sound signal coming from mi box to avr through other arc hdmi port?

This is working exactly as expected. So there's nothing wrong with the TV's ARC mode. I have only used optical and that's working as intended too.

If your AVR doesn't have ARC or HDMI passthrough, it's better to use optical audio. You can also try with TV's ARC port to AVR's HDMI in/out, but that may or may not work depending on your AVR.

You will be able to play Dolby Digital and DTS just fine via optical as well.

Mi box will just send all the stream to the TV. It doesn't need to get connected to the ARC port at all. I can't speak about TV's ARC port to HDMI out of AVR (just use optical if that doesn't work as I said above. But if your AVR has ARC, connect ARC to ARC of TV.

  • If the sound is set to passthrough, the TV will not touch the audio stream only if it can be sent to the AVR via the connection. For example, if the audio stream is DTS HD or TRUE HD which can't be sent over ARC, it will send only 2 channels of that audio instead of all of them.
  • You are correct on the PCM part.
  • If the setting is DD/DD+, TV would upsample or downsample every stream to DD/DD+ with 5.1 channels. It might be able to send DTS untouched though if the AVR supports it, but I won't bet on it.

Yes, that would work. But it should ideally require ARC port of your TV to connect to ARC port of your AVR. ARC is only for audio out, while HDMI 2 will be used for HDMI in.

I have done the same, I have an 11 year old marantz recieved with this TV. I assume you also don't have an arc port on the receiver. Get an optical cable and connect TV optical out to receiver optical in. That the only way to get Dd/dts and watch 4k content. No other way will work. Unless you are ready to sacrifice 4k option and ready to watch in 1080p, they you can connect your mibox/fire tv directly to receivers hdmi input and receivers output to your TVs hdmi in

This Tv is not deliverable at my pin code for several months now. Can someone help me buy it. My City is Nagpur, Maharashtra. Can anyone close by check the availability.
My city is Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Rd store here arranged the TV after I requested him. They delivered here to my home in a week

Can anyone tell me, where does TV's native Amazon prime show the current resolution of the video that is currently being played. Prime video for Firetvstick and other andorid box show the current resolution as soon as you pause the video, but this doesn't happen with the TV's native prime video app

The native prime app doesn't show display info and there is no other way to find the resolution of the display on prime video
Whereas on Netflix it does when u press info button on the remote

Hello guys, I am using the settings mentioned in this forum for U7980 and noticed a couple of things.
1. In dark scenes, I see considerable noise/grainy effect. Any settings to overcome these?
2. When I play movies from my pendrive/external hard drive, sometimes the subtitles don't work even if there is .srt file.

Anyone faced these issues and got it sorted?

That might be due to the content itself. You'll need very high quality content to not have noise in low light. You can try the noise reduction setting, but that might harm high quality content.

Can you share which settings you're using. I've shared a couple.
2. When I play movies from my pendrive/external hard drive, sometimes the subtitles don't work even if there is .srt file.

Just press menu button and select the subtitles. Also, having an .srt file is outdated. What I generally do is remux the file to MKV and have the SRT inside it only.

I highly recommend getting a firestick 4k with this TV. The internal media player is no good.
