Class D Amplifiers

Your soundstage experience may possibly be quite different if you use multi-driver and harder-to-drive speakers, as your amp seems to be built for them.

Spot on Asliarun. The sound stage is pretty decent in my setup.

Curious, so are you going to spend 10+K more on this amp or are you going to spend it on a preamp?

The cost that I am envisaging is like this:

Code:
Amp + Power supply Board (Including customs) - 9500
Torodial transformer - 700
Chassis (Reasonable quality) - 2000
Face plate (Good quality) - 800
RCA connectors, Power switch etc - 500
Contingencies - 1500
TOTAL (Maximum) -15000
Trust me,sonic nirvana can be found off the beaten path too.:D
That is very true. Your gear is a living;) example.:D

An Arian is not too different, actually :). Good luck in your endeavour to extract better sound.

Thank you for the best wishes Bala. I need them.:)

Is the 9500/- on amp + psu board already spent or is it over and above what you already have?

where do you plan to get faceplate done? What material?

That is the total cost including what I had already spent.

Hi Capt,
Been following this thread since a while. I think Rs.700 would be too less a budget for a torroid. It would eat into most of your contingency fund.

Thread is been quiet since few days:rolleyes:
Have u got your transformer sir???

Hi folks,

Anurag was right. The 400 VA cost is 3689/- and the 708 which I paid was for a 40VA tranny.

Because of his post, I went back & checked what I ordered and behold! I had ordered a 40VA tranny instead of 400. Typo error:o

I got a new PC at office which I've now discovered that it doesn't recognise keyboard strkes if done rapidly. Hence, only one '0' of the 400 were typed. I was in a hurry so didnt double check.:p

Since I feel that Rs. 3689/- is on the higher side, I'm on the lookout for a tranny. Someone suggested that I get it from the Class D guys but it would be too cumbersome, I'm looking for local source.

there are trannys and there are "audiophile grade" trannies. Considering how much they are supposed to "influence" the sound do you want to risk using any tranny?

What makes Miracle trannies audiophile grade anyways? I am curious ....

Regards

Just to mention that I had recently bought a 12V/3 Amp tranny for my creative 2.1 speakers as the original 110V adapter had conked off that I was using with 220-110V step-down convertor. I bought it from a lamington road shop where they themselves manufature and sell. It is heavier and bigger than the regular ones of same rating available in the market and it does "sound" good enough. And yes, it cost me Rs.360/-
Now I am not comparing my source and speakers but above is just an example that a good tranny need not necessarily be of audiophile grade super-expensive type. IMHO considering the overall budget of the project, spending more than 1.5K-2K on a tranny may not be worthwhile.

Don't know Rahul, some forum members have suggested Miracle so mailed them. Now I have to get back my money.

I fully agree with you Anurag. Our fellow forum member Mathew is scouting Richie street today. Considering that he is in this business, I'm hopeful of finding a tranny.:)

Bad-luck this time:sad:
I want to Maxine(Shas) to ask for the transformer, that bugger said me straight away that they are not doing torroidal kind... But about two weeks ago when i asked they said "Yes" and said it should cost less than 1k:eek:
Sick Fellows!!!!!
They are only interested in bulk orders:rolleyes:
Same attitude in most of the places...
Only Money talks...
Maybe we should get back to SV-Tronics
Two Years ago they customized a 20-Amps 22-0-22 torroidal @ 2100 rupees.. Quiet a big one it is:D

Just called them. Mr. Nanda Kumar was not available. Someone answered & asked me to mail the requirement. I'm doing it right away. Thank you very much for the link.:clapping:

I got a call from Miracle electronics yesterday saying that my Toroidal is ready. They said they are waiting for payment and expressed surprise that it didn't happen.:(

I don't know why did they act since I've not confirmed the order.:annoyed:

Now I'm stuck as I've already made the payment of 708 for the 40VA tranny.

Not to lose face, I paid up.

So, as predicted by Anyrag, my budget has already been overshot by 2K.

Lesson learnt, do not scout for toroidal in India, you end up paying more.

The full kit was avaialble for USD 189 from Class D Audio but it has now cost me USD 252.54.

Cap'n - was this the sequence of events for your toroid:
  • You ordered a toroid from Miracle, paid for it and were waiting for delivery
  • Anurag pointed out that you had budgeted too less for the toroid
  • You rechecked and found that you had ordered a 40VA toroid and paid Rs.708 for it instead of ordering a 400VA toroid which costs Rs.3689
  • Miracle calls you up to inform you that your toroid is ready and asks for payment again
  • You wonder why they executed the order because you had not confirmed the order
  • Now, here is the hazy part [for me] - You pay them again?
