was in the mood yesterday, reign in blood is my all-time fav. have you heard that chaos album? if you do, you'll wonder why they are not on the international stage. they are quite up there with the best. however I am yet to hear them perform live. James Hetfield once commented, if you want to know the true quality of a band, listen to them live.

I saw Chaos live here in Bangalore..I think it was in October this year. Their sound got a little messed at times but that's nothing new. I was impressed with their lead guitarist. However, I must say that I don't expect a band like Chaos to hit the international stage. They're pretty generic. Metallica Sabbath Priest Maiden etc got so big because they changed the face of music with their albums..their live shows. They all had their own style back then. Very unique! Chaos (while they make good music) are not doing anything different. If an Indian metal band has to really make it big internationally, it can't be done by copying the western style of metal. Just look at the way bands like Orphaned Land (from Israel) have caught the attention of the world (not in the mainstream of course..although they're slowly getting increased press attention. Mainly because of an online petition for Orphaned Land to be awarded a Nobel Prize! Really!) by fusing their culture with metal. Very inspiring.

James Hetfield once commented, if you want to know the true quality of a band, listen to them live.

That's very true.

Mary's boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.
And man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day.
Long time ago in Bethlehem so the Holy Bible said
Mary's boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

Hark now hear the angels sing a king was born today
And man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day.
Mary's boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

While shepherds watched their flock by
night, they see a bright new shining star,
they hear a choir sing a song the music seemed to come from afar.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.

Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, came to Bethlehem that night,
they found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight.

And then they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn,
and in a manger cold and dark, Mary's little boy was born.

Hark, now hear the angels sing, a king was born today,
And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day.
Mary's boy child Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas Day.

I have been listening to quite a few new titles :
1) Bobbie Gentry's Ode to Billie Joe - I have only heard the title track long, long ago. Finally got to listen to the full album.
2) Smokie - Greatest Hits. Remember Living Next Door To Alice?
3) Dionne & Friends - That's What Friends Are For, 45 rpm. I never knew that the title track was written by Burt Bacharach (with Carole Bayer Sager)
4) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes. This album is unabashedly political, one side has a picture of Reagan and the other Gorbachev. Another 45 rpm.
5) Bonnie Tyler - Faster Than The Speed Of Night. Her raspy and gravelly voice never fails to enthral.

Lined up for the next few days (or whenever I can must the energy to clean them, whichever is earlier):

1) Loverboy - Keep It Up
2) Ruggiero Ricci with The London Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Maj Op 35 (a real favourite )
3) Yevgeni Mogilevsky playing Beethoven sonatas 22 and 32.
4) Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
5) Mendelssohn - Sommernachtstraum by the Concertgebouw Orchester, Amsterdam
6) Cliff Richard - Dressed For The Occasion - with the London Philharmonic Orchestra
7) Chicago - 16
8) Grover Washington Jr - Live at the Bijou - double record
9) Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 - Maxi 20
10) Roy Harper - Stormcock
11) The George Benson Collection - double record
Plus 7 Olivia Newton John records.

Blondie & The Motels were some of the fav bands of my youth! Ive an Indian pressing of Blondies Parallel Lines that, for me, a perfect pop album ever released!!!

The bad girl of jazz - Amy Winehouse - Back to Black. The recording quality is no great shakes, but her unique style shines through. Sonically, her album Frank is way better (on LP).

Personal favourite track: Me & Mr Jones. So flambouyant, coquettish, and the backing vocals are such an outlandish tease. The song often threatens to collapse but this diva rescues it in her unique style, as only she can. I love it.

Keith Jarrett - My Song.

This features the incomparable Jan Garbarek on saxes, Palle Danielsson on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums. All compositions by Jarrett. Zero sleeve notes. Like all ECM titles I know, this one's too produced by Mannfred Eicher. Sometimes I wish ECM had a garrulous sleeve note writer like Mr Kavi Alexander of Water Lily Records (eg: the excellent sleeve notes in Tabula Rasa).

My only regret when listening to small ensemble acoustic bands is the limited extension of my speakers in the lower octaves. I hear only a pale shadow of standing bass.

@chiristian_paul - I recently picked up that Alison Moyet LP..the opening snare kick on "Is this love" is just gorgeous to hear on vinyl. Great voice too.
